B-rated? He and Mario are the only two video game characters to be more widely known than Mickey Mouse. :p

I think the point he was trying to make was that sonic is dying at this point. His games are neither popular (sales wise) or considered good by many gamers.

Also, during a survey, more people recognized Pac-Man then Mario :p

Sonic Unleashed sold an very impressive two million copies, most of which are on the Wii (Which has over one million). I also enjoyed the game a lot on the Wii, which many people consider the inferior version, but I disagree.

It was a close win though (1 percent)

With sonic, some games do ok-well but quite a few end up doing bad.

This is one of the instances where I wonder if it sold well because it caught the eyes of the newer generation of video game players (new gamers, kids).

Though that did make me want to know how well Sonic Unleashed did! So I checked IGN, which might not be the BEST place for games but I still decided to check it out:

http://wii.ign.com/objects/142/14242720.html - WII
http://xbox360.ign.com/objects/142/14242719.html - PS3/Xbox

The PS3/Xbox versions got the same score, and it's pretty bad. (I don't know what it was like on the WII, I mostly play old-school sonic) I do think however it's a bold move for Nintendo to take Sonic back to 2D. I mean, look at Megaman. From what I saw the 3D games were pretty bad...go play Megaman 64. But then 9 came out and did very well.

Either way back to the main point, Sonic in a Mario game is...an interesting idea. I don't think he should be incorporated in a "Mario only" game. Maybe the racing and party games are okay, but Mario is doing FINE as a series by itself.

EDITS: Adding the interview, new levels announced for SMG2:

WHOA. Light Yoshi looks really cool!

I believe that is the same rock they used in SMG1. The red core was just replaced with mario's head.

The gameplay trailer looks awesome. The Rock Mario was a good idea and they seem to be working on some awesome level design. I also like the new map better than when I first read "2-D" map. I wasn't sure how it would work, but it seems like they have their act together with the map screen.

LOL. Golem Mario.

But really, if you look at the video, I really LOVE the design of his clothing when you get the Rock Mushroom. His hat and shirt actually look rocky. Well, what am I talking about? Mario games usually have great concept artwork, and the outfits he wears are usually very well polished.

It's hard for Nintendo to screw up a game if it is a main game in a series; be it graphics or gameplay. They seem to be adding a ton from an already superb original and, well, I can't wait to get my hands on it

Since I'm probably getting a job late this month or in May, this will be my first purchase with my own money (Monster Hunter Tri comes out on my birthday).

Sonic is geared towards childern, plus he's one of the most recognizable characters in the game industry, so no wonder why it did so well, especially on the Wii.

And people say that the HD versions are superior.

Just fixed a typo there. BTW, I would say the Wii version is better. I put over fifty hours in the game and I can say that it's well worth a buy if you're a fan of Sonic. Just be prepared for most of the stage being Werehog's. But it's getting off-topic, so it's best to end the discussion here.

Too much paranoia in the video game world right now. People are scared for Zelda Wii's shift in mechanics and formula, now people are scared for the continuity of Mario? They can do virtually anything they want. Who would have thought that Mario would become a side-scroller paper rpg? No one. Who would have thought that a whole Mario game would be based around tropics? No one. They will keep making Mario games.

Space is the final frontier? Not if Mario hasn't visited every part of his own globe! I mean we haven't even had a 3-D platforming game in the Mushroom Kingdom yet. lol (Peach's Castle doesn't count, it was just a hub)

Why do I have a hard time believing that? Especially when you say your brother's uncle?

Could you at least explain the "brother's uncle" thing? that's what's kind of barring me from believing it.

So is your brother a half-brother then? Because I'm otherwise not sure why you just don't reply to him simply as your father's step-brother.

I don't mind Mario being paper or rpg! Also, tropics I don't mind, if there is some sort of variety (there was). Although I just think I'd rather have some things seperate. It would be just as bad to see Mario in a zelda game. Well I mean, not a cameo (Oot) but just as a full-fledged character. You are right, since Mario games are are a bit more, less serious then zelda, it would be easier to fit sonic in... But I wouldn't want sonic too big a part in a mario game. But as Yink said, racing games and mini mario games are fine. But the main plot games are the ones I would rather just see MARIO. PIPES. TOADS. MUSHROOMS. LOOPS. WHAT IS THIS?!

Ah, but if sonic being put into a mario game would make it sell more, there is virtually nothing we can do. We do live in a capitalistic country.

I'm frightened to think this might be the last Mario game. I mean, where will the franchise go from here? We've hit Mario Space! There's not much beyond outer space, I dont think.
Haha right. Look at the direction Power Rangers went. In space, then lost in space, then in a lost galaxy, and then in a jungle, lol wut.

But you know, they could simply go back to mushroom kingdom, I'd like that you know. Why is mario in space in the first place? Going to an island seems, natural. But cmon space? SPACE? Go back to mushroom kingdom! Or some sort of kingdom down on the ground. I'm sqeamish.

You completely misunderstood me. That post of mine had nothing to do with Sonic, it was in response to Jabberwocky's fear of Mario going to space, then having no where else to go. I used the paper and tropic examples of what Nintendo is willing to do to Mario to keep it fresh. After Super Mario 64, everyone expected a Super Mario 64-2, not an adventure based on a tropical island using a completely new water-based mechanic. Mario Galaxy did the same and essentially took Mario out of the tropics and into space, nicely transitioning it with some tropic stages that were reminiscent of Delfino.

My point is that Nintendo does not see space as the final frontier. Look what they allowed to happen to Star Fox: from a space rail-shooter to an on-foot Zelda-esque adventure on a Dinosaur planet. That's guts right there and I admire that in Nintendo. When all of their franchises become predictive, I'll stop buying Nintendo products.

 except I wasn't referring to Star Fox Assault, rather Star Fox Adventures.

Hmm...Mario has his own forum now? Awesomness...

It should have been called "Mushroom Kingdom" though,

Like the pokemon one is called "PokeCenter"

Cloud Mario, some new details on the co-op mode, Cloud Mario, Galaxy's version of the Super Guide that featured in NSMBWii, Cloud Mario, a Super Mario Sunshine themed level, Cloud Mario, remix of the Ghost House Theme from Super Mario World, no Ice Flower powerup, and finally, Cloud Mario are all explained in the links above.

As to why I didn't post this in the SMG2 thread, I have no idea.

Wow. I'm doubly excited for the game now. As said in that article, this is really shaping up to be a true Super Mario Galaxy 2, not Super Mario Galaxy 1.5.

For some reason I keep thinking of Sonic the Hedgehog when I look at this picture.

Really? I guess I can see that. (I haven't played many of the 3d sonic games though, but it does look like one)

It really reminds me of the slide levels in Super Mario 64 more than anything. I hope there's an option to slide on your stomach.
