I'm sure everyone know about this already, but California is burning up. They say it's so bad that it's like Armageddon over there, and California don't have enough firefighters to even control the fire. What do you think about this situation? Do you think they can stop this fire eventually, if so, then how long do you think this fire will go on?

i actually haven't heard about this. i have seen really bad fires recently though, and i think it could be because the weather overall is becoming more and more dry, maybe thanks to global warming. as a country we should all start focusing more on the environment instead of things like the war and current politics situations.

I have a friend who lives over in California... I sure hope they do something about the fires soon, i'm beginning to get a little worried.

I think it's a news flash to read that California ISN'T on fire.
Sad but true.
The way this thing is going it'll be interesting to see if it can reach Katrina level damages. I'm thankful that I don't have family in Cali, I feel for you guys that do. I seems it's so bad that families are coming all the way here to Arizona just for shelter... Cali firefighters fail right now.

I agree with you that the environment is important, and that it's not being paid the attention it's due, but the other two issues you mentioned aren't unimportant either.

The war affects not only us, but millions of people living in Iraq. It's definitely something that people should be paying attention to.

As for politics, I don't really like it, but 'it's still very important. It's the system that we use to decide who's going to lead this country, and that's a pretty major decision.

I can understand where you're coming from, but I don't think you choose the best issues to illustrate your points.

I don't think that would be interesting so much as it would be horrifying.

While these fires are very bad, Wikipedia says only one person has been killed (and several other people, many of them firefighters, injured).

EDIT: I have been informed that someone's friend was told that another firefighter died. That makes me very sad.

While this may be extremely expensive, it doesn't seem to be that dangerous to human lives. I hope the death toll doesn't rise.

The picture on the left was taken 3 hours before the one on the right. Check out the smoke over the Pacific Ocean.

Also, would the thread creator mind changing the title to "Is anyone else seeing this?" Every time I read the current one, I cringe.

wow those pics are crazy

yeah i didn't mean to sound as if those issues werent important, i just meant that the kind of things our country leans to, and this world even, could be redirected to other things.

i mean, instead of fighting, would it be that hard if the world could commonly push their focus on things that would help all of us? instead of focusing on the things that help no-one?

We also have a serious situation over here in ATL as well, with this drought and everything. We are stocking up on as much water as possible so just in case it does run out then we'll have our own.

Yeah I agree with you, but I still don't understand why they are still in Iraq right now. Imo they should just leave them alone.

While I was in class about an hour ago I got a text from a friend that was watching the news. He said that a second firefighter died. I don't have any proof, but it's not hard to believe with the ways things are going.

Yeah I totally forgot about the drought. I think I heard somewhere they only have something like 90 days left of water. Crazy

I seriously almost cried when I read that. My eyes started watering up. I don't know why, but that happens to me sometimes.

Also, what happens if they run out of water? Would California buy expensive water from New York, for example, which has the Great Lakes? Would they be able to replenish their supplies with outside sources? Or would they have to evacuate the affected areas?

Two people have currently died and around 45 are injured. Over a hundred thousand have been evacuated, and at least 1,300 buildings (homes and businesses) have burned up.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21431682/ is a good read on it. Check out the slideshow picture on the right a little ways down

I don't think Cali is in a drought, I believe right now it's Georgia (Atlanta specifically if I remember correctly). But the plans I suppose would remain the same, try and get water from another state to try and last them until they get a storm that replenishes their supply. Or at least something like that.

If this dry spell keeps up, water's probably going to be rationed.

Keep in mind that it's already October, and up here in Northern California, we've gotten about 3 total days of rain so far; doesn't bode well for the near future.

I can't even remember the last time it rained good when I think about it. But it seems to be raining a little right now though, but that's about it

Yeah, and New Orleans shouldn't have been in the path of Katrina.

(that was sarcasm)

EDIT: ArtieBoy edited his post, so this doesn't really apply anymore

What exactly are you saying, Artieboy? Are you saying that animals belong in the area and humans dont so this is some sort of justice?

The Fire fighters have just declared that the fire is unstoppable, and that only nature can stop it. Over a million people have or will have to evacuate.

Wow, a million. Does anyone know if that's some kind of record?

Of those million people, what percentage will lose their homes in the fire? Or will only time tell?

This whole wildfire business has made me very sad.

For real. If it's been declared unstoppable, that means that a million could very likely increase if it keeps spreading like it has in the last couple days. Also is it worth it to call in volunteer firefighters if they can't do anything? It's very upsetting for sure, now it's just a cruel waiting game.

So Cali is burning, Georgia is in a drought, that Volcano in Ecuador is at a high level of activity, along with a bunch of others.... kinda makes you wonder huh? :(

The fire isn't even the half of it.

Ironically our weather is very windy over here, so the fire is getting even more fueled and the ashes and smoke is being spread throughout the air. Our PE teachers were directed to host their classes in the gym until further notice.

Yeah, things are getting bad.
Hopefully they'll stop that fire soon! ;)

Woaw crap! That's buring like a couple of 30 miles of two cities I used to live. Ya, it's pretty horrible (though I live like 400 miles away from those fires), and hopefully they get put out soon. If you ask me, there should be more firemen moved from their stations up here to help down there, but enough to remain up here in case of a big, bad fire.

And the wind there...I can just imagine. Up here the winds got over 30 mph earlier today, and along with all the tree and natural buildup, it looks like it won't be good. Plus it's going to go by many minor cities, and this fire is not backing down. Pretty incredible, in a scary sort of way. This could be a big issue for Governor Schwartezenhagger (I probably spelled that wrong) and President Bush to clean up, but hopefully they get right on it. Hopefully it isn't as bad as New Orleans, in terms of time needed for recovery. Which seems likely it won't in my opinion. Luckily, it isn't windy anymore, and most the fire growth is done with. It's probably going to spread next, and then die down.

Fires can be pretty scary, to say the least. We had one down here get withing like 50 feet of our next door neighbors house. Then the next day, same place, but the housing track next to us almost got burned=it only got to the wall of a neighbor, thankfully (only wood damage, and nothing else to all our houses...thank God for no casualties, or major loses/lives taken). So I know that sort of stuff can be pretty scary, to say the least. NOt neccissarily easy to deal with, either. :urg:

You know what? How did that fire even start in the first place? And when it did start how did they let it get out of hand like that?

It's not one fire, it's over 16 fires in a close proximity to each other. The main reason is the drought in Southern California, along with the usually strong Satan Ana winds. The fires themselves started from several reasons, from knocked down power lines, to an overturned semi, to arson. The others aren't known at the time.

Winds aren't suppose to improve until tomorrow. Which means more people will probably have to be evacuated today and tonight. I've heard 6 people are now dead, though I don't have a news source to prove it, so I might be wrong

Wow.

After reading this thread I feel very special for people on smashboards that actually care about what's happening here in CA.

Well you ask, how bad it is? I can tell you its bad as hell. I have a few friends that attend to UCSD and they were evacuated back to their home because the air was THAT bad. School was cancelled for one week, and maybe even two weeks.

Breathing that air and seeing the sky all red is not fun at all. It feels like its the end of the world. I mean, just watch: http://youtube.com/watch?v=modEQSy4_8A

But yeah. I'm happy that we have a thread like this here on smashboards. Am proud of us Smashers.
