This has been on my mind for the past several weeks, and my thoughts have begun to grow more concious and inevitable to avoid. I think I should address this and ask some questions.

I know you all hate to hear it, but I need to say the S word. School.

Pierce had said, I believe it was in the Marth mixups thread, about how our metagame has developed so much over the summer. It occured easily that since we had more time to think, practice, and test, our metagame would obviously develop over the time we wouldn't have school. Tournaments would also be thrown left and right because college and school wouldn't be in the way and attendance would increase by many many people.

Sounds really good, right? Ok. what about when we have school?

I haven't been in SWF long enough to know this cycle, in fact, I joined in May, when schools and colleges were winding down. What I would like to know is the following: What will happen when we are all back in school? My thoughts slightly scare me.

Obviously not everyone will be on all the time. Less matches, except for the weekends, less tourneys, and probably less time to think of new techniques and how to renew old techniques.

Will we all basically get worse, is my main question. What will happen to the Marth boards?

Please discuss and share your recollections, or your predictions.

Eh, well, I used to go to NYC weeklies during school time (Friday nights, so it didn't really interfere). This was before the Weeklies were outta commision (but they should be back soon!)

If you're serious about competative Smash, expect Friday nights to be consumed like this.

don't fret much, look at melee, in the beginning it had lapses like this, just strive until next summer, and not everyone here is in school anymore.

If you're serious about Smash, think of the weekends as not cram studying, but Smashfests.

I seem to have gone to school the earliest out of all the regulars here. I've noticed my tech skill (most specifically my DI) has got down the drain. I can actually TECH on average a bit more after learning to use Y to tech instead of my shoulder buttons like in Melee. I'm also still able to do DS out of shield w/o Tap Jump (edits in a smirk for comical relief >=P).

But... it's obvious the lack of serious opponents for me has made it difficult to perform as well as I use to.

I suggest that if you're serious about your Smash, that you still give your priority to your schoolwork over your Smash career.

Because when you retire, chances are the assets that will support you are from your savings that you've collected by having a decent job, not spamming Down smash and Shuttle Loop. ^^

I'm lucky. I have a brother, and I trained my friends (who aren't quite on my level) so it's not hard to get good practice. Since my friends and I founded the Zodiac Braves, I have reliable practice regardless.

Joining a crew is ftw. If you're old enough, joining a crew with friends that don't mind picking you up is MORE ftw.

EDIT: Hush junk. My computer is running slow today and I don't know why :-(

My computer is pretty fast too, but it's probably AIM. This is why I never use that garbage, lol.

I'm in the process of trying to train a few of my friends, so once school starts I'll be happy because I'll see some of my friends that play that I haven't been in touch with over the summer, so it ain't that bad.

ok, i'm almost 17, with almost a liscense. A crew could absolutely be a good answer.

Sadly, there are only 2 kids in my school who have the ability to beat me, but still have not, i'm going to need to search more.

As more monthlies, there's the reapers game and esticle, but i don't know how constant those will be, even since I think Cat Fight who runs it MAY be in college. eh. i don't know.

The crew idea sounds great though, and going on here and talking to you guys really helps me the most though.

You think that's sad. With the exception of my crew leader, and my brother, whom I personally spent hours training in Melee and Brawl, there's no one in my school that can even take a two stocks off me in a 4 stock match if I'm playing serious.

Well, that's not true. The rest of my crew members can once in a while . . .

Fortunately, my crew leader and my brother can both defeat me about 33% of the time . . . unless I get into my super-perfect playing mode. Then I hear the Marth johns.

Smashboards really does do wonders for your skill. Get your friends on Smashboards.

Ahhh, I just got back from school/XC practice.

I wanted to tell people about Ken and survivor, but only 2 people knew who Ken was....

I wanted to tell people about what I learned and how cool smash is, but everyone plays call of duty 4....

People who do play smash seem to listen to me though, ask me questions, etc. It's kinda empowering.

