I mean sorry not sorry Ridley thread. You guys are cool, and I really would like to see Ridley. You can even go to the very first page to see for yourselves. He used to be in my sig of wanted characters, but now it's just Sex Bob-Omb.
I was just here for some fun, which quickly turned not fun. ;D
As much as I'd love to pretend that there's even a pot to begin with that can be stirred, I second the notion that no one actually cares.
Infractions for social-esque spam aside, nobody here is getting up in arms over what may or may not happen. So trying to provoke said reactions by crossposting (again, no one cares if it is or isn't a "raid") or just being in this thread for the inevitable conclusion of "I was right while you were all wrong" and nothing else won't be nearly as gratifying this time around when so many have already tempered their expectations.
Same goes for every other thread/character fanbase/whatever that gets picked on for similar reasons. Opinions are fine, but if they're conveyed in any tactless/obvious-bait kind of manner, they'll be reprimanded as such. Let people enjoy fantasizing about their fictitious purple dinosaurs as they please. Sakurai forbid we end up in the opposite situation this time around.
Anyway, here's a topic change. Assuming Ridley does get added with his Samus Returns style, would you like him to get alts based off his previous appearances? If so, which ones would you want?
Personally, I'm crossing my fingers for the Super Metroid look.
If you think about it, adding this would make a lot of sense. After all, Samus Returns Ridley does end up changing into what I assume is his Super Metroid look during the boss fight.

These are just 8 of the many that I've done (original render is by Smashified). There are plenty more that I can post, if anyone's interested. I'd have to compile them all together though, as I don't think people (mods especially) would be happy to have to scroll down a long page XD

Now, in case Ridley wasn't a playable character, I think the other best thing for him would be being a main antagonist in a story mode.
Like Gandondorf and Bowser were in Brawl, being commanded by Master hand (that was controlled by Tabuu), having a role in the story more than just a random boss and being destroyed by Samus in a final fight before going for the real main villain of the story mode.
That of course, assuming there would be a story mode at all.
Samus returns makes his wings smaller and his neck less weird, it makes him really scalable, you could easily make a model of this design bigger than Samus but small enough to play.
Now, there is actually a good reason of why they could totally add Ridley in Smash, and that is to generate hype for Metroid prime 4, this didn't happen with the last 2 smash games because there was no new Metroid games to hype, but this time is different, they would want people to get excited for Metroid by adding new characters into Smash, and what's better than the space purple dragon?
I think that is the best reason to believe Ridley could still have a chance.

I'm not saying Kraid is not gonna be in prime 4, in fact I hope he is too, I'm saying that they would want to generate hype for it, with more metroid representation in the new smash, and Ridley is the second most important character in Metroid.
More seriously, at this point I'm feeling starved for any news regarding MP4, and Ridley being the bigger name at this point is more sure to fuel the fire. Though Kraid can work a secondary function... you wanna stage hazard? Get back there behind the Brinstar platform again, fatty!
Now Kraid is someone that I'd say is 'too big'. Ridley's gimmick was never that he was big. He is big, of course, he is a monster boss, but Kraid's entire deal since Super is that he is two-screens high. I never really understood how the 'too big' thing really got stuck on Ridley. If something, too lanky is much more fitting, even if I think that is still very managable.
Anyways
I am happy to be back in the Ridley support, and I honestly do think he has a good chance to finally appear. I am positive that Ridley got more votes in the ballot than King K. Rool, and he got a costume for the trouble, but nothing for Ridley. Doesn't confirm anything of course, but it is a thing I find interesting.
My only requirement is that Ridley's Down Special turns him invisible with only his eyes visible. Would lead to so many glorious self destructs.

I agree about the too big label being a bit odd for Ridley, when I first got into Smash speculation during the pre-Brawl days I was confused as to why it was being used as a counterargument so often. I guess my first introduction to Ridley being the Melee opening always left me open to a small Ridley, but even after finishing every Metroid game I still didn't agree that his size is a problem, it's not even that uncommon that he's one of the smaller bosses (pretty sure he's the smallest in Super Metroid bar the two Chorizos). What I can definitely see is that his proportions are a problem, but a custom design can fix that imo.
In regards to the ballot I'm not sure Ridley got a lot of votes, most people assumed that voting for him was a waste of time since he was a stage hazard. It's not really a problem though, we already know that Sakurai knows about the demand from his infamous "he's too big and wouldn't be able to fly freely" interview, that he felt the need to address his exclusion like that and so shortly after the game's release says it all, the only other character he did that for was the Ice Climbers iirc.

