Seriously the fact that there's no Square characters and the fact that the only Nintendo character they showed was DK, who was pretty much taken under Rareware's wing, means this shouldn't be taken seriously.

Sonic, Pac-Man, DK, and Lara are actually UNDERRATED, Master Chief shouldn't be that high, and how many people ACTUALLY know the others?

Is this the end of proper gaming journalism? Not even using logic or looking at facts?

This. When I read that title of this thread, Sephiroth was the only character that immediately came to mind.

Pac-Man is hardly even a character. Overrated? What cult of Pac-Man fanboys have I been ignoring all this time?

Now Pit is overrated. He hasn't been in a game since the NES; and yet, everyone wants a new Kid Icarus because he was in Brawl.

The only one I'd even slightly agree with is Master Chief. Most of the others... I have no idea where they're getting "overrated" from. Lara Croft? Really, when's the last time people were overly hyped about Lara Croft, besides the general excitement whenever a new game comes out? Same about Fenix.

Sonic's (but, even more so, Shadow) overrated by a section of his fans, and severely underrated by virtually everyone else. So...yeah...

And I had no idea Donkey Kong was the most overrated Nintendo character. Especially since you rarely see anyone talking about him (which is a shame, since he's the man... er, ape. Irony!).

WHAT! The Big Daddy isn't overrated at all, the only video game characters people talk in school about is COD4 soldiers, and all that main stream ****. I guess these guys based their information off of other video game reviews sites, because no one in my school knows what a big daddy is, except a few. Pac-Man and DK don't belong there was well.

Ok, most important thing about this article is that it's based on a reader's poll. People voted, so that's where they got the characters. I think a lot of the characters on there just got voted for since they haven't had great games in a while (DK, Sonic, Pac-Man, Lara Croft). And most of the rest are from games that many people think are overrated (Halo, Assassin's Creed, Bioshock, Gears of War) The others, I dunno at all, really.

I'd say Link and Mario were overrated, but they are still just as awesome as they were twenty years ago, if not more so.

Of course, Mario's a dork and Link's a mute, so as characters go...

And Sephiroth is so overrated that he would never appear on a poll about overrated characters. There are too many people that overrate him for him to ever score enough votes.

Incidently, Neko Bellic is really, really overrated. Or at least GTA4 is. GTA4 was NOT the best videogame of all time, and should not be in second place for Metacritic's highest rated games of all time (First place is OoT).

They can't control the intelligence of the people who vote in their polls.

The game is well deserving of the praise it receives.

I laughed at Big Daddy, which probably can't be named outside of gaming circles, and Kratos, who isn't even mentioned unless a God of War game is coming out.

Also, Chris Redfield? He was in two or three games. How can you really call him over-rated in an already over-rated series with characters like Jill Valentine.

This. It's a really logic impaired, intrinsically contradictory idea to have a poll about who's the most overrated.

Also, trying to write an article based on the results of a reader's poll is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard. Was the writer just too timid to bash some of the readers' beloved characters without their permission?

The game is well deserving of the praise it receives.

True, Grand Theft Auto IV is amazingly detailed and deserve critical acclaim, but it just wasn't fun.

You can have the deepest social commentary in the world, but if the message is conveyed in a manner that's wrong for the medium, it just doesn't quite work.

The problem I have with GTA IV is that it is the only GTA I've played that I couldn't finish - and I've played GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas, and Liberty City Stories. I blame the annoying emphasis on building friendships, online dating, and the other social aspects - you had to build and maintain friendships to get certain rewards, so I focused on the social elements too much, got really bored and annoyed at them. I ended up never finishing because the game was too boring.

What's weird about me though is I still feel GTA Vice City is the best game in the series. I stopped caring significantly about graphical improvements around the time it came out, as 3D finally became "good enough" in my opinion. So basically, I liked it because it had all the useful things like maps, radar, and lock-on, in addition to things that were eliminated in future installments in the series, as well as the fact that GTA Vice City didn't have all the annoying elements of a life simulator. There was no emphasis on staying healthy or going on dates, while around mid-way through the game, it featured the most open-world of any GTA. You could run any buisness you purchased, became a mafia lord, and were not limited to weaving through a fixed story, but rather could choose to play through whichever snipit of satirical commentary was most interesting to you.

Compared to the freedom of Vice City, GTA IV felt like a life simulator.

The problem with making a poll of the most overrated characters is that the reason the characters are overrated in the first place is the legion of fanboys that back them up. Every one of these fans will tell you their character/series deserves all the credit it recieves, and to be overrated, you would have to prove this fandom wrong. Which is difficult, because often the series do deserve a lot of praise, just not as much as they get.

Personally, I think the cake is the most overrated character ever. I'm pretty sure it's a lie.

I think these characters are all slightly overrated, especially master chief and sonic. Donkey Kong is overrated in the same way that sonic is: big reputation with not a lot of recent big games. Big Daddy came as a surprise to me, I rarely even hear talk of Bioshock lately. I was shocked that a character like Shadow wasn't up there, especially since the only game he legitimately starred in was an abject failure.
