The Idea Behind This Thread

The history of the Shonen Jump magazine began in the 1960’s and has since been in the forerunner for manga in japan. With its rich characters and incredible stories, they’ve capture the hearts of millions all around the world. Nowadays, many of us wonder what would happen if these beloved franchises were to meet, and duke it out with each other. Various games have dipped their toes into this idea, starting with Famicom Jump: Hero Restuden in 1989 to the most recent attempt begin Jump Force in 2019. There's just so much potential with this idea, and with the 55th anniversary for Shonen Jump coming next year, I wanted to use this thread to come up with the best fighting game concept possible that we would love to play.

Rules:
  • Only characters owned by the Shonen Jump Magazine
  • Explain Why You Want Something To Be Added Into The Concept
  • Be Passionate and Do Your Research
  • I'll be using Straw Poll to hold votes, so be ready for that

As a starting point, I’ll be putting in 4 characters that are obvious choice for a game like this. (Goku, Naruto, Luffy, Ichigo) I don’t have to explain too much about these guys, they’ll always be main stays. They're known all around the world and are the characters you think of when you think of Anime. This is taking inspiration from that cool Anime FighterZ thread that's going on too.

GokuNaruto UzumakiMonkey D. LuffyIchigo Kurosaki

This is the first time I've done a thread like this, so if you guys could help me out with how we should go about this, I'm all ears.

Job #1: Let's add 4 new shonen jump characters to the roster. Anybody is welcome for this one, whether it's a newcomer or a veteran from previous titles. The four most voted characters will get in.

Here's an example how to do -

Job 1: Manga/Anime Character

Name: Denji
Series: Chainsaw Man
This man is cool, he's got a cute dog and chainsaws.

Of course you should probably add more details than I did, but my vote won't count for this one. Cant wait to see your ideas!

The Saviour of the Century's End
KENSHIRO

Series: Fist of the North Star

The 64th successor to the assassination art of Hokuto Shinken, Kenshiro was born into a time of strife and chaos. In the distant future of 199X, nuclear war erupted, turning most of the world into an uninhabitable wasteland. Humanity managed to survive, however, though it was reduced to desperate farmers and roaming gangs of thugs. After his fiancee was kidnapped, Kenshiro wanders the ruins of Japan, helping those in need and annihilating those who would prey on the innocent. He's kind-hearted and empathetic to most, but hurt those who cannot defend themselves and you will quickly find that you are already dead.

Kenshiro is basically Bruce Lee and Mad Max mixed together - he fights with martial arts, though the show's definition of martial arts is... generous.

He also has a few techniques that let him fire ki energy, though they're still fairly short-range (he won't be using Kamehamehas), along with using weapons like nunchuks. (he also has the ability to regenerate his shirts somehow) One of Jump's most famous characters, and a mainstay in crossover games like Jump Ultimate Stars or Jump Force, it seems safe to say that he'll be in here eventually.

Job #1: New Anime/Manga Character - Kankichi Ryotsu

Kankichi Ryotsu is the main character and anti-hero of the comedy/gag manga (which should diversify genre representation a bit more), KochiKame (in short from "Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen Mae Hashutsujo"), written and illustrated by Osamu Akimoto, beginning from Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine in September 21th, 1976. The manga focuses on a lazy, middle-aged cop Ryotsu's misadventures as he comes up with money-making schemes alongside the help from his fellow officer colleagues in the Police Box, Keiichi Nakagawa and Reiko Akimoto, which always end up in failure after a brief success (losing his earned money to pay damages caused by his comical antics), usually under the anger of his boss, Daijiro Ohara.

In Japan, the manga is immensely popular because of it's comedic tone and easily accessible self-contained stories (that aren't episodic compared to other Jump mangas) to the point that real-life celebrities from the country often made appearances and fifteen bronze statues were erected in Kameari, where it took place (a memorial hall is also being built, finishing in 2024). It was even the third longest-running manga of all time for about 40 years from 1976 to 2016 with 1,960 chapters and 200 volumes (plus a 201st volume in 2021) and the eighth best-selling on a list (beating even JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan), having gotten many animated appearances (earliest being 1980 commercials and a 1985 film, before the 1996 anime series and it's two OVA films came up, besides specials with the final airing in 2016, which was also famous in Spain and India), several live-action films/drama/stage adaptations and multiple Jump crossovers, all thanks to KochiKame's role as a very important part/staple of the magazine/brand's history (besides special events for it's 30th anniversary with Dragon Ball in one of the one-shot mangas, alongside Lupin III, Golgo 13 & Kinnikuman, and the series' own video games for the original PlayStation, SEGA Saturn and Nintendo DS), such as two Famicom RPGs, a Game Boy quiz game Cult Jump, mobile titles (Jumputi Heroes and Jikkyou Janjan Stadium), Jump Super/Ultimate Stars and J-Stars Victory VS+, thus making Ryotsu a veteran pick here.

