Kirin that Lucario match was awesome. Good DI, Cape Glide follow ups, and you landing the pivot grabs was like O_o.

Didn't watch the Ike one yet.

I think you need to Up-smash more Kirin (especially vs Ike), but srsly, good games.

I disagree. You don't need to be fast to be good, you only need to be smart.

From the videos I watched, you have a solid foundation, however there is a ton of room for improvement.

First of all, your approach game is non-existant. You have no reliable means of getting inside your opponent's range, and thus you force yourself into a game of dancing and baiting, waiting to land the Fsmash. That's a fine strategy in itself, but it appears that it's all you can do! Any opponent who will analyze your Fsmash range, timing, and setup will tear you apart. You need to find a way to get inside your opponent.

Solid examples of this occuring are the matches vs HRNut. As soon as he plays 'walking Snake', you have no idea what to do and simply jump and throw out a couple bairs in hopes that he will get caught. Get inside more! Rack up that damage and get him off the ground!

Here are a couple ideas: you don't approach with fireballs enough, you only use them to stall the opponent. Try jumping forward while tossing a fireball, and then run after it. Fireball flanking is an excellent method of getting into your opponent, and if timed right will give you a free shot at their shield, where you can try to read the reaction. You should also try more SH cape. Done on Snake's shield, you can then make it into a guessing game where he has to try and figure out if you'll land in front or behind him, or if you'll attack directly. Be careful, as his jab is a fantastic anti-air and he may try to snipe you if he starts getting wise. I actually came up with that cape stuff recently (no, I didn't 'invent' it, I just found it useful), so if you decide to try it out please let me know how it works, there may be some flaws I have to watch out for.

I know how profitable rolling inside the opponent can be, but try to break that habit. You get punished too much for your own good. If you're pushed to the edge, DO NOT fall for that trap, they are just waiting for that roll! Better to claw your way back in inch by inch.

Lastly, try to have a less predictable close-range game. Every time I see someone get inside your range, it's sidestep->smash. You need to read them better, otherwise your opponent will sidestep your smash and you'll get merked.

I hope these tips help a bit, good luck!

Yeah, I definitely see what you're saying. My biggest problem is rolling behind the opponent when they come back from losing a stock. All of my friends that I play consistently punish that. They just come back, walk up to me, and turn around. It's actually a really hard habit for me to break lol. However, I have to break out of it, or I will be eating Snake's free up tilt every time. I'll work on my approach game also. I'll have to try that cape on Snake's shield tidbit. Seems like it could work. Those matches with HRNut, I was nervous as hell cause he's a top 10 player here in FL. I'll try to focus more, be less predictable, and read my opponents better. Thanks for the tips.

I got a surprise present for you guys! Here are a ****ton of friendlies against one of our resident Snake players, Dom. He's very solid with explosives and tilts, and tough to penetrate...well, I guess he's your run of the mill nightmare Snake ;). He's got great timing sense though. The matches are all very fast paced and energetic, a must watch!

ThatGuy (Mario) vs. Dom (Snake) 1&2
ThatGuy (Mario) vs. Dom (Snake) 3&4
ThatGuy (Mario) vs. Dom (Snake) 4&5

Spoiler for results (read this after watching):
I don't win any of them =(. I played Dom the week after and found that doing more cape mixups when approaching him while he was shielding gave me more flexibility on where I could land, thus presenting me opportunities to get inside his range more. Still can't consistently beat the guy though, haha.

Any feedback will be very much appreciated!

When on the ledge ThatGuy, you should try that technique that Kirin does in a few of his vids. Drop the ledge a little, cape the other way, then reverse fireball back onstage. Seems to work well for him when pressured on the ledge. Especially good against Snake since he can eat the Bair at low% and just Utilt after the hitstun. He did that a couple times to you in those vids.

BTW, are you Mario only?

Yeah. I used Wolf in teams for a couple tournaments and did well, but my Wolf is a rust bucket at the moment. There are a couple other videos that were uploaded today with my Mario, both teams and Singles. I'll post them when I'm less lazy.

Erm...wouldn't he get tons of time to shield (or even eat) the fireball and Utilt me then? There is no way I can make an approach out of that. You'll have to explain that a bit further for me.

Yeah, I guess that's also a possibility. I dunno, maybe you could throw the fireball and regrab the ledge, or maybe you can get in before the fireball stun is over...

I've never tried it. My Wii's bricked. It looked like an amazing mix up though from the ledge though. Figured I'd mention it before Kirin got the chance incase you didn't know/it could help.

Yeah you can get a few things in if the fireball hits. I usually just grab, dsmash, or jab combo out of it the fireball hits, grab works if they shield it to and going back the ledge after the fireball is always an option. If you see them trying to stage spike you out of it you can time the cape well enough that you hit them with it and send them out a bit so you can recover safely too.

I'm suprised Xyro posted the match-up 60-40 in our favour. I mean I find it's a really close match. Based on videos/experience I find the biggest problem is getting through her wall of missles, and z-air. Once you do you can be quickly tossed out by up B. Resetting the situation forcing us to approach. However we can K.O her quickly then she can K.O us which leads it to being even.

Kanzaki imo you did really good that match, not much else you could improve on against Samus (I think, unless someone has better knowledge/experience then me) you had a lot of trouble getting inside of her range, but that's expected from Samus =P.

YHESZ! New match vids of me getting *****!

ThatGuy (Mario) vs. Doc (DDD) 1&2 | Battlefield

Fun fun times.

My thoughts:
I got grabbed a lot (duh), and some of those CG's really burned when he got me for ~30%. During the match I thought he had impeccable grab timing; and you'll definately see him get some crazy turnaround grabs I didn't think he would have time to pull off. I didn't chip him enough. My shieldstabs didn't work as much as I intended them to, and I have no idea whether it was dumb luck, poor precision, or he did some nutty shield tilting, but I'm usually very aggressive on the DDD matchup and usually I get free Dair shieldstabs into aerial followups, so this was an unfortunate surprise for me.

I went SSJ mode on him near the end, but too little too late :p

Nice Mario, Guy. Just wondering though, when Dedede was cancelling his up b to get to the edge, why didn't you FLUDD him? Does it not work? I only tried it once, but I got it to work that time.

ThatGuy you played really well, but some parts had me . For starters I don't know if you noticed this but that Dedede liked playing by the edge, he did that because he'd know that you'd approach him, and well hey one grab near the edge is like 30% free damage for him. You should've played like you played the IC's match. Spam Fireballs and DJ maneuver your way around the platforms. He also liked cancelling up B a lot, you had opportunities to gimp him, but you just thought another move could be better. You did pretty well, though. Good job :).

I admit that my edgeguarding was pretty embarrassing in hindsight. I didn't do a good job on it at all.

Here's another set I played from that tournament:

ThatGuy (Mario) vs. Ambrose (IC's) 1 | Battlefield

ThatGuy (Mario) vs. Ambrose (IC's) 2 | Battlefield

I learned a bit about the IC matchup at least, hopefully that'll come in handy later. I was able to maul another IC later on in the tournament haha.
