I just had this interesting idea. What would happen if Nintendo never told us what Brawl's release date was, and instead released it without warning?

Pros:
  • Fans will be totally shocked and in awe about how Nintendo could possibly hide the date from everyone
  • There won't be a sidewalk-busting lineup epidemic at midnight
  • No one could complain about delays
  • You would see far less reports and topics about people somehow getting early copies and proceeding to tell us a bunch of fake crap
Cons:
  • If even one source gets out, the whole plan is ruined
  • Nintendo may want to have launch parties
  • People will suspect that the game will never be completed
Neutrals:
  • The "hype chart" would be different: instead of a gradual rise to a peak on launch day and then falling down, there would be a huge spike on launch day and fall pretty slowly
Now, I know full well that this would never happen. But if it did, what would you think of it?

i think that idea will **** up the pre-ordering business!.

Companies would gangbang nintendo like no tomorrow and in the end they wil abort the idea.

Think of ten more pros and cons.

Chances are, it'll be 100 times easier to think of more cons than pros.

Not only is Xsyven completely right,

-Nintendo doesn't care about the pros you listed, they care about money.
-It's not hype anymore once the game is out
-That plan could never happen. Are you saying that the 200,000 some videogame retailers in the world would ALL stay quiet about it? Because they would know beforehand, because they need to SHIP and BUY them.

Not to mention that hospitals will be overloaded when millions of people suddenly run out of their houses and into each other.

"Day of Release"
We all wake up and check out SmashBros.com (let's pretend we don't stay up until late at night, for Americans anyway, and check the site) and find out Sakurai said it's being released today! We rush down to the stores and all buy copies. We then rush home and open the cases only to find a sticky note in each case saying "Mind games'd j00! ~Sakurai".

If this happened insane people would bring their supplies and camp outside of stores for months on end, only to find out that the game will now only be available to purchase online.

I have also been thinking this. It would be Lol. Or if Sakurai says "It was released yesterday."(but it didn't)
Everyone will run into stores only to be pissed off as Sakurai laughs at them.

The surpise aspect would be fun and in optimism it could release as early as tommorow, but the hype would be dead because no one knows for sure when it will come out. Also, less people will be prepared to afford SSBB if there isn't a announced release date.

I could see something more like "It releases in one week" or "one month" more so than no release date.

Plus- Nintendo could make this happen. Give their representatives many different dates so game employees tell people that it's going to happen on this date but never officially release anything.

My cousin had an EB employee tell him they were releasing huge info...that was a month ago...they also said it was going to come out in June or July...

Even if employees say it- doesn't mean people will believe it. And then say if someone in one area says "it'll come out on June 15" another person will come out and say "no- I've had someone tell me August 4th" and someone else saying "September 19" and so on and so forth until there is no single date. So it's not impossible to accomplish, but it will be improbable.

You're all n00bs.

Publishers keep high profile release dates silent so other companies don't match their products against it. Nintendo wants to ensure that you come to the store and leave with their game rather than another you've been waiting for.

It has nothing to do with the fans and everything to do with business politics/policy.

I think it would be hilarious to walk into a game store and see a box that said "Playstation 4" and have it be completely serious. They should no longer announce console releases, that way we won't have huge lines and people getting shot etc.

Do you people know what hype is actually for? Its for SALES. If they release it tomorow out of nowhere they will sell alot because of the many people waiting for the game. But they hype it up with the website and E3 so more and more people will want it over time. Than they say the release date 1 or 2 months before it is released and BAM they sell like crazy

Just to clear up the whole "hype" thing:
Wikipedia said:
Hype is closely tied with enthusiasm, but implies communication: Hype is intended to induce enthusiasm in recipients. Hype can induce desire, motive, interest, energy. Unwanted hype has negatively effects recipients, who will likely resist the hype, and may seek to undermine it. Or, if the person agrees with the hype, the person may hype it themselves. As an innovation becomes popular, it works through clusters of people, and resembles an excitation network.
So according to this, hype isn't just about wanting something, it's also about being excited in general.

Not much point in this thread anymore, with the release date released and everything...
