The word I'm thinking of in Sakurai's logic is relevancy. I made a note of this as each character had a link at the bottom of their character's section to a recent game.
Either the franchises have to be with recent games (the majority) or are "retro" (Mr. Game & Watch & Duck Hunt). What is baffling here is that Dark Dawn was released in 2010, a year after Punch-Out!! on the Wii, and the same year as Donkey Kong Country Returns, Xenoblade Chronicles (in Japan), and the infamous Metroid: Other M. One of these things is not like the others.
I can understand the concept of Golden Sun being relegated, but it does not fill me with confidence seeing a franchise's representation go backwards from having an Assist Trophy (but no other character trophies or stickers in spite of oodles of Golden Sun artwork while Mother 3 characters were nothing but sprites) to no AT in spite of a game being released in that time window. Plus, the first game was one of the most anticipated VC games, and still is selling well. This isn't an obscure title like Panel de Pon or Startropics; this was a relevant franchise that made a game company a good deal of money and helped popularize a beloved portable console. I know that sounds like being a homer, but there is some fact in what I just said.
Either Golden Sun is getting the royal shaft due to Monolith Soft being the new go-to RPG crew (since, unlike Camelot, they have the workforce and the budget for console games), or Sakurai is planning on using DLC to accomodate Golden Sun's representation. I'm not asking for 20 trophies and a bunch of stages, but at least focus on some core characters and share the same stage in both versions of the game.
This is exactly correct. Relevancy explains the other cut content... but not Golden Sun.
But the whole relevancy argument falls flat when you consider he plopped in the Dark Dawn Overworld theme on a KI stage just because it shares certain themes and Greekish setting with GS.
And if relevancy and if a franchise has a future or not is a thing with him why wasn't Lyn from FE replaced with a different Swordmaster esque character from Awakening?
Relevancy isn't the end-all factor. The point is, the franchises cut all-together are no longer relevant at all in any way, shape, or form. Golden Sun is still relevant, so its odd that there's no GS trophy, but there is music (even a new track, despite not being a remix).
Lyn is among the most recognizable FE characters to the western audience, as she's the very first character the west saw in the actual FE franchise, and Lyn is one of the main characters of that game. Even if she's not technically "the" main character, she's the de facto face of the game, and also made a prominent appearance in the Fire Emblem: Awakening DLC. In fact, she's the ONLY one of the Rekka No Ken Lords made available through DLC (the others are only available through Spotpass).
That's the thing. When it comes to "ease", Isaac is just as easy to import as any other AT. If not easier, since his is more simple than some.
This is honestly why I'm more inclined to believe he was cut because he was planned to be playable at one point. But obviously I don't know for sure, and I don't want to get my hopes up too much...
That is true, but on the other hand, it's easy to dump in an audio track, particularly an original audio track.
That part especially confuses me. There are plenty of other characters that can replace Lyn, yet they keep her. Meanwhile, Isaac's AT isn't too complicated (he just stands there and uses Move), yet he is removed.
In all honesty, I have zero clue where Golden Sun actually is in Nintendo's heirarchy. I'm just grasping at straws.
Replacing Lyn's AT with a newer FE character is pointless. Lyn is a much better character to represent the Swordmaster type of class, and they don't see a reason to cut her because she is a popular character and as a main Lord, she's much more important than a random Swordmaster you encounter in any single game. Even moreso that she's the first main Lord seen in the west, making her a very iconic character in the FE franchise overall.
