Maintaining Tech Skill

How can I maintain my tech skill in tournament matches, and even friendlies? I practice a lot at home and can pretty much do anything I want to on command. But when I participate in matches against other players, I seem to lose a lot of my true capability. I guess it's because i'm nervous, or I can't do what I want to without thinking about it during a match. I dunno what's wrong, but I want to be able to do everything I can do by myself in friendlies and tournaments.

Reverse Thunders', perfect waveshines (Perfect reverse waveshines as well), everything. Also waveshine dances (Because i'm streaky, apparently.) So anyways, what can I do in order to have my tech skill transition into real matches?

I sometimes have problems like that to,you nothing to shame.what I do is pretend that the actual match is me in training mode and the cp is an actual human attacking.

I'm having the exact same problems myself. I would be pretty good when I'm playing alone, but when I go up against someone, I just screw up. I mean, I don't even have many decent friends to play with nor do I have the time. My skills are deteriorating thanks to school and the fact that my only opponent hardly ever plays me.

Man, I brought my Gamecube to St. Petersburg, FL for a marching band competition (BOA) last Friday. Sure, I pwned some of the matches (still not very well), but others were pretty lame (like suicides and crappy tech skill). The guys I played were not very good - at all. We also had to play 4-way free-for-all.

These are the reasons why I think I don't play at full potential:
1. I don't have enough experience playing in an environment other than training mode.
2. I don't have enough experience executing these moves in a heated battle.
3. There are pretty much no good opponents.
4. I get nervous (kinda ties in with #1).

Maybe you've encountered some of the same experiences and problems? What I think we should do is just to fight more in matches and make a harder attempt at executing these moves - at least when someone dies. That way, it sorta prepares you to be able to do it in a more tense position (environment). It kinda helps me.

It's a nervousness, and a speed thing. Computers are slow. Always. And they are always predictable, making them slower. When playing in real life, you have to move really fast, and make very quick judgment calls on certain moves, and be able to preform the moves at any given moment, not when you plan it. The key is to practice, in friendlies mostly at first. You just need to keep up, and incorporate it into your play, and eventually it becomes habbit to do certain things.

You aren't use to doing moves under the pressure of someone trying to control the match. Practice until it really is second nature and you don't think about it, you just do it.

I'll give you a better answer than before.
If you need to work on something, all you need to do really to get better at that something is to work on it. If it's that you're getting nervous, then go to more tourneys so you don't get nervous, or find another way to work on that. If it's just because you make errors, work on those more. Even if you get a bit nervous, and mess somethings up, get so technical that you won't mess those up even when nervous.

Practice more.
Thanks for the advice everyone. I guess i'll just do what this man said and practice more, as well as trying to keep my cool in matches.

SW: What kind of techy moves can I practice? I've recently been practicing reverse thunders but now I just need something to get excited about.

But in all honesty, the best thing for me to do probably is to just keep playing in matches and focusing on improving my tech skill during those matches. Iono.

EDIT:

Play until you're reaction time is perfect. Or just only do moves that have an alternative if you mess up so you don't get punished.

I'm in Collins Hill. We got 3rd in our captions (or whatever it was called) and 5th overall. I'm going to the BOA Atlanta Super Regionals (The Georgia Dome) 10/27/07. Are you going there? It would be pretty cool if I could play you.

I wrote about BOA wondering if anyone on Smashboards went there. Turns out there were some who went. That is so awesome.

all it is is experience. i was the same way, and still get that way sometimes.

your hands might get sweaty when your nervous, or when you go up against someone mad fast or way better than you, you might actually slow down instead of speed up, lol

just play better people more often, attend more tournaments, and keep working. eventually it'll become second nature
