Mockup art is very often used as a placeholder for preorders. I can confirm living in Mexico(because we also have Spanish, duh) that the preorder image for Star Fox Zero before it was shown as Star Fox Zero circa E3 was a SF logo with Fox's Sm4sh render on it. Now it's been changed, but it's worth pointing out. The FE: Fates preorder image remains a still image of Aqua from the first trailer, so what do I know.

Even if we do get a Nintendo Direct sometime before October, I don't think we'll be getting anything big announced for Smash. They could release some characters before the ballot ends, but I doubt they'd have anyone who is ranking high on the ballot as one. When Sakurai says pre-ballot, I think he means 'before the ballot was announced/opened,' and post-ballot means 'after the ballot was announced/opened.' This causes me to speculate that, as I've brought up before, Sakurai and his team are creating the characters who are ranking high on the ballot. It makes no sense to me that they'd wait until after the ballot. Sakurai said he can't hold his team together forever, and what else would be working on? Ryu/Lucas/Roy were pre-ballot, Peach's/Hyrule Castle and Tourney mode were in development also, but released later. There's literally NO REASON for Sakurai and his team to do nothing for a couple months while some characters are clearly more popular than others.

Well given the data mining evidence of two DLC slots, its extremely likely Sakurai is still working on getting two more preballot DLC characters out.

It could happen, if the character is someone with a trophy (like K. Rool, Wolf, Inkling, or Rayman), but like you said, its VERY unlikely. If the new character ends up being someone like Isaac, Bandanna Dee, Snake, or any other character with no trophy, it wouldn't work. But if Sakurai decided to do that, it would be very clever.

I don't think so. I think the slots mean jack, they just threw a bunch of random slots in enough to cover what they had planned, and two more happened to be left in.

Honestly if I wasn't voting for K. Rool, I wouldn't be mad if my choice didn't make it in. If he doesn't make it in then I will lose all respect for sakurai. I don't want this to be a hate on sakurai thread but he better not just give us the costume instead of an actual character. He has been a huge troll in the past and I am starting to get so sick of it. I'm tired of people always defending him for his dumbest choices.

Sakurai never said the next characters are specifically the ballot winners. He specified that the current DLC were all preballot and that that only several more are going to be made as DLC. "Several" could imply the two characters on the data, and maybe 1-2 post ballot winners. Or several could imply just two remaining characters in general (for our sake, lets hope its the former)

He did say future DLC would be "fan service," but keep in mind fan service is a very loose definition. First off, you can say all the DLC we got so far was "fan service," as 3 were highly requested veterans. If we get two more preplanned characters like Wolf or Snake for example, you could easily argue these DLC fighters are fan service. Secondly, he stated future DLC is fan service, without specifying whether this DLC is strictly ballot winners.

So really all we can guarantee is we are getting 2 characters at the least, and we will have no idea when the winner is made, however if preballot stuff is the current project, I would not expect the winner to be playable for well into next year. (probably sometime in April, as it took Mewtwo about 6 months to make.)

I can still respect Sakurai even if King K. Rool is in the game, it is not about "defending" him in the slightest. I do not like him as a creative director, but hating on him for his character selection is silly.

That's why its obviously just another fake 4chan leak. K. Rool is the HIGHEST rated newcomer in both the west and Japan. There's no way they'd pick Dixie from the ballot over K. Rool. If Dixie gets in, its as a pre-ballot character. If they switched Dixie and Inkling it'd be more believable.

I heard that Agent 3 is just Inkling, so that's not the negative factor here. Though honestly, they'd still CALL them Inkling, so it is an odd one. Regardless, the logic behind Dixie's pick is ridiculous. From the ballot, K. Rool, well, rools. If they switched Inkling and Dixie (Dixie being pre-ballot), it'd be MUCH more believable.

This is fake to me and I also hope it is too. IF this was real, it would be so disappointing. We'd basically get two new unique characters. The logic of choosing Dixie over K. Rool is also ridiculous. Not many people are voting for her, so it would be basically saying "Oh you guys want K. Rool? Too bad, heres Dixie. I know you are going to buy it any way."

Yoshi's New Island is another one. It's ironic that Nintendo called these games New Super Mario Bros. (specifically 2 and U) and Yoshi's New Island when they barely have anything "new".

Hmm.... A bit unrelated to the discussion at hand, but do you think the Fumes from DKC 2 will be K Rool's custom neutral special moves if he were to get into the game? It would be a safe bet that would be the case, but due to there only being 2 allowed per special, one of the gases may be left out. There are Blue (Freezes Kongs), Red (Slows Kongs down), and Purple (Reverses the game's controls). I'd imagine they'd leave the Purple gas out due to obvious reasons.