As shown in previous Shonen Jump fighting crossover games, Kankichi Ryotsu can make use of his slapstick-like demeanors to fight against the opponent by smacking them inside a cartoonish smoke cloud and pulling off unusual items out of nowhere to utilize them as non-conventional weapons like newspapers, Japanese signs like a bat, fire extinguishers, throwing cards, remote-controlled toy tanks/helicopters with a machine gun turret, giant drums to summon constant soundwaves as he bashes them, kicking out his sandal/shoe as it flies forward and spinning tops as ground-traveling projectiles and fireworks (which he can use with his rocket launcher).

He can also use samurai katana skills (though they're unpolished compared to the likes of Jump's swordsmen such as Ichigo's), his bike/bicycle to rush towards the opponent, shoot at them with a pistol/handgun or rocket launcher/RPG, kick out arching cans, lock the opponent for a while with handcuffs that works as a stun special (akin to Guile's in Street Fighter: The Movie) and eat several ramen bowls at once for a temporary few second-lasting buff, besides summoning a real military tank to shoot down the opponent with a powerful exploding projectile and covering himself down as Daijiro Ohara drops down giant stone letters around himself by shouting his signature "BAKA-MON!" (ぱっかもーん !! - "YOU IDIOT!").

Sweet. I made a thread like this a while back but I couldn't really run it well, hopefully this doesn't lose momentum the way mine did.

As for my submission...

Gon Freecss
1672325947285.png

Gon is the protagonist of Hunter x Hunter, one of Shonen Jump's darkest series and in this day and age one of its most popular thanks to the stellar 2011 anime adaptation. Gon is a 12 year old boy who strives to become a Hunter in order to find his father, another famous Hunter, and along the way meets many friends and foes, some of which eventually push him to his breaking point.

Since JUS, the Chimera Ant arc of Hunter x Hunter has concluded, which ended with
Gon using up all of his Nen to brutally kill Neferpitou
which could be implemented into (one of?) his moveset(s) in a unique way.

Gon is an extremely popular character due to being a unique twist on the Shonen protagonist trope and is a staple of Jump crossover fighters, not missing out on a single one since Jump Super Stars. With HxH's mainstream popularity it would make a ton of sense for him to be part of the reveal lineup.

Regarding the opening post, actually, the Shonen Jump magazine started in 1960's (1968) and One Piece was serialized in 1997 (two years earlier), but anyhow...

Character Name: Tsubasa Oozora
Series of Origin: Captain Tsubasa
Character Origin:
Weekly Shonen Jump, April 13th, 1981

I think this would be a nice change of pace from the archetypical "fighting manga" characters. Tsubasa having a football-related moveset would be a really neat and unique moveset, and it's pretty much singlehandedly responsible for making association football as popular as it is in Japan. He might not have the same tragic backstory, in-depth lore or ridiculous abilities as some of the other characters on the roster, but Tsubasa's been an undeniably big influence on Japanese culture, and he'd honestly be pretty cool too.

Not sure if counts, Jojo's started to be publicated in the Shonen Jump but starting this part it changed to the Ultra Jump (the thread clearly specifies that it must be Shonen Jump and not Shueisha has a whole so...), but anyway I will go with...

JOHNNY JOESTAR
You are probably asking "Who?", most likely since his part isn't adaptated to anime yet (thought is actually the next in the list), Jonathan "Johnny" Joestar is the protagonist of the 7th part of Jojo's Bizarre Adventures named Steel Ball Run. While the part itself is quite obscure for the outsiders for the fandom this is considered the best or at least one of the best parts in Jojo's and he has very unique traits that would make him an interesing fighter.

Starting with the fact that Johnny is paraplejic, he can't walk so he usually moves crawling OR MOUNTING HIS HORSE since in the story the Steel Ball Run is a horse race across America that Johnny is participating, he is a very skilled rider so even in his condition when he is mounting his horse Slow Dancer. Apart of that his stand is also very unique, his stand Tusk allows him to make spin and shoot his own nails as projectiles, gross? kinda but is effective. Thought Tusk's abilities evolves during the process of the story in a way similar to Echoes in Diamond is Unbreakable, while this is spoiled in Jojo's own fighting game All-Star Battle I will start to add the spoil flag in the next lines.

