Well, I finally ordered it...

And it's not coming until at least next week....

I guess this is maybe a good sign, it's selling really well, but at the same time, if the supply issues turn newcomers off from getting the game..... could be a bad thing as well. Although maybe I just ordered from a bad retailer, not sure if other retailers have these issues or not.

So my brother was the one who ended up getting me Super Mario RPG for my birthday, and he'll be coming home Saturday after being away for a couple months doing theater work, so to pay him back, and as a welcome home gift, I wanted to get The Thousand Year Door for him.

But instead of a physical copy, I ended up getting a digital copy, but he also has his own Switch, and the digital copy would only show up on our family Switch.

So after I called a Nintendo representative, they said while they don't usually allow refunds for digital purchases, they'll make an exception in this case, and when my confirmation email for that comes in the next few days, I'll try again for a physical copy then.

So, lesson of the day: When you're trying to do something nice for a family member, don't go rushing into the process, if it's something you've never done before. Because this was the first time I tried directly purchasing from Nintendo's website.

Yeah, I almost made a similar mistake, when I checked a couple of days ago, the Nintendo website was only selling digital copies of the Paper Mario remake rather than physical and almost got digital instead. (Didn't notice the physical was greyed out at first).

Hey guys! Right now, I wish to talk about Geno's chances in Smash Bros.

Nah, just kidding!

But seriously, the game he was originally from, Super Mario RPG, had the additional title, "Legend of the Seven Stars" in the United States. I just want to say that the Seven Stars, or Star Pieces, were all part of one thing, that one thing being the Star Road, so since those Star Pieces were a part of something rather than being independent stars, I don't see how there is supposed to be a legend about them.

Maybe it would have been better if the additional title was "Legend of the Star Road" instead?

Alright, so when I woke up this morning, I found out that our TV wouldn't turn on, and that the Switch wouldn't charge in its dock, which was concerning, because after hooking them up the first time, they haven't been messed around with since.

I thought it may have been continued bad luck, from what happened yesterday, but it turns out the shared outlet they were plugged into just died, because after unplugging, and testing it with my phone charger, it wouldn't charge, but when I tested them all with a different outlet at the other side of the room, they all worked just fine.

My interpretation is that the "Legend of the Seven Stars" isn't the legend of the Star Road in general, but rather the actual plot of the game itself, if you look at it from the perspective of having the story retold to someone generations later, perhaps. Something like,
"This is the legend of how the Star Road was once shattered and split into Seven Stars".

We started with Star Pieces in SMRPG, Star Spirits in PM64, Crystal Stars in TTYD, and then Pure Hearts in SPM. (And some sticker and paint cr** in the SS games but I don't care about those).

Wonder what will be next (in a hopefully RPG styled game like the first two Paper Marios, not more art supply garbage like in latter games).

Paper Mario sold 115,649 copies. At a glance, this is bittersweet. It seems like with digital, it'll far surpass most other Paper Mario entries. But looking at what Mario RPG did with 301,334, I was expecting PM to get at least that, especially with being released on the Thursday (where Mario RPG was on the Friday). I felt there was a bit more hype behind PM. I'm at a spot where I don't know how to feel. I've been playing it, and it holds up extremely well. The updates have been very good in my opinion.

I guess it'll be interesting to see where things go from here with Mario RPG's in general. No doubt Mario RPG cleared the first week. Hopefully Paper Mario sales stablizes over the next few weeks. But I won't lie, it's kind of nice to see just how strong Mario RPG was out the gate. I hope that Nintendo sees that.

I believe they're referring to opening weak Japanese sales (from Famitsu), which is certainly important but given the game's strong numbers in Europe and likely decent sales in the US, I'd say TTYD remake's eventual place will be pretty good.

Really it makes sense that the modern Mario RPG did better than Paper Mario 2 in Japan opening week given how beloved the SNES (and the 1996 release) was and how comparatively less popular that the GC (and the 2004 title) was. And of course, it's the inverse with Europe as Seven Stars never came out there so it had less of a legacy in that region while Thousand Year Door was, hence a greater hunger for the remake now.

You are correct, that was what I was referring to. I'm really intrigued how it all pans out. My local Gamestop told me that they had more pre-orders for TTYD. At the end of the day, I hope it does well. I'm almost done the remake and it's fantastic. I had the original back when it came out. I think the majority of the changes are all positive, and if I didn't know that it was 30 fps, I wouldn't have noticed.

Are there opening numbers for week one in Europe and/or NA? I didn't think any other country released data like that weekly. I thought it was only in Japan (which is why I didn't specify in my initial post)

Quoting from the Next Smash thread:
I want a better Paper Mario stage, to be honest. And if the Paper Mario series version of Mario himself can't be playable for whatever reason, an idea I just had was having some sort of 'Paper Partners' group Assist Trophy, where you'd randomly summon one of the PM64/TTYD partners to fight with you for a few seconds.

But at the very least I want more music, which I feel like is the most likely addition.

I've not been here for a while, but just curious and post a question here:

I know many members here adore the original SMRPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, cannot say myself is the biggest fan of it: . But I feel like after fans begging for the remake of SMRPG for decades, I'm curious, are you bothered to know Geno and Mallow aren't gonna return in new games (Brothership, Jamboree etc)?

