It implies they're not included, but it's a long way from a confirmation that they're out. Although I don't think anyone suggested that, it was obvious a flame war would start from this.

There is NOTHING in common between Ike and Marth in Brawl, and Marth is not only the first Fire Emblem main character, but one of the few to be featured in more than one game.
That's a little bit of a lie, seeing as they have the same Down + B.. but besides that they are pretty much completely different, if you don't count them using a sword for everything.

well if this is true... it looks like melee isn't any where near done lol
interested ever so much... i guess one reason for such would be remaining true to the series while making a character innovative[[we all make it sound easy though huh??]]

on top of that Final Smashes--probably easy to make, and think up, and maybe even code, but how would we know... [[of course they are, look at all the fighting games before this :SHINKUU HADOU-KEN!! SHIN-SHORYUKEN!!]]
----------------------------
yes does this mean i am officially and SECRETLY in full on Eliwood-Sigurd Support mode!!
yeah-p, best kept secret ever

What is screwed up about Ness? I posted a translation, it's correct, everyone agrees on it, where is the screw up?
He's talking about the other translation they posted previously that stated that Ness appears in Brawl as a stage hazard on Onett.

As for the topic: no. They aren't confirmed as being excluded and absolutely nothing on Brawl Central shows that they are. This isn't denial, this is looking at the facts and observing that your topic title is horribly misleading.

Even the swords are different, actually. Ragnells more of a 2 handed sword, while Falchions 1 handed.

And as for the Down+B thing, I guess it's safe to assume all FE Male Lords have that as their Down+B?

Ok, well I do have a quetion mark and I said don't take it as something being set in stone. People just like to get angry at anything negative about their character. Marth was my main in melee, along with Sheik sometimes, but you don't see me slitting my wrists over it.

When did I steal a translation from Serebii? kashikomarima****a, Aeris, and .Yoshi are my translators. They translate the info for me and tell me before I post it. I haven't been to Serebii in forever.

So we shouldn't believe the magazine because it's not on the Dojo. That means we shouldn't have believed Snake's Down B was the C4 because it wasn't on the Dojo when it was printed in the magazine. Smae thing with Wario's Bite and other moves. Did we all doubt a Mario kart stage for 2 years before it was announced?

Where did you guys get the Ness translation from
"For Super Smash Brother's Brawl we gave Lucas a new moveset based off Ness from Mother 2. Ness isn't appearing in Brawl this time but players will still see him in the background off the Onett level on occasions"

It was on your site for a good hour or so. So you either 1) stole info from serebii.net (I know who posted that joke post on their forums.) 2) made up bull to get people to believe Ness was deconfirmed.

The magazine has said NOTHING but the fact that Marth and Roy were in Fire Emblem and Melee before Ike.

Note on the translation:

The controversial word is "predecessor", but this word neither confirms nor deconfirms their inclusion in Brawl. This word was used in the Japanese article maybe because they had Fire Emblem games BEFORE Ike appeared in his own game, or perhaps because Marth and Roy appeared in Melee BEFORE Ike did.

Anyone is free to interpret as he wants.

It's a neutral word in Japanese and English.
Another translation for that word (先人) is "ancestor", but that didn't fit this context.

If playable characters from Melee were not to be included in Brawl, they would be disconfirmed by official statements, not just hinted at in an article.
No one has anything to gain from simply suggesting that the characters will be gone. They would come right out and say it. Sakurai has no problem letting us down.
Let's just wait for an official statement or the game's Japanese release to make these determinations.

Read bold. Looks like Marth and Roy are axed. Also looks like Ness is gone if they're doing these articles on old Melee characters and included Ness. This is not somehting set in stone, but from the looks of it, it seems all three are about 99% gone. Darn, Marth was my alt main in Melee.

Where's the question mark, and where do you say not to take something as being set in stone? You clearly said they are 99% out. That's not a wavering question, that's a bold statement of fact. I also like how you ignore your own translator saying he doesn't interpret it as their being removed.

If this is true, Marth not returning will be a huge disappointment in the roster for Brawl. That is utter bull.

This is coming from someone who does not even main as Marth or use him often in Melee. Marth is, whether people like it or not, a face of the franchise. A memorable one at that; he's the one who began the Fire Emblem series, so he's the one that rightfully deserves to remain amongst the Nintendo All-Stars.

I'm not going to believe the word of some magazine that's cryptic until it's official word, official screenshots, inside scoop that pertains more to Brawl instead of merely looking back on Melee characters.

Marth not returning is a joke, in my opinion.

But if he doesn't come back, I'll live with it. It just wouldn't make sense though.

It could mean predecessor to FE. We can't take anything for certain about this. If it means for Smash, they're both gone(Chi and a few others have already explained this word, go look it up), if it means for FE, maybe both are gone, maybe neither are gone, maybe one or the other.

We still know nothing guys. This isn't evidence against them, and even if it's not, they still might be gone.

Predecessor is an ENGLISH word.

The JAPANESE word probably doesn't have the same nuances as ours.

Can we stop talking about the word the TRANSLATOR chose like it came out of Sakurai's mouth?

Why can't we just get scans of all the pages, and the full pages already? I mean.. for all we know there could be other pages like this for characters that aren't confirmed yet like Mr. Game and Watch or Ganondorf..

