(i havent made a thread since such a long time, so y not doing one ?)

Yeah so I play melee too, i dont play it too often, about 3-4 times a month, but when I do, i always play ssb64 just after.

Usually I should say ''oshi i just played ssbm im gonna suck at 64''
but instead im like uber on fire and my reflexes and mindgames are like multiplied by 45908369846

i guess thats prolly cuz melee is so fast
(btw i use falco)

Does that happen to anyone else?

Happens to me aswell. The superior speed of melee makes train your speed and finger skills for the little slower ssb64.

melee makes me worse as well, especially because I keep trying to do things like sidestep dodges and airdodges

They don't affect each other in the slightest for me.
This is probably because in my mind they are completely different games, because I play smash64 with keyboard (no N64).
The only exception is Pika, 64 makes my Melee Pika worse. =/

So far I havn't noticed much diffrence but then again I've only played melee for a few days, and I havnt played much ssb64 meanwhile. But it did feel kind of weird when I picked up the 64 controller after playing melee for 2 days.

Switching to 64 or brawl from any of the 3 games doesn't affect me since 64 is slower and simpler, and brawl sucks no matter when you play it. Switching to melee sometimes makes me a little slow at first, but after a few warmups, I'm back to my best.

In melee, I main Mr. Game & Watch, with alt Jigglypuff. BRAWL KILLED MY MELEE YOSHI!!!!!

Isn't it more like: melee killed your ssb64 yoshi?

Heck, even watching/playing Yoshi in melee made my ssb64 yoshi improve, and this char changed a lot in melee
brawl yoshi has no DJC

My 64 yoshi is fine, and is one of my best characters after the puff balls. I DJC fine and everything in 64.

Melee, I try to do a rising neutral air edgeguard off the ledge, and I instead just fall to my death. That, or I try to use eggs to recover. For some reason, only melee was affected, and not 64...

I find that after a long session of one game I get thrown off after the switch, but it's all nice and tidy again after one or two matches...they're relatively separated in my mind.

When I switch between the two games my immediate tech skill suffers a lot, and I have to play a bit to get it back...

but I have to say getting better at 64 (I play Falcon and he's pretty easy tech-skill wise) in the slower environment helped me get a lot better at Melee.

I'd say playing competitive melee makes you a lot better at ssb64. Not as much the other way around.

Connecting serious combos in melee is much harder due to the speed, so switching back to smash64 makes the combos seem easier to time (which they are) but I'll do some stupid mistakes with spacing and approaching mostly, because I find thats the biggest difference between the two

Both Fox and Falcon in 64 play relatively similar to their melee counterparts, so switching back and forth doesnt bother me all too much.

Woah at bumping this thread..

Hmm... I played melee for a long time. It helped my gaming skills as a whole.

Smash 64 has more depth than melee though and takes longer to master.

I think a lot of people, including me, would very much disagree with that.
Yeah I don't know about that but I will say that I dislike melee because tech skill is way too important. I don't care how deep a game is if getting to the deep parts requires ridiculous amounts of time spent practicing tech skill.

That's what makes it so deep though.... there are so many options to explore. 64 is a very linear game, with a lot of inescapable combos... Not that it isn't fun, but it's just a much simpler game than Melee overall.

And on the topic of this thread, yes Melee made me way better at 64. I learned how to space, approach, combo, and all that other stuff in Melee, and then heavily modified it as I made the switch to 64. I play Melee and 64 interchangeably now, and I have no problems switching between them frequently.

I don't know about that. The game wouldn't suffer if waveshining was easier or whatever. Also I find the mechanics of comboing in 64 to be very interesting given how much it tests your knowledge of the game's physics and the properties of your character's moves. On the other hand, there are some ridiculously easy combos too. I also like how recovering is difficult (though again maybe it goes overboard).

Regardless, I'm just saying what I dislike about melee. I saw a post recently that said that melee is 90% tech skill, which is pretty ridiculous.

Lol you mentioned an accursed game to these players, [troll] Melee is so haaaaaaaaard D: [sarcasm/]

on topic tho. They were opposite for me, when I play melee then go to 64 It helps me a bit. But vice versa makes me worse. weird i know

Melee is harder because its faster and requires more tech skill. That doesnt mean its better

Smash 64 has ONE player who no one, including slanty-eyed people can beat consistently.

Yes, this may be because we have a smaller pool of skilled/talented players but there are people like Boom, Alancitu, Prince, etc who try realllly hard to be good at this game and STILL don't have a chance to be #1

Melee was more back and forth and from the looks of it, a good two dozen players (APROXIMATLY) or so reached the top top top level, examples : Mew2king, Ken, Mango, You know who belongs here.

So if a bunch of people have "capped off" so to speak for melee's metagame, hasn't melee already reached it's ultimate metagame? admitedly I think melee can still be pushed a LITTLE further, but I think ssb64's competitive scene can be pushed further if only people spent more time on it. Very, VERY few competitive ssb64 players today are anywhere close to the top level.

So far for ssb64 only Isai has reached the ultimate level so in terms of depth and what it takes to win consistently no one really knows how far this game can go, but a comparison between a player like Superboom who not many of us have a hope in hell of beating in a tournament, and isai does support my point.

Melee does have more techniques and all that but ssb64 has different techniques, it's a VERY different game.

A very debatable topic indeed, I don't really want to argue or say that I'm right because it's pretty subjective, however ssb64 has a considerable ammount of depth. More than some of you give it credit for.

The only part of smash where 64 is deeper than melee is combo variation. Which is due to 64's ******** hitstun.

Indeed. The amazing combos one can pull off, you only need to watch some Isai or Prince combo videos (controlled environment combo vids) to see some truly original stuff being done.

However, Melee is without a doubt the deeper game. In each situation in Smash64, for every possibility of action the player has at their disposal they have twice as many options in Melee. There are so many mechanics and things that someone can do in any given position and so many subtleties that lend to such a versatile game.

That said, most people ignore the full depth of 64, even in the technical department. How often do you see people doing dashpivot edgehogs, for example? All the characters can do it, so you'd think more people would perfect it, but I only ever see Superboom doing it often. True it's hard to perfect, but if you've seen Boom's falcon instantly ledgehog and catch a now falling Mario off guard while saying "show me your moves" then you KNOW how useful it is :chuckle:

Sorry for sounding like a noob, but how do you do this? I tried it with puff, but I always end up using the teleport glitch off the stage, and I'm always facing away from the stage doing that. It may be a select few characters that can do this, but it would still be good to know how to do :p

You just run towards the stage and flick the control stick back at a certain point so you turn around and slide onto the edge. I can do it frequently (not perfectly), but I never seem to use it in matches. x.x
