Is L-Canceling Even Necessary With Falco?

Let me say one thing: I LOVE SHFFL. It's just such a versatile technique and the characters that I use the most, Falco and Marth, both benefit greatly from it. However, with Falco, the L-Canceling bit... is it even necessary for him? I understand why it would be necessary for players like say, Link or even Marth, but Falco seems to have very little lag and without L-Canceling recovers fast enough to follow up with more SHFFL or ground attacks.

So overall, would you say that L-Canceling is a vital part to Falco and I am making a mistake by not using it much?

Bad lag is bad. He may not have that much lag, but he still has lag to be cancled. Even Pichu needs to L-cancel sometimes.

yes, you can't shffl with out the L

in even mid level play you will get punished hard for missing an l cancel with falco.

he's not a particular fast moving character so you need all the extra speed/manueverability you can get.

also combos...there are of course combos you can do without l canceling (utilt to whatever LOL) but it GREATLY limits your options

if you want to play a char without lcancelling and be successful play puff

It is vital for everychar, every move.

very very obvious reasons why to... less lag to get to your next option, and you can be punished a lot more if you don't

But good news, as time goes on, you wont even have to think about doing it.

I'm trying to think of a case that would make L-cancelling not strictly better than not doing it if you had the option to ... and I can't think of one ¬.¬

um... maybe if there were a move with a hitbox that was going to be above your head for at least some of the few frames saved by L-cancelling, remaining in your slightly more hunched down landing lag animation would save you?

but yeah. guys you dont need to explain this. l-cancelling makes you move faster. the faster you move the more stuff you can do. that is self-evidently good. if this guy doesnt understand that he probably never will.

I mean technically, you can play without it... Im sure we all have back in your early days of smash, its possible to play without it, but its just better to use it. I see no reason to not use it, its just better overall.

I think Kirby might have an extra hitbox from his non-Lcanceled drill (although it might just be in SSB64 haha)

Thats kinda cool... It would be pretty cool if you could eliminate all lag in melee too... It would be so fast then <_<

That would be a little silly
It only works in SSB64 because everyone is so floaty
If SSBM had that you'd like never be able to touch Fox <_<

Pretty sure hitboxes just stop as soon as you land, l-cancel or not.

Z Canceling is in 64. It eliminates all lag I think, instead of cutting it in half like in melee.
It's still L-Canceling. L-Canceling is short for Lag-Canceling, and isn't named based on the button input.

Afaik "lag cancel" is just a backronym. When people first started playing Melee, they were used to using their left index finger to "z-cancel," so it's only natural they'd call it l-cancel.

If it were short for lag cancel, I think they would have called it LC, like Float Cancel = FC, Jump Cancel = JC and possible other cancels that I can't think of right now.

still gotta l cancel. Most of the time you're approaching with shffl'd nairs/dairs, if you dont l cancel people will shield grab you all dai.

no i mean. your opponent had a hitbox that would hit you if you were standing up but not if you were crouching in your landing lag animation.

I've always felt Falco needs L-canceling more than most characters. Especially in the Marth and Sheik MUs, where you throw out an aerial only to be shielded and grabbed. Also, if you throw out an early Dair, even if it hits, it won't combo to anything without L-canceling. Pillaring and shine combos pretty much need L-canceling.

dude. every character needs to L-cancel every single aerial every single time they hit the ground and aren't auto-cancelling. end of discussion. learn your l-cancels.

Can someone please close this thread? I had the answer after the first few replies.

And FTR, I use L-Canceling very, very often with almost everyone. I usually do it with Falco, but noticed that when I missed the timing it didn't seem like it really lagged enough for it to even matter. I was wrong, and appreciate the responses.
