I'm sorry sir, but your opinion is wrong. Now I am going to type multiple, convoluted paragraphs with poor spelling and explain why.
This guy has the right idea.
But I really don't see how it's too much different from here.

Randomness in competition is what makes Smash special. I know, I know, there are those who love to have an old-school street-fighter style Smash bros, were it is just two guys on a flat stage fighting each other, that the competition is whoever has mastered in cheesing their character more for bland 1-on-1 competition.

But when there is randomness, where there is many items and a full-working stage and four players (or just 2), a person's REAL skills in the game come out. And the competition isn't as much about competing against your opponent as it is beign more skilled than your opponent in being able to survive. It's a different kind of competition.

Randomness does not destroy competition, it simply makes the kind of competition a different one. You call it a player vs a player vs the game. But I call it staying on the freakin' stage.

Yeah, because I much rather fight the game than my opponent. My opponent's random enough as it is.

I'm kind of sad that you're not even allowed to enjoy Brawl as a party game because if we dare admit that we enjoy that we're instantly brawl***s who don't know how to play.

The OP in that IGN thread did say it was about fun, not about how different the mechanics are. Too bad everyone is too busy sucking up to melee to care.

^ Brawl is a fun party game :D. It's just people who take fighters seriously don't care about party games, I think. And the fact it tried to be both makes them mad.

I used to have a blast playing with items while playing with my last girlfriend. Playing hypercompetitively isn't any fun when you're playing against a terrible player; that's why you have the option to turn items on or off.

But hey, to each his own.

And yes, IGN is hilariously bad.

I enjoy IGN for the site layout, and typically they never put up any BS stuff unless it is fairly accurate. I mean like release dates and that sort of insider information. Other sites seems less reliable in those regards and lower quality junk. Plus, the random articles are funny to read at times.

I've always liked 1up.com the best out of all of the general gaming sites.

except that post is 100% right

you can play the game as we play it, three stocks with no items and minimal distractions...that's fine, and it takes a certain skillset.

playing on wacky stages and with items takes skill as well, it's just a different KIND of skillset, one that the competitive community values less. that doesn't make it WRONG, though.

don't get why that post is funny really, though he put it poorly i get what he was saying, and he was putting it in a level-headed, open way.

People trust IGN with their game reviews? =O
I'd be a great IGN reviewer.

- Not intuitive enough
- Some textures are washed out
- Too easy/diificult
- Doesn't have multiplayer OH NO
- Has multiplayer but not online OH NO
- Online multiplayer sucks OH NO
- Is Metal Gear Solid

Realistically a level of randomness can be so high that skillsets dont exist for it at all. Take Roulette for example, you cant be skilled at it it's pure randomness. Or take smash in general with items on. I've played matches in melee and brawl where my winning was entirely determined by the fact that really broken items just happened to spawn next to me or my opponent threw out an attack and the game decided he needed to be punished with something that would explode for it. Too much random for skill to exist.

That said i still regularly play melee with items on. Bunny Hoods and paper fans make everything better.

This. To a certain point, randomness and competition can coexist. However, beyond that point (which stages like Pictochat and even Norfair cross), it starts detracting from the skill involved (the reason I advocate norfair: it detracts from skill a little through its randomness, but adds heavily to it through its incredible differences to any other stage in the game). And at a certain point, it's simply not worth competing in (Brawl with all items on high, full random stage select, for example, is not competitive).

For casual play though? Buttloads of fun.

Can we use this thread to complain about IGN in general? Because seriously, who writes like this:

An IGN Article said:
It was not that long ago that Japan's interactive entertainment industry could have been seen as a defiant dragon; a beast rising angrily towards the heavens, crackling with growing power charged from the burst economic bubble of the 1980s.

I used IGN for it's webmail when I was what, 13 or so, waiting for Melee. It wasn't much better back then.