Learning the concept of the Golden Rectangle Johnny evolves his stand into ACT 2 making his abilities more effective and stronger giving a drill effect to his nails, in ACT 3 this ability is increased with the power of create wormholes that he can use to hide or to rip other people. Finally ACT 4 makes use of the superior version of the spin called the Golden Spin having the power of infinite rotation, making any object rotate eternally, everything down to individual cells spin on themselves, greatly distorting the shape of the target being unable to escape unless Johnny shoots them with a spin of equal energy but in the opposite direction. All this would sound broken but if he was able to be toned down in ASB then I think it could work here

I submit Johnny since I'm quite tired that most of the part the only guys who enters in the roster are the ones from Stardust Crusaders, Johnny is also the protagonist with the coolest stand imo (maybe alongside Giorno and Gappy).

We will begin voting now. Only four will be getting in this job. Since we have quite a few submissions, you'll have to put who you want the most in order. For example,

1. Ryotsu
2. Deku
3. Johny Joestar
4. Jotaro Kujo

Make sure to answer fairly, don't just submit your character as number one. I'll tally up the votes. This vote will end on Tuesday, and we'll then go on to the next jobs.

Edit: 92MilesPrower mention that I should show your options, so here they are
  • Kenshiro
  • Deku
  • Captain Tsubasa
  • Jotaro Kujo
  • Johnny Joestar
  • Gon Freecs
  • Ryotsu Kochikame
  • Frieza
  • Denji

This is a tough one.

1. Ryotsu (while I'm not familiar with the series beyond the Dragon Ball crossover where Ryotsu tried to arrest Freeza for parking violations, by my understanding, his series is basically Japan's equivalent of the Simpsons - a goofy sitcom-like series that ran for roughly 40 years, outlasting countless others and only coming to an end because the creator wanted to wrap it up. Plus, I figure his series is less well-known compared to the others, so I put him at #1 to give him a boost)

2. Kenshiro (self-vote, but I really want to see him in here)

3. Jotaro (I mainly follow the anime, so I'm more familiar with Jotaro than I am with Johnny, and since Jotaro's been in three parts of the series (I think he had a cameo in part 5 as well, which bumps him up to four), I feel like he best represents the series)

4. Gon (Hunter x Hunter is huge, and while I have my issues with it (chapters feel like walls of text at times, and the constant hiatuses make it feel almost impossible to follow the increasingly complex arcs), it would be a huge missed opportunity for Gon to not get in here)

Honourable mentions to Deku (I figure his series is well-known and current enough that he might not need the extra push from me) and Freeza (it would be great to have him in here eventually; I just think that we should cover more series before we start to double up).

Nice to see that the votations are still open.
  1. Denji (absolute favorite, I didn't watched the anime yet but the manga is easy one of my top favs)
  2. Johnny (I understand why people vote for Jotaro but I really would like to see Johnny, his abilities are very unique even for Jojo standards. At least for the side of the protagonists)
  3. Ryoutsu (the roster needs some oldies and he is truly old, not in the bad sense of course)
  4. Kenshiro (a must have honesty)

Job #2: Choose The Roster Size
Now that we have a few more characters in the game, let's decide how big the roster will be. Name a certain number and your reasoning for it.
For example, we could start at 24 characters as a base roster, to mirror Dragon Ball FighterZ.

I say we should have at least 40 characters in the base roster. Jump has such a huge library of characters that it would genuinely be a waste not to go on the high end of things. Granted, I know it's probably much easier said than done which is why I'm actually going lower than I would like (my thread was gonna have like 50 characters before I cut it short)

Soul_of_Xeno Soul_of_Xeno Not submitting a roster size, but I'm sorry to say this about a opening post's roster again, as KochiKame was actually serialized in 1976 (you probably went with that obscure anime film from my submission).

I'm going to nominate 55 characters. Jump's 55th anniversary is coming up, and given how many series we're inevitably bringing into this (and quite a few of those series are probably going to have multiple characters - I'm not sure if people would be satisfied with Jotaro as the only JoJo character in the game, for example), I figure it's best to aim for a higher number.

Maybe having a roster this large is excessive, but I figured I'd throw the number out there. (Jump Ultimate Stars for the DS had a slightly larger roster with 56 characters, though that was a sequel)

Assuming I can't vote for my own (it's fairer that way), I'll vote for 40; it might not be much different from 36, but I figure even a few more spaces for characters will make a difference.

Alright, sorry for not being active yesterday, was a little busy. Anyways, here are the results for the roster size.

40: 1
36: 0
55: 5

Our Roster will consist of 55 characters. We have a ton of room for all the characters we want.

For our next job, we’ll be deciding the name of the game, and also the name of the thread.

Example: Job 4 - Name of the Game

Shonen Jump FighterZ is a cool name, and I like FighterZ.
