So I see a lot of people at tournaments with their iPods on, their headphones in so It got me thinking, what are they listening to?
When you`re at a tournament, do you listen to music?
When you`re at home practicing against that Fox in training mode, do you got that laptop on?

Discuss!

I personally talk too much at tournament because I simply enjoy the conversation :p
When I do listen to music, its either Brother Ali - Self Taught, a lot of Bullet For my Valentine, Lamb of God, Suicide Silence or anything else to get my blood moving.

At home Im always listening, but its whatever my iTunes shuffles its *** to :p

I refer to the Japanese Digimon soundtrack often. Mostly the various evolution themes; Brave Heart, Break Up, With the Will, Beat Hit, and Target. Just gets me pumped haha. Other stuff that gets me riled up is techno from combo videos or match video. I like stuff like Blue Lightning by Disco Dan. Or Danger in Remlia. Stuff like that. Other VGmusic if it fits the mood is also really good (Tekken has a lot of good stuff!).

These aren't my favourite genres or anything, but I find songs like "Don't Forget Me" by RHCP or "The Pretender" by Foo Fighters (which I much prefer for general listening purposes) make me focus more on the lyrics and lose focus of the match. Alternatively, they may just take some of the competitiveness out of me if it's a love song or something similarly soft and endearing (like, I can't play seriously when something like "I will always love you!" is playing; I don't have that song myself, but similar songs can really take the wind out of me for some reason).

I'm not really sure why but the Digimon stuff, techno I associate with SSBM, and miscellaneous others get me in "I wanna **** mode!" Many a times I have hummed the tune to them during important tournament sets, and I have felt more confident or under control of my emotional state because of it.

As for whether I'm listening or humming or whatever, I find actually having the iPod on can be hit or miss. Sometimes a MU demands an audio cue for me to react, like the shine's noise. But in others, I feel I can function off purely visual stimuli (non-CG Sheik dittos, for instance, or Peach - for me, it's more the slower-paced characters I feel I can get away with it). So, for me, whether I'm humming, singing in my head, and actually listening depends on what's going on.

I never use headphones during gameplay here. Not in tournament or practice.

I would much rather focus on adapting to the tournament environment by being able to perform without the headphones. Plus, I'm sure the music that I would listen to would probably how I play during a tournament match, which could be bad. Like if the song is fast-paced, I might try inputting commands too fast, which causes technical errors.

During practice, I turn all music off. Even the in-game music gets turned off (it gets too repetitive as I tend to practice on one stage for at least 10 minutes). It helps me focus on what I need to do to get better.

No music for me.

I don't have a problem with music in the background, but I think listening to headphones when playing other people is sort of disrespectful. For one, it makes it much more difficult to take information from the opponent:

"WHAT?"
"I said I'm banning Fountain of Dreams."
"WHAT?"

For two, it suggests or implies that you are more fixated on whatever it is you're doing than acknowledging your opponent. While some may find that commendable, I think it lacks the show of sportsmanship you should have in a competitive environment.

I actually have tried to put on some headphones while I play in tournaments to see if they could help concentrate a lot more, but actually while Im playing I get more hooked up with the music from the game than of my mp3 player, so I totally miss my mp3 all the time, so far the tournaments Ive gone to Ive never seen anyone using headphones to listen to music.

I played with a guy for the first time who took out his phone and just started blaring Evanescence over the game music. It was the most ear-debilitating set I've ever played in my life.

Just practicing by myself I'll have my headphones on. Instrumental **** is good. When me and my friends smash we'll have some music playing a lot of times, but I would never wear my headphones in tournament. I don't think it's that complicated to switch between environments or anything.

I actually started to to listen to my music during tourney sets to help me calm down. Which surprisingly works for me.

And I listen to techno/trance while I play.

When training I always listen to music. Whatever is playing on my comp at the time.

When playing actual matches, I would never. Removing communication takes some of the fun out of it. Plus the Melee music is pretty good, even after hearing it a million times over.

