@ Zane I agree. Especially offline where laggy moves like grab are even more punishable. Sometimes I like to OoS retreating SH airdodge>Zair or simply drop shield run back and shield dash to OoS Bair or Fsmash/pivot grab back if the opponent tries to chase.

edit and there's Blubbapinecone's OoS jump>footstool>throw bomb down>Dair but without a bomb jump>footstool>bomb pull works. Platforms help too.

^Another SWF coding double post: Ano Mod to the rescue!

We took my mom's cat to the vet. She, the cat, needs to loose weight and have her back teeth pulled (which could be expensive). The visit went pretty well considering my mom hasn't taken her to the vet in 9 years . My mom gets freaked out over that kind of thing, maybe more than the cat :/. Oh well. Moral of the story is: get your pets checked before they need teeth pulled.

Maybe I'll use a larger sig. It looks like the forum can support more that 100 by 500 pix now.

My family's sun conure starting sounding a little raspy, and before we knew it the thing had a fatal respiratory infection and died in my hands :(

I'd say even more important than taking an animal to the vet is doing a little research to know when you need to take it to the vet. Sun conures, for instance, tend to have almost immediate onset for diseases. Had my family known that beforehand, the bird wouldn't have died.

Sorry to hear that Ano. Hoping that there's a bird heaven out there.

A successful first week of the semester! And I'm not too bored when I'm not Smashing. Luckily I have inspiration to write a book and I've been rather efficient at this craft in my free time.

Smashcon is today (technically) and all the roads got iced over yesterday (technically), so we pushed the tournament back by two hours and I am hosuing friends from Alabama in Baton Rouge and my sis's place, but I had work tonight and therefore I may be stuck in Covington tomorrow which is at least an hour away and yeah. Not looking good. HOWEVER, Jnig and other members of the Smashcon staff have said the weather forecast is supposed to be warmer than freezing enough to shut down roads and brisdges statewide so I still have some hope. I'm going to try and get some sleep and when I wake, I'm going to look up possible routes to get to BR and if I get them, I'm taking them, even if I'm super late to the party.

And with one more post Rizen hits the big 5000!

On the OoS note, I must play noobs all the time because I can almost always get a solid utilt. Could just be lucky spacing :3

Edit: Oh, and of course, I wish you good fortune with the roads, Bomber.

I typically just play Basic Brawl or Team Battle, but honestly... I'm sick of it.

Anyone wanna play me today? I play a lot of characters, but Link is my favorite to play... Matter of fact, the way Link plays in this game is literally the only reason I haven't dropped it a long time ago.

5,000! (I spend way too much time online)

The thing about Utilt is technically it can't be done Out of Shield which means unless you power shield Link must drop his shield first which takes 7 frames iirc. So Utilt starts on frame 14 and typically the opponent can attack again before that. If you jump cancel Usmash/Spin Attack or jump/grab bomb throw it exits shielding without shield drop lag.
BTW if you are having trouble Utilting by accidentally Usmashing, try to turn 'Tap Jump' off in options.

Okay. Ano replied 1st but if you don't see him on join me.
We're a bit far but hopefully our connection will be okay. Sometimes EC states and I have bad connections.

Edit, GGs :) The lag was heavy but at least it was consistent :)
The times I randomly UpBed or used forward attacks instead of up or vice versa were because I was using a different controller before playing this and my thumbs hadn't adjusted to the GC controller yet lol.

GGs, Rizen.

Was a little laggy at points, but not too bad, imo. I enjoyed playing you a lot. A lot of our matches were a tad too long to save replays of, which was unfortunate. The Ganon matches were actually kinda funny, lol. I'd be down for some more later if you are.

Anonano, sorry we didn't get to play right away. I'd still like to play you later today, if you're free/interested.

I gotcha. It connected real well when a hardish hit would push me back a bit so unless their initial attack had little ending lag and they also had a very quick and long attack to follow, the utilt would tip them nicely. I've been trying the SH options OoS and I like them quite a bit. I'm still learning a LOT when it comes to competitive play and am just trying to work it into the style I've already developed (working smarter rather than harder, I guess).

I play with tap jump off already; I just have a bad habit of making tech errors :\ I've been practicing the inputs though and they are coming out more consistently. Speaking of which, I did change the R to attack and it has helped a lot in performing bombsmashes. Actually seems like a viable option now haha.

On another note, it's good to see such activity around here!

I prefer retreating SH Nair, but YES, nair OoS, especially after power shielding, is one of Link's best and safest OoS moves imo.
The thing I like most about OoS Full-hop N-air is the auto-cancel. After that auto-cancel, everything from landing to double jump aerials are open.
@ Rizen Rizen The only thing about Blubba's set up is enemies with either multiple jumps and quick aerials, or characters with deceptive auto-cancels.

Also on OoS, it all depends on the move blocked and where the opponent is afterwards: If you can help it, powershield as much as possible.
If it's a punishable smash give em an up-b.
If it's jabs and quick tilts I like to run back and reset spacing.
With stuff like MK D-air crossups be extra careful as they can and will do that multiple times until they Nado safely away, or if you sit still, break your shield with it > easy punish > possible gimp > GGs. (Though I've stuffed MK D-airs with full-hop N-air on powershield)

I bring it up because even Scizor gets locked down in block, so we should really work on our close range defense a bit.
Example being big Ike mains with their impeccable PSing I.E. Old San matches

^This.

Though, I must admit one of my favorite parts of Zelda games is reading the text aloud in voices I create myself based on the initial weird grunt sound they make when initiating dialogue. Some fuuuun times.

