Two opposite sides of a normal dice add up to 7.
O_o Not following.

Oh, hi. You're probably wondering who I am.

I stumbled upon this topic not to long ago. I read all the way up to page 18, and got tired of reading, because I wanted to post something. ^ ^

Anyway, I couple things I picked out along the way...

Proof? I fail to believe that. If it was Pearl Harbor, I might understand. But not 9/11
Just wanted to say, the date was December 7th. I can't remember the year, but the date has stuck with more some reason.

Murphy's Law is that the worst thing that can happen WILL happen.
It also applies to my roommate, Kevin Murphy. His nickname is also , and he h ates you. ;) j/k. ((I try to add some humor to somethings. >_>))

FACT: Nintendo has been around since the late 19th century. It originated as a company that made playing cards.
They were called Hanafuda cards. The company was founded on September 23, 1889 in Kyoto.

Links (sorry for wikipedia, but it's all I have access to right now. :( ):

Fact: The Komodo Dragon has a posionous bite.
Already covered, but interesting fact: If a human doesn't brush their teeth between 3-7 days, their mouth will develop the same type of bacteria (not recommended, and I can't find my original source).

FACT: There are more bacteria in your colon than humans on earth.
Gross. :(

FACT: The loudest burp by a human was 104.9 decibels, about as loud as an airplane during take-off.
One of the several, 'How do they measure THAT?', questions.

FACT: A polar bear has black skin. Its fur is actually made of transparent bristles; it appears white due to reflected sunlight.
I've actually known about this. Kudos for posting that.

A couple random blurbs from me:

Fact: Einstein's last words were in German, but the nurse taking care of him didn't understand what he said (a shame :().

Fact: There are only two poisonous lizards in the world. The Gila Monster, and Mexican Beaded Lizard. Both live in the same climate.

Fact: Your car consumes more gas everytime you start the vehicle, then if you let the car idle.

Fact: Male seahorses actually care for the babies, carrying them in the birth cycle rather than the female.

Sure the make is a factor. It takes more power(thus more gas?) to start a truck than an economy car, no? Or a hummer than a honda?
Further testing is needed!

Hello ODIN

This one's true

Fact?: There is a species of clam that can grow up to four feet long and weigh up to 500 pounds.

Fact?: In Athens, Greece, a driver's license can be taken away by law if the driver is deemed either unbathed or poorly dressed.

Fact?:One punishment for an adulterous wife in medieval France was to make her chase a chicken through town naked.

I see what you're saying, but wouldn't that be true across all cars then?

If it requires more gas to start a truck, even in comparision to starting a honda, would the rate at which they burn gas in a five minute period still be less than the amount of gas needed to start any vehicle?

Or am I misinterpreting something. -_- Help me out Peeze! :)

I'm not an expert on cars, so I'm not completely sure, but usually the bigger the car the more gas it burns. Driving ,yes smaller cars burn less. But idle i have no idea how cars burn. But cars actually burn more gas idle than moving( the reason why cars makers say their car gets _ _miles per gallon highway and less mpg city).

I'll need a car savvy person to help clear this up, but the reason a car burns more gas moving, is because the gas pedal is pumping gas into the engine chamber, thus burning gas to get a reaction, in this case, more power/torque to get the car moving.

Idling doesn't cause a rapid intake of gas, and thus (in theory) would explain why starting the car would burn more fuel (opening up the gas lines).

I think that's how it's done/works. I'll need someone to back up my statement (or completely debunk it) please. :)

No i take that back. City driving is not just idling, but driving, making frequent stops, and driving again. It DOES take more gas driving than idle. I'm done...and confused.

False. There's better than a 1 in 2 chance that they share the same birth month, not day.
I think it is birth day...

Odds of no one sharing a birthday with anyone:
364/365 * 363/365 * 362/365 . . . 343/365 = .4927

Odds of at least 1 person sharing a birthday:
1 - .4927 = .5073
OR
50.73%

So, in a group of 23 people, odds are at least two people share a birthday.

(AltF4 Posting):

AGenie is right about the birthday thing. When 23 people are gathered together, chances are that at least two people will have the same birthday. It's really cool. If you were to have 27 people, the odds rise to 80%. Obviously you have to have 366 people to have a 100% chance. (ie: The Pigeon Hole principle)

This strange mathematical principle is the basis behind a particular kind of hacking attack called (you guessed it) the "Birthday Attack". You can have a high probability of having a hash collision by trying only a very small proportion of potential combinations.

Pretty sure those are true.

"A male baboon can kill a leopard."

"Cats cannot taste sweet things."

"The sting from a killer bee contains less venom than the sting from a regular bee." (huh?)
I dont know if it true or not, but it makes sense. A killer bee needs less venom for the effect to happen while a normal bee needs more of it.

Well, that could be true. Killer bees are named for how ferociously they attack.

Fact: Komodo dragons kill most their prey by biting it. Their mouths are so filthy and full of bacteria that what they bite runs off and dies from infection.

Fact: Cats are more likely to be able to survive a fall from 100 ft compared to, say, 20 ft. This is because cats don't have a fatal terminal velocity, so more time in the air allows them to have more time to right themselves and brace for their fall.

False. Just False. Cat's cannot survive being dropped out of a plain. The brain of a cat only needs to experience 15 Gs to experience massive head trama.

A plane, perhaps, but they could survive a 100+ foot drop. I didn't believe it either, at first, until I looked it up. Their *terminal velocity* is non-fatal. Terminal velocity is the fastest something can fall. If something's terminal velocity is, say, 130 mph(average human's), it means it can not fall faster than that without some other force being involved.

It's not 100%, because obviously it would be ridiculous to test this theory. They don't always survive, but they can, which is what I said. I also didn't say they were uninjured.

Bah, sorry for the double post. It won't let me edit:

What's more, Gs are due to accelerating, if you've reached terminal velocity (which won't kill the cat) then you aren't accelerating nor experiencing Gs.

Okay, I just read about the coolest animal ever on Wikipedia.

The pistol shrimp, also called the snapping shrimp, has one large claw that it c0cks like a pistol, then fires, sending out a 190 decibel shock wave. This shock wave is used to stun or kill small fish. It kills stuff by snapping its claw at it (no contact)! How insane is that?

Also, the shock wave creates a bubble which implodes and reaches the temperature of the sun's surface, emitting light. They have a name for the light: shrimpoluminescence.

Awesomest animal ever.

EDIT: had to respell "c0cks" in the second sentence...

Well G's aren't so much an issue when it's speeding up. The G's count when it slows from terminal velocity to rest in a fraction of a second. Thats where the -9.8 m/s^2 comes into play, it accelerates in the negative direction.

I thought it was, the claw produced bubbles that collapsed instantaneously which produced temperatures hotter than that of the sun.. Or w/e. That's what animal planet told me.

I'm going to edit this with specifics, but there is a breed of tarantula that uses in rear legs to pull off its follicles to unleash an irritating spore to scare off or even stun would be attackers. Stun spore anyone?

Um, it's really not hard to think of Pokemon moves that animals can do. I mean, Pokemon practically are animals...

Snakes constrict, birds peck, cats scratch, etc. We need to get creative, like WGWOLVERINE.

Is the pistol shrimp the only animal that uses shock wave?

Yeah, I don't really know a lot about physics(it's been two years since I took a class). My friend just told me that part.

Underwater creatures are awesome. Some coral(can't remember the exact species)can digest other nearby corals by expelling its guts onto them. It basically digests them. This is how -some- white coral is created. It's a crazy thing to see.