I honestly can't believe that Marth would be out.. he's too important to the series.
He's the first lord, practically the star of the series, had a remake of his game made, and now another one that will be out on the DS this year. If they put in Roy as advertisement.. why not keep Marth in for that very purpose as well? It just seems illogical.

Although I guess if Marth's out it gives Sigurd and Micaiah better chances..

And why didn't they mention Ike replacing Marth and Roy on Ike's Dojo profile like they did with Ness on Lucas's Dojo profile.

Chi keeps posting the ENGLISH definition of predecessor. The Japanese word doesn't necessarily hold the same connotation. And even then, predecessor means one that came before, but not necessarily one that is replaced.

What a complete lie. AN HOUR!? I talked to Aeris and Yoshi and they were feeding me translations. Aeris had a few errors, Yoshi corrected them, and everyone agreed he was right. The translations that Yoshi corrected were posted within minutes. Yoshi is a good translator, nothing is made up. Numerous people agree with him.

I gave you guys a translation, so take it as you may. I said in the first post that it's not a for sure thing, There's a question mark at the end of the heading. That's my opinion, so no need to bash it.

You say I said: "They are 99% out."

If you're going to be completly off about my wording, at least don't be caught with my original post quoted in your posts.

This topic should be closed...

Marth, Roy, and Ness are still not not deconfirmed.

You cannot base this of the dictionary definition or an ENGLISH word when the article was likely roughly translated from JAPANESE.

Wait till Nintendo or Sora puts out something more solid before you say they will not be in the game.

I'm sure a few people realized this but people still love to think they're out anyways. Just putting it out there.

The connotation of the word 先人(setsujin) in Japanese is more along the lines of "someone that came before you", ie. your predecessors, ancestors, etc.

Great post there.

I HATE Marth, I dont like to play with him, and I despise him as an oponent, but even so. He still needs to be in Brawl, he is the face of Fire Emblem, just like Pikachu is Pokemon's

Imagine Pikachu being replaced by Pachirisu..

Yeah...

Not happening.

Predecessor could mean all sorts of things.

Marth, and Roy were new FE characters to Melee, Ike is a new FE character to Brawl. Ike is thereby taking up the spot as the NEW FE character for the Smash series, thereby making Roy the successor for the NEW FE character slot, since Marth and Roy would be put down as veterans.

I expect Roy, and Ness to be cut, but Marth? Noooo

We might as well close this thread. The same thing is being argued over and over again, and there will not be an answer to any of your questions/statements for another week and a half, so stop. :)

I admit, I didn't see where you had said not set in stone, but you do say 99% gone. That's a pretty bold statement of fact, and is not completely off about your wording. The only one off about wording is you, when your own translator has now said, in this very topic at least three times now, that it doesn't necessarily mean "replaced".

That supports my argument.

"One that came before you" =/= "one that came before you that you replace"

The connotation of the English word "predecessor" can suggest replacement, but is this the case with the Japanese word?

I'm kind of on the fence about Ness being in Brawl.

覚えていますか? ネスのことを

"Do you remember? About Ness."
To me this kind of implies that yeah, he's gone.

スマブラシリーズに連続参戦している[MOTHER2]の主人公ネス

Word for word...
"Smash Brothers series in continuing fighter doing mother 2 main character Ness."
Now, using my Japanese skillz to decode this.....
"The Mother 2 protagonist who continues as a Super Smash Brothers series fighter, Ness."

連続 means consecutively/continuing (which I translated as continues) Consecutively, plus している (is presently a continuing fighter) instead of していた (WAS a continuing fighter, ie from SSB to SSBM) implies that he IS in Brawl.

Who knows.

Its sad to see that Marth and Roy are gone along with Ness. I never used them much but, it will be sad to see them gone. Hopefully, there will be other Fire Emblem reps than just Ike. I want to see Ephraim as the first lance user in a Smash Bros. game.

A-ha!

So, you could take "Can Ike surpass his two predecessors?"

and change it into: "Can Ike surpass these two that came before him?"

And then it looks entirley different.

See, now you can say that Ike needs to prove himself since he is "the new guy" and Marth and Roy are old vets.

First of all, your hate for Marth won't change anything.
Second, this is not confirmed 100% true, so don't get your hopes up.
Third, Black Knight's chances were never good. If they would remove the most popular Fire Emblem character from Brawl who has been the main character in 2 games as well as an anime and manga, I don't think they would put in a much less important character like Black Knight. Not as a PC anyway.
If anything, the most likely addition other than Marth is Sigurd.

I'm a translator too, and saying that he's a "continuing character" could just refer to the fact that he's been in the first two games. But who knows exactly?

Why can't somebody tell us who the other "Do you Remember" characters are?
If there's a Luigi one, then that'll prove that this doesn't mean anything;
Because Luigi's in Brawl, undisagreeably.

I wouldn't set anything in stone just yet. 2 weeks from now we'll know soon enough who's in and out. I believe Roy is out, but Marth and Ness could be in.

According to the post times on IGN (can't look at SWF, it's too slow) The new translation was put up less than SEVEN MINUTES after the original one was posted. That's far off from your "good hour".
