Going back a bit in the discussion I know, but the backroom should not be publically viewable.

Why?

It's a matter of legitimacy.

The SBR (melee and brawl) derives it's power from legitimacy, the only reason it's functional is because normal players and TOs consider it a legitimate institution. Without that consent, nobody would follow them, so perception governs their power.

How does this tie into privacy? Simple, making the room publicly viewable would impact the perception of them negatively because would find a great deal more to comment on in the individual players. Most comments would be born of the commenting player's ignorance, but since they are given a venue to see the sbr discussion without a venue to put their impressions to rest, this leads to a gradual disillusionment with the SBR as an organization, aka a loss of legitimacy, therefore a loss of power.

Of course, duress is certainly important.

This is similar to why the supreme court discussions are private.

As far as scientific community, they have internal enforcement, they do not need legitimacy.

This is the reason why

This seems really idiotic and even insulting to me, you're saying that the backroom should remain private so that people think the SBR members are smarter than they really are? And hence people will listen to them less? That's ********, if people don't believe the SBR are that smart and choose not to follow them then that is their prerogative, I think it's a great idea to let Smashers choose for themselves whether or not the SBR is worth following.

You should re-read what he posted.

Basically what adumbrodeus said was that if people were to see the discussion in the back room they would comment on the discussion rather than the results. The SBR as a group is where the legitimacy comes from. If individuals come under attack for their discussion from outside the group, the SBR as a whole's legitimacy is lessened.
