King Dedede and Nintendo Open up Project SORA

Nintendo opened up a new company with King Dedede as the head of this new division.
Nintendo owns up to 72% of this company. Project SORA is the somewhat succesor of King DeDeDe's previous company SORA LTD. They plan to bring Hardcore new IP's to the Wii

I really hope it will be a new franchise.
King Dedede said it will be different, so hopefully this will mean a new franchise, or taking an existing franchise in a new direction.

Well, this is pretty much a nintendo company. It's not a 3rd party and the lack of them is the real main problem in this drought (at the current time, in a few months we seem to be having a lot of 3rd party games coming).

True, but if Nintendo had enough franchises to release 3 AAA titles a year, I wouldn't mind the total lack of third party support.

Nintendo makes all the best games for it's consoles, so much so that I mostly stopped trusting third party efforts years ago.

On the other hand, unless they do a complete rehaul, I don't think a new Smash game would take as long as some of the other games in development nowadays unless they were specifically designing it for a system that was, itself, in development. I think he's working on a Wii game.

I'm actually think Sakurai might do Kid Icarus. The game that they are working on is a game Nintendo(EAD I assume) could not do on it's own, due to EAD(I assume) is busy on Zelda, Mario,Pikmin and possibly Star Fox and F-Zero, as that's what EAD does. Plus Sakurai did put Pit in Brawl for no apparent reason.

Yeah, why is Pit in Brawl?

I never heard of him prior to the game, his series is not particularly well known, his mechanics are kinda generic among the fliers in Brawl, he is an incredibly annoying opponent for newbs, and frankly, there is nothing unique enough about him to warrent his appearance (as opposed to characters like ROB with his hardware status and Ice climbers having the two-fighter mechanics).

Yeah, maybe if we start one now it'll actually be good and NOT get delayed twice. Or maybe it'll get released sometime in 2010 and it'll be as good as Melee (not that that's likely).

Not that I really need to say this, but I'm not looking forward to this. I don't like Sakurai and Nintendo giving us a "mystery" project reeks of bad news to me. Either it's going to be something "new" -- as in, not really new, but they just play it out to be that way -- or something completely new but not really that creative at all.

The fact that they're making it mysterious also says something. Actually, two things. First of all, they're trying to build up hype. They know that the majority of hardcore gamers like Sakurai and they know that many of them will follow a game he's producing. Also, they want the game to get attention. Perhaps they know it might not be well-received and want to give it attention so it has a better chance of succeeding, or maybe they just want to give this title a lot of attention because it's intended to be a big title.

I'm just throwing guesses out there, but...I'm not expecting much. If Sakurai proves me wrong, maybe I'll gain more respect for him, even if he is a communist.

While I would enjoy a new Kid Icarus game, and I have been a fan of the series since I got the gameboy game (I played it before the NES version)...

I seriously doubt they are making a new Kid Icarus game.

I always wondered why so many epic looking titles are cancelled.

However, in the phoenix game, I blame it on controls that probably did not work (flight games tend to have control problems, similar to Mario's swim mechanics), and the fact that the main character kinda looked a little freaky.

I doubt companies make million dollar decisions based on the name of a company.

I think it will most likely be a new franchise. I don't think Nintendo would commission someone else with an idea that they could do. It's got to be something else in general.