School is no big if you do your homework right when you get it (I do).
The work isn't annoying and doesn't get in the way unless it's a project.
Half the stuff they give me is super easy, and can be done in 5 minutes or less.
Of course, it takes the rest of the class the ENTIRE 1 HOUR AND 45 MINUTES to go over it the next day.
What do I care, I draw.

Anyway, yeah, get homework out of the way, and then you're free when you get home (or in the dorm, whichever it may be).
I always have time to fight against Juniortoons, and it's SLOOOOOOWLY developing my game.

Call people up for a wifi match.
Sure, it has lag, but I don't notice and I play the exact same way on and off of wifi.

Find out if there's a weekend tourney.
I recently heard of a place that has 'pros' (I'll see about that) and from the sound of it they do NOTHING BUT play smash.
I would love to destroy them at their own game, so I'm going.
It shouldn't be too hard to find one if you're in a 'big' city.
But, if you're where I live.....

Short version: There's more time out there than you think, but it's your choice to do with it what you choose.

Really, unless you're a super genius/prodigy, the commitment time will heavily vary on what classes you take.

For example, I take gifted classes (I might take AP next semester) and the workload is 2-3 hours. With eating and a good nap, I have no time to play video games. It might take others less, but I may have ADD, and I'm not very bright at reciting facts to begin with (tell me something and I'll probably forget the next day, or 5 hours after you told me). Therefore I have to look through my notes like forever. Actually, I'm pretty sure I'm not all that bright period.

LOL, sometimes, I wonder if you really have self-esteem issues, or if you're just too funny. Take it from me Viet:

The metagame will probably slow down, but it doesn't mean it won't improve at all.
School isn't going to force us all to quit smashboards for the year.

Edit:
@ Ike Is Solid,
You're not the only one in grade 8 LOL :)

9th here =D
This is quite interesting.
I just don't see how they could give you enough work to keep you from doing anything at home, or why they would.
As for me, I remember things that I like REALLY need to.
Facts for a test (I can still remember that Nubia is south of Egypt, I dunno WHY I can), formulas, just random stuff.
It's kind of boring remembering everything.

But then again, I forget so much at home.
I'm puzzled.

I don't think the metagame will slow down if you still have those "I got my work done faster so I can play longer" people.
I don't think I'll be helping much, I found that my Ike is near unstoppable.
My Marth is quite situational.
I use Marth for light characters, and I let Ike take care of the heavier side of Brawl.
Lucas and Ness are my primaries.
If Lucas fails (which hardly happens in one on one), Ness goes up.
Ike follows up, and Marth comes after.
Wolf takes the place of Marth, and then it's Fox.
Falco is dead last, those bread jokes got me bored with Falco.
I like the stranger side of Brawl.

Anyways, study and get your work done.
It gives you more time to play, more time to rest, and gives you more time during class (I've got like FOREVER to draw in my classes; when they give us work, I'm usually done and drawing when it's time to move on).

PCHU, it seems your curriculum system is set up a lot differently than mine. We're probably in the ballpark in intellect, but...

it seems you're not challenged, and I'm constantly cornered by the hounds of communism high education.

It does seem that way, and you're right.
It IS different.
Don't quite know how, as I don't know how your system works.
Who knows, I might have easier work than you do.
9th grade is a lot easier than 8th, for some reason.
Of course, they haven't started putting down the hard stuff yet.

I'm not really challenged.
I mean, school is school, but the work could be a lot harder.
I found a calculus problem quite interesting, and I'm looking forward to learning it.
Meanwhile, I guess I'll learn whatever school throws at me.

The reason I say it's so easy is because my classmates are a little lacking in knowledge.
I had a junior, possibly senior ask me about scientific notation.....
You can plainly see that it's a problem.

Our intellect is most likely matched, but why limit ourselves to the ballpark?
Go for a homerun.
Shoot for the Moon.
The faster your learn, the more you can do, the more you can do, the less you have to work, the less you work, the more you can play, the more you can play, the better you get, the better your playstyle is, the more you win, and the more you win, my friend, the more MONEY YOU GET!
So, in a formula: You + Learning= MONEY

Good to see you back.

The tourney's are pretty much ended here also, as I had feared. Unless the Reapers Game decides to become more frequent.