I saw this movie "Warrior," where the trainer played Beethoven to help calm his fighters during training. I just assumed it was a bunch of bull ****, but it might be worth trying.

Certain types of music, I'm sure, are better than others. I would rather hear Opus 125: Symphony No. 9 in D minor than "**** the Police" when playing in a stressful environment.

However, I have given thought to singing rap verses against my opponent while camping them, just for lulz. "I'm like a head trip to listen to, cause I'm only givin' you things you joke about with your friends inside your livin' room."

LOL

I think its sorta a perspective kinda thing. Depends what you need in a set I suppose.

If you get nervous easy, I think a music you can calmly listen to helps. If you play better hyped, iunno maybe something like rap might work.

I usually got some Justin Beiber or Rebecca Black going. Really helps me get in the flow of the game.

In all seriousness, no I don't listen to music. To be quite honest, I've gotten so used to the game music my brain barely even registers it, but it's weird if its off or if its replaced by something.

other times i go the whole time and it's fine

when i do listen to music, or when i have, i'm really liking korn - here to stay just blasting in my ears

Just saying, for those of you who say playing music is disrespectful, its not really... people can still talk and interact and even hear while listening to music... Provided their not blasting it obviously...

I don't really listen to music, at least with headphones, if I'm just at a fest or something but I do while in tourney matches.

I'd usually listen to Nujabes, Explosions In The Sky, Incubus, stuff like that.

I'm almost always listening to music and practising/smashfests are no exception. I don't when I'm playing tournaments, however. No real reason other than it seems inconvenient to me.

When I'm actually playing ppl I only have the ingame music and sound. Can't stand playing with no/low volume.

I listen to hip hop mostly so when I practice sometimes I have some aggressive stuff like immortal technique, wu tang, or nas playing in the background

this post sums up my opinion of this

not nearly as disrespectful as your opponent talking to the crowd and shouting things while playing you tho. The player will go unnamed, but we worked it out lol

I talk to the crowd all the time. I think it's a good thing, as it encourages the crowd to interact. I avoid being disrespectful, and usually just respond to things they say or tell jokes while I'm playing.

No one has explicitly told me it feels disrespectful yet. I suppose I should ask.

To be honest, not too many things bother me when I'm playing. I'm usually dead silent. When I do talk or make gestures it means I'm frustrated and probably in full meltdown mode lol.

Occasionally in tournament I would be playing an opponent that talks to himself, or occasionally to me (e.g. "oops", "nice tech read", "dang, phantom") and I would just ignore them. Not out of slight, of course, I'm just zoned in. I once played someone who tried having a conversation with me during the match (weird, right?) and I completely ignored them while I played. I worked it out after the match with him of course, I wasn't trying to be rude I was just playing the game. I talk and comment on the game a lot when I'm playing friendlies, but when **** gets serious kevo is in all lockdown mode.

well it depends. I've also bantered with the crowd before inbetween matches and stuff (with people demanding that i play mewtwo because i ''main'' him, which i don't lol) and the last time i played KevinM we were dead serious and quiet playing marth vs fox, but all we did was banter and joke the second match, which was marth vs falcon. I know KevinM fairly well as far as tournies go tho and most of the other players i know usually get a ''good read'' or ''nice tech\combo'' from me and vice versa.

Buuut i have played a few people who i didn't know who literally screamed ending a combo and spent more time talking to the person next to them than paying attention to the match. That's what i meant by disrespectful. I don't care if you're a lot better than someone, you should be giving them your full attention in a tourny match, esp if it's your first time playing them.

Sorry if this reads sorta like a double standard lol -_-

Nah, I understand. You want to avoid insulting your opponent. For me, I'm capable of multi-tasking (concentrating on smash and having a conversation), and it helps me to relax. I usually engage the audience (for example, a Fox main once yelled at me to try and dair with Marth and I yelled at him "dude you ****ing suck with Marth shut up!" Naturally, the audience chuckled). So I suppose your mileage may vary as to whether what I do is insulting.