Mhm, I was introduced to Ridley in Super Metroid first, so he was always a bit of a big character in my head, but I have also never seen that as a problem. Many things are very faithfull in Smash, to loads of things about loads of characters, but for the sake of gameplay, we have Rosalina making Lumas fight (when she always wanted to keep them safe in the games), for example, and loads of characters are bigger and/or smaller than they should be. Things do not have to make sense in a game where a duck from Duck Hunt can headbutt Cloud in the face, haha.
His size was never a problem, though he is surely a trickier character to make work than many. Since Ridley cannot really walk properly on two legs, he could be made to have a shorter stance by being on all four a lot of the time, and his tail can easily curl around him a little ala Charizard, and his wings can easily be pretty small when folded in, and when open, they'd stick out more towards and away from the screen, rather than behind and in front of him. So his lankyness is very doable.
And yeah, I of course do not know how anyone really did in the ballot, but I guess Geno also got a costume for being demanded and high enough in the ballot (I assume), and I am not sure if Geno would get more votes than Ridley at least.
And the 'fly freely' thing was always a silly comment when plenty of characters can originally fly freely. XD
I guess going back to more positive constructive posts here, kinda started on a Proteus Ridley moveset awhile back... For the sake of discussion, any ideas to add onto it? o.o
Had been putting this off awhile but I guess now's a good time to start. Since taking screenshots on my 3DS at the right time was unsurprisingly too much a pain mid-battle, did some screencaps of the new attacks in one of the videos to bring up for new moveset potential discussion... Yeah, the spoiler tag gloves are coming off now aside from posting images.
Interesting how the attack is reminiscent to Phantoon's projectiles in Super Metroid. If it were a special move in a playable moveset, I think shooting like three of those at a time instead of five would be fair, and would be weaker or less in number each time you use it in between recharge time so it can't be spammed as such.
Another new flavor to his arsenal of fireball type attacks, except this one is rather versatile since he can shoot it any direction (straight up, diagonally, down at the ground which engulfs the ground near you, etc). Could see that being a default special attack with recharge time if it were used, minus the ground damaging part.
Self-explanatory. Would be a forward dash attack.
An attack where Ridley stabs his tail into the ground and releases a wave of spiked rocks when he pulls it out. Not sure where that could be incorporated in a moveset. Maybe a final smash or something?
A powerful charged claw attack that leaves behind an afterimage. Could easily see it as a potent forward-Smash move, especially when charged.
The part in the 2nd cutscene where he catches and tosses Samus with his tail to get her off of him I could see maybe being used as a backwards throw animation or something like that, and the cutscene we all know where he pins Samus down and is about to blast her could be his d-throw move.
All and all though, a full moveset now would or should probably incorporate moves between Proteus Ridley and one of the other versions.
p.s. Even if he's destined to remain an NPC for Smash, I would still far prefer to see Proteus Ridley as a boss over bringing back the Other M version. Speaking of, last but not least, dat concept art...
Interesting to note how in the artwork, his neck is still primarily cybernetic even though in-game, only the front of the neck has any cybernetics. Still cool nonetheless.
Kraid has only made two appearances did he not? Super Metroid and some other game. But for him to be in Metroid Prime 4 he survived the destruction of Planet Zebes? Also didnt Mother Brain control Kraid? as she did with all the other aliens? Just wondering here. Now that I think about it Mother Brain for Smash! She does have a body.

What about the two Ridbots from Metroid Blast? Other than that, think you got it all...
Going back to the Proteus moveset, aside from the new colored flavor of fireballs, my favorite new attack is probably the tail tremor where he releases a wave of spiked rocks after putting his tail into the ground... Is kinda like a projectile version of Charizard’s Rock Smash side special now that I think about it. Pinning someone down with his mechanic claw is good as either a throw or finishing move though. Maybe with whatever his final smash would be, have the skies darken during the animation for dramatic effec; reference to how the green skies of SR388 darken with his presence when you get to the end-game of MSR.
I mean, he's a space dragon. Who wouldn't support a space dragon in Smash? Cowards, that's who. (Personally, I'd see him as an air-focused heavy grappler, with a projectile or two to go with it. I love grapplers and heavies, so naturally I support everybody's favorite purple dinosaur.)
Although I'm unsure about his current chances, I'll still be rootin' for Ridley until his day finally comes. Best of luck to all you Ridley fans and hopefully Smash 5 will be his playable debut!

The downward tail stab could be a down air if they got rid of the rocky shockwaves emanating from it. On one hand that's not one of my favorite types of down air since it's useless offstage since it leaves you plummeting down to your probable death (except with Greninija, but even then the move is risky since you plummet upon missing the dair), but it would be a way to incorporate a well known Ridley move, and could act as one way to make a presumed pretty strong character a bit more balanced.
If Ridley becomes a playable character they need to make sure Pyrosphere comes back with Other M Ridley as a stage hazard. That way the playable Ridley can destroy the imposter and reign as Ridley Supreme!
I very silently supported Ridley from the shadows back in the SSB4 days (being a natural lurker). I'm coming out this time to wish you all good luck for this year! I'm actually pretty faithful that Sakurai will find a way to make him work this time around. There were already some weird ass and unconventional characters in Smash 4, some challenging or breaking the mold.
Plus, the demand for him is still there and there are only so many big name nintendo characters that aren't in the game already.
It's funny to see how many names and members I remember from back in the day. I really haven't posted much in the past few years. MasterOfKnees is especially familiar lol.
I'd seriously love to have Ridley in Smash, and have since just about forever. Full support.
I have to admit, though, if they're keeping the Other M look it would probably be a dealbreaker for me. I just seriously can't stand that version of Ridley's design.
In my mind I am literally begging Nintendo to give us the Super Metroid, Prime, or Samus Returns look in Smash 5.
As far as size goes, I think Samus Returns made his design wayyyyy more favorable in terms of proportions. A lot easier to shrink down into a reasonable size.

I honestly can not see it being anything but a hybrid between the Proteus (Samus Returns) Ridley and Super Metroid. Simply because it is the most balanced design, but he should probably have all the mech bits and pieces removed. Other M Ridley worked within the context of his game, but honestly his design is a stocky and ugly thing.
