On some of the tech sites I frequent I have seen this question being ask again and again.
And I would like to know the thoughts of the members on this site.

What do you think of the effects of the technological revolution(web 2.0, Gadgets, the Internet,Social sites, etc) on things like communication, Attention spans, friendships, and etc. Do you think they totally destroy are communication skills and leave us all hyper. Or do you think as long as you can separate life and the Internet your okay.

Anyway, I think more advanced technology allows for greater communication. How else could I talk to you like this? I think it also has potential for personal communication, but it all boils down to knowing when to get off your *** and actually speak to someone.

It's another thing that lets people potentially become obsessive and greedy over. In moderation, it's clearly done a lot of good. Much easier to reference resources, keep in touch, pass time, find hobbies, etc., but like anything, people tend to become too attached. I've had a lot of friends seclude themselves in their rooms over MMOs and whatnot.

I think as long as the person doesn't let it consume them, it's a very necessary tool for nearly anything, including communication.

But how about the fact some people use the internet and texting as replacements for vocal conversation. |
Don't you think this might have a negative effect in the future. Even if you can control your self very well you might catch your self saying something like "ftw I finish the paper".

Anything that people become obsessed with can be harmful. The internet, and everything that implies, is VERY easy to become obsessed with. I think our culture requires us to use the computer at least a little bit. But people know when they are on it too much.

Internet doesn't destroy communication, but regarding children, it teaches different methods of communication, like showing no emotion. If I get in a heated debate with Yuna and he destroys my *** in one of his gigantic, soul crushing rebuttals, I can still read his post thoroughly and make a dignified post. Were this in real life, however, I'd probably get really discouraged from that

Seriously, the internet can be used for pretty much anything. It can be a tool for communicating of long distance via E-mail, IM, or an internet forum/blog such as this one, a means of staying aware of whats going on the world, simple easy access entertainment, or a way to get a little extra help for school. Of course, it can also be used to spread completely idiotic rumors, be a place to hide from real problems, or a way for pedobear to find his next victim.

Really, it just comes down to self moderation and using the internet smartly. For some people it really does get to the point where there obsession with the internet and gadgets and stuff really is interfering with their real world relationships (or else, they no longer have any). As far as I know, most people use the internet in moderation, so there shouldn't be any major societal problems.

Internet is ace! I can keep in contact with a couple of friends from school through email. I msn my good friends from school and still talk for a couple of hours every now and then. I like browsing forums while doing other things like work or listening to music or talking to people online. My grandparents live on the other side of the world so it's nice to get a few emails from them too. I don't love facebook like other people but it's good enough. I only see some people once a week, so facebook gives me a simple way to message them if I change plans. And it's the best way to speak to my sister.

Internet is also amazing for work. I can do 90% of my degree on a computer + friends. Last year I had to go without internet for a good 2 months. That was really hard.

There are downsides though. Like MySpace pages' terrible music + clashing ugly God-forsaken colours that people choose. Or the first time I talked to my mum on MSN at uni. She used more txt language, smilies and horrible grammar than I could understand. She is now blocked :urg:

The internet is filled with the most vile and deplorable things.

Shock sites, mass distributed child pornography. As with every revolution, it's a double edged sword. With something that has so many incredible applications, you can always trust people to find the worst possible uses for it.

Still, there's no denying that the internet is a fantastic technological feat, and it can bring people together as well as isolate them. One of my best friends left the country a few years ago, and the internet has allowed us to still keep in regular contact and hang out whenever we can arrange to during holiday seasons.

So yeah, the internet is a thing to love and hate at the same time, it's a just a tool with endless possibilities, and not all people are affected by that pesky thing called morality.

Teran17 said everything I was already going to say.
Now I have nothing more to say.

Actually, I do. I'm under the suspicion that the internet is slowly turning the vast majority of people into idiots. But this could also just mean lots of people are stupid in the first place, they just have a place to express themselves now.
I'm going to go with B.

The internet is very addicting like any other addicting thing, but with every good thing comes a bad thing. So I just think about that and I say to myself, "What are the side effects of using this copmuter to long."
I look at my eyes and everthting and I tell you what almost everything was wrong. My eyes were red, I could see right, I could barly get off my chair, etc. So yea I just think of these things and im off the computer and on the way to video games.

The internet is what separates us from our grandparents, and I never want to go back.

The internet is expanding human communications, just as long as we as a human race decide to evolve alongside it, rather than let it turn us into meaningless drones.
