At the regional NorCal tournament, R3, I money matched Smoke2Jointz for $20. That was my first dosage of hype, of pressure.

I honestly don't remember the last time I've felt that nervous.

Match 1: L (Fox) vs. Smoke2Jointz (Falcon)

Match 2: L (Fox) vs. Smoke2Jointz (Falcon)

Match 3: L (Falco) vs. Smoke2Jointz (Falcon)

Mainly what I'm asking for, is advice to deal with Falcons, and how to deal with pressure from real life. I was listening to music at the time and I could not hear the crowd; at all. I still felt nervous. Any advice is appreciated.

a lot of the times i find that the trick isn't "learn to play better under pressure," but it's how to be thinking so you don't get nervous, or put pressure on yourself in the first place.

sometimes i think that all the clutch players like dajuan and mango aren't super-good at "playing nervous," but that they are just able to deal with the factors that would make most players jittery, unfocused, messing up tech skill, etc.

as you get more tournament experience, it's not all doing tech skill when your hands are shaking; you also learn how to get in the right mindset to avoid too much pressure. the more clutch you are, the more your mind works to turn stressors to your benefit.

recently, i've just been focusing on staying happy and enthusiastic the day of the tournament. it works really well for me.

maybe the music was the problem
I tried listening to music for tourny sets once and I was in my head way to much. I could focus but not on the match, and the music wasn't calming me down.

Don't go to the ledge so much against Falcon. There were times you just let S2J on by going to the ledge when he was in no position to grab it and had no incentive to grab it.

I'd only grab it when he's down below the stage. When he's forced to go to the ledge he's extremely easy to kill/edgehog. Since you went to the ledge almost every time, he went to the stage unharmed. Falcon wants to recover to the stage and not the ledge since he's much more gimpable going to the ledge. Basically you were covering only his least favorable option every time. It's predictable when he's going to go to the ledge since you pretty much should be forcing him there and/or he'll be far enough below the stage to where even if he does make it back on you can punish him.

When he's trying to recover above the stage, just BAir him and knock him off again instead of going to the ledge.

At least that's my sort of universal rule for edgegaurding Falcon.

This set was very nerve wracking for me also

overall, the number one rule is to not let your mistakes piss you off/ make you nervous. If you need time to calm down then you can try camping (with Falco lasers)

of course, your opponent might not lay off the pressure after a mistake

My favorite thing about not maining a space animal is when you're nervous you can slow the game down to your advantage. Sometimes you just need to catch your breath and you'll be fine, but S2J just wouldn't give it to you.

When in doubt, plank the edge :D

Ah, thanks a lot. I don't play a lot of Falcons, so I haven't got the experience yet. I'll keep this in mind.

Maybe next time we meet, we can play a serious set, no money. :)

I've come to realize that listening to music during my matches doesn't benefit me in any way

I'm not going to be listening to them during matches anymore

i've tried listening to music. the result was me focusing on the music, making it hard for me to do anything against the tempo of the song.

i'm not experienced with tourney play or hyped matches, but when i watched that set i saw a lot of myself in your nervous *** fox. lol

the few tourneys i've entered, i would find myself thinking "i meant to do this" "don't **** this up" or "i'm ****ing up right now" haha
those are obviously wasted thoughts. your inner monologue needs to focus on what you and your opponent are doing or about to do, not what you've already done. hope this helps.

p.s. good luck in the future, L. you're someone i like to watch. (giggidy)

planking is dropping off and regrabbing the ledge

basically stalling the ledge

good for when you need to collect yourself but easy to punish (obviously)

As for the Fox versus Falcon match up:

You're going to want to do a lot of nair into bair. The theory is that if you nair correctly and hit their shield and land behind them (which you want to do to avoid getting grabbed), the bair will hit them if they try to do almost anything out of shield. Eventually the opponent catches on and starts wavedashing or rolling away after you nair their shield so you have to adapt and quickly dash back out of your nair and grab them. A grab leads into an up throw which leads into nair or bair. Just remember that you wanna stay on top of falcon, you dont wanna give him room to dash dance. Oh and when you get him off the stage, just bair him until he's too far off to recover. It's really gay, but there is really no way for falcon to get around it unless you **** up.

Jman and Cactuar play the match up quite flawlessly so just watch their videos on youtube.
Jman has a bunch of videos versus Hax and Scar.
Cactus has a very good set versus Darkrain.
I even have a match up versus Hax from last time I played him in tournament:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeTwIIbxa9I
There is no match 3, but I won on Dreamland.

As for dealing with pressure:

I have the same problem :(
Chops told me to try and pretend it's a friendly and that you are playing to have fun. Try not to think about the money or the tournament factor.

Hope I helped.