Yes, Nintendo's modern mandate is not trying to associate stories and characters from different Mario RPGs, so it's not very surprising to know they're not trying to push the SMRPG characters and stories for further use in later projects. (To be fair, there is also TTYD remake and I absolutely love its cast.)

But at this day NIntendo sure have noticed the fan community , I think it's kinda dissapointing to see them refuse to offer Geno, Mallow and Goombella more chances. How's you guys' feel?

SMRPG characters not being used is not something I would be bothered by, simply because that's been the norm I've gotten use to. I would be elated if they did appear more but I'm not holding my breath.

Nah, similar to what Platinum said, I'm used to Geno and Mallow not being in those games. And Geno's cameo in Mario and Luigi is still on the "Switch online app" release of superstar saga.

That said.... for Paper Mario games and Mario and Luigi games, I am disappointed without callbacks to the previous games in the respective series.

I want Fawful cameos like partners in time had again. I realize he was the big bad of Bowser's inside story, but come on, bring him back.

I finished the Paper Mario Remake.

I think it's safe to say that it holds the test of time, it's still not only one of my favorite Mario games, but favorite video games in general of all time.
I legit got emotional during the ending, seeing everyone you've met throughout your journey cheering you on and telling you not to give up, and then saying goodbye to all your partners and them telling you not to forget them. Not just for the writing but the nostalgia as well.

My true wish for gaming is to see another Paper Mario game in this style again, a brand new one. Now that I know what they are capable of, creating a remake with so many positive changes and bringing the GCN game to the modern age, I want to see a true sequel, with the battle system of 64/TTYD and the creativity of the first three games. I truly hope that come the next Nintendo system, we can see a true return to form for this series, the same way Mario and Luigi got a new game with the same battle system.

Just give me a "Paper Luigi And the Milennium Compass."

I realize it's "Marvelous Compass" in the game... but make it parallel the thousand year door.

The Chestnut King kidnaps Princess Eclair as Luigi discovers that each compass piece points to the next and one of them is in princess Eclair's tiara, so to rescue her, he needs to assemble the compass until he is pointed to her. He leaves Rogueport for Rumblebump Volcano by boat (Luigi will have a regular boat because he seems to sail out of Rogueport for each place). He meets Blooey the Blooper, the White Torpedo... who is a jerk. Who basically is planning to betray Luigi at the first opportunity but Luigi is too naïve to realize it. At the end of the first boss fight, in an attempt to backstab Luigi over the compass piece in the moving giant statue boss, Blooey winds up in lava and becomes tan for the rest of the game. He stays with Luigi... thirsty for revenge.

The Compass piece leads Luigi and Blooey to Plumpbelly village the strudel continent where they see a town ruled by a giant snake named Hizza. Hizza has demanded the mayor's daughter as a sacrifice. Despite the two not looking that similar, Blooey insists that she's practically Luigi's twin, and Luigi in a dress is offered as a sacrifice by the mayor, Blooey... and a shy red bob-omb named Jerry who's not really enthused at the deceit. Jerry joins as a companion and is,... horrified by Luigi, who in the fight with Hizza was able to claim a compass piece... but also destroyed most of the town. Luigi blames the stiletto heels he had to wear as part of the mayor's daughter costume. Jerry swears to stay with Luigi to make sure his stiletto clad destruction befalls no one else without warning.

Then Luigi sails from Rogueport to Circuit Break Island, where they hold kart races daily and meets Torque, a green spiny with a wrench top instead of a spike. Luigi realizes he needs a kart to win the next compass piece, begs Torque for his.... and of course totals it in the boss fight at the end of the kart race. Torque joins the party until Luigi can cough up 5000 coins in repair costs.

....and go on from there. Just use the outline Luigi gave us in Thousand Year Door.

If you pay Torque off early, he sticks around, but now has dialogue where he doesn't insult Luigi.

Each partner basically has a sidequest where you can convince them they actually like Luigi and this will change their dialogue for the rest of the game.

But the outline for the game was completely given to us.

Just finished the mario rpg remake and it was even better than I expected. The new additions make the game feel fresh. The cutscenes were awesome, the triple meter made battles easier but a little more unique, the monster list was super fun to fill out, the new switch mechanic made all the party members feel more equally useful, the post game bosses were genuinely difficult and 3d culex is one of the coolest mario bosses ever. Overall it's safe to say the remake absolutely outshines the og and I really hope we eventually get the long awaited sequel someday.

After a month or so of waiting for my brother to finish his playthrough, I've finally gotten the chance to play through the TTYD remake.

Currently in the Glitz Pit, and I'm a little surprised with how good my luck has been so far. Not only was I able to successfully cheat the Lottery, and relatively quickly for it's exclusive badges, but I've also succeeded in more Bingoes and Superguards than I would have thought possible.

I'm playing through Thousand Year Door again on Switch, first time for this version. What a gem. Missed playing this. It was my first Paper Mario, only played this and Super Paper Mario, which I also enjoyed. I share the distress of the fanbase moving on from the great concept of Paper Mario onwards Super Paper Mario.... It never should've happened.