Blah who cares about lip synching. If we assume Link talks even though he never actually says something then I don't see why this with Zelda, Groose, etc. should bother us.

The reason Link doesn't talk is because we are him and see the world from his perspective. He says and thinks what we say and think while playing. This feels natural while watching cut scenes during play; what doesn't seem natural is unsynched lips while watching a movie on our computer :D

I for one am of the highly unpopular opinion that Link deserves characterization independent of the player.
I'm also not opposed to him finally talking as long as they get his dialogue just right. When Nintendo does characterization right it's brilliant (See Mario and Luigi in nearly every RPG they're in...) Mario is courageous and happy-go-lucky, Luigi is mild mannered and somewhat shy and both have a lot of hidden depth to them. Mario is filled with hope and joy in the face of danger, and Luigi demonstrates great courage despite a fearful disposition and the nuances of their mannerisms are well pronounced.

We're all just sooo worried that our perspective of Link will be wrong and it'll ruin the series for us. Other M was a pretty good example of poor characterization with the blame falling on Yoshio Sakamoto and his awful portrayal of a character who quite frankly has a potentially indescribably interesting psychological makeup. Samus (Just IMO) would be a fairly lonely person who struggles to make human connections and doesn't waste many words, a lost soul marching onward after the death of her family, the chozo, many comrades, trusted authority figures, and a maternal bond with a highly misunderstood creature. Her characterization would be able to expound upon PTSD, deep seated resentment of corrupt authority, a traumatic childhood, and a thorough retcon of the Adam Malkovitch story.

Link in theory would be a good template for the explanation of how childhood innocence and wonder give way to good nature and courage in the face of frightful odds, and how one's good will can light an otherwise extremely bleak world. A boy becomes a man while risking life and limb to restore peace and balance to a kingdom in peril, and really demonstrate the inner strength and fortitude of an altruistic young man born of no specialty , and how his determination pushes him past all obstacles (in a way mirroring the player's desire to playthrough the game).

I don't trust Nintendo to do a good job adding Link's lines and voice acting in. The English voice would sound different than the "Srcraw!" and sound effects we've all come to love from the current Japanese actor :c Why fix what's not broken?

I've played the Paper Mario and most of his platformer games and Mario has the same, for lack of a better term, presence as Link. He says nothing except sound effects and an occasional catch phrase "Here we gooo!" etc. I've never really seen him talk.
Maybe he does in the Mario and Luigi games, which I haven't played. :ohwell:

At least I'm sure we can all be confident that Nintendo wouldn't make the same mistake of "Excuuuuuuse me, Princess." They're more compassionate to their fans now.

Your words are sincerely inspiring and I would love to believe in what you're saying; but unfortunately, he would probably just come out sounding and acting like Naruto :/

I think I am open to him having a voice because the hero in each of the stories is different, meaning he could always be played by a different actor dependent on story elements including his age, upbringing, and supposed worldview. The developers already seem to be pretty free with how they visually represent him in everything from concept/guide art to mannerisms/animations to even his general actions when placed in different situations, while his dialogue (or lack thereof) seems to remain the only constant. I doubt they'll ever give him a true voice, though; I think the idea of the Silent Hero is just too central to the theme of the story. He doesn't speak, he acts (and grunts XD).

"Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."
"BELIEVE IT!"

Edit: @ Heero Yuy Heero Yuy Oh my, I certainly hope so.

All very agreeable points, I just happen to be a hopeless optimist when it comes to nintendo.
Voice isn't a do or die thing for me really, I'd more or less like Link to have more expression in general. I don't mind him being silent, but I do tire slightly of him just being "me" in a game. Link having more depth as a character would do well for the series' story aspect of making him more involved than just showing up in Green clothes and doing things that old people said he would before he was born.

@ Heero Yuy Heero Yuy I sincerely believe nintendo had very little to do with both the CD-I Link and cartoon Link as nintendo tends to make Link a rather serious young chap. I agree wholeheartedly, they couldn't screw it up that bad.

@ Rizen Rizen Ah Noboyuki Hiyama, where hath thou gone, whether it be Siegfried in soul calibur or Batsu in Rival schools, he hasn't returned since melee...
and I'm more or less referring to the implicit details of Mario and Luigi, rather than the explicit ones. It's the inner charm and charisma of Mario that makes him stand out, and it's Luigi's relatable introvertion that makes him so likable.

@ Naroghin Naroghin Without a doubt, there are a million and a half ways to write a determined young man character without him being Naruto lol, but I get your point. "Possibility is endless until you stop trying"

I more or less just want Nintendo to make a more earnest attempt at an arching story with detail and intrigue.
and on that note, I'd love to see Link be a little bit more flashy (hence hyrule warriors yada yada) as a swordsman and his large repertoire of talents.

Haha, that's for sure. On a slightly related note, do you guys think we'll ever see a female Link? Or do you think female heroism won't go farther than character roles like Impa, Saria, Ashei, Telma, etc? I know the prophecy always says a "boy," but it doesn't have to, does it? Just arbitrary musings...

You must mean an official one and not rule 63 fan art, lol. Maybe *shrugs*

Link varies a little but all Links (that aren't Toon Links) are essentially the same character. They haven't made any drastic changes, just little things like age and hair color.

@ Zane the pure Zane the pure I, too, was a hopeless optimist for Nintendo...until I learned of Steam (Well, technically when I learned Smash Bros. characters weren't balanced, but then when I learned of Steam).

Now I'm just a complete video game nerd

F'n A. FU mother nature who froze my state and shut down interstates, high ways and roads. We still got the best of you!
