How to win at Rock Paper Scissors

With the SBR recommended rule set now released, we are going to see a greater standardization in the large and recognized tourneys rules. And if you are willing to abuse the new standard for having the edge in battle, know that you have the right to claim the lower controller port by challenging your opponent to a game of Rock Paper Scissor. Here are some tips chosen by Kent (from the Wired magazine) from The Official Rock Paper Scissors Strategy Guide:

1. Play paper first. Rookies tend to lead with rock, so paper is the safest opener. (A savvy opponent will try the same, causing a tie.) If you win, claim victory; if not, start the next throw right away, because of course it's two out of three;

2. Exploit copycats. Casual players often switch to the object that just beat them. You can encourage them to do this by shouting, "Paper wins!" when you defeat their rock. Then throw scissors on the next round;

3. Watch for doubles. People rarely throw the same hand three times in a row; if they play scissors twice, your next move is paper. Also, keep up the pace so they have less time to think and instead fall into patterns.

Now you are ready to claim the most insignificant advantage in battle that is rightfully yours.

I read about a big RPS tournament (yes they really have those) and everyone came in with their crazy strategies and mindgames, but you know who won? The girl who always picked randomly based on something outside either players' control. That means every single strategy invented for rock-paper-scissors is a losing one, and random chance wins (talk about a competitive game).

I know it's over but if EVO were going to happen again with the same ruleset would you rather go to that or a rock paper scissors tournament?

I would go to an EXTREME ROCK PAPER SCISSORS tournament.

That is, (GO WATCH KAIJI, NEWBS), each player gets 12? cards, 4 of each (Rock, Paper, Scissors), and plays matches against people and have a 'life bar' of 3 points which they bet in matches.

When a card is used, it's removed from the players hand forever.

Epic mindgames ensue.

Well, yes. the most basic game-theoretical analysis of the game reveals the dominant strategy to be one that uses Rock, Paper, and Scissors randomly with equal probability for each.

I always thought that Rock Paper Scissors tournaments consisted on who could change their throw mid-hand into whatever their opponent threw.

Most people I've played RPS with pick scissors first, because scissors is the last thing in their mind before they throw.

Actually, going three in a row usually works. The tourneys I go to use rock paper scissors to choose first pick in stage strike.

I usually go for 3 scissors, first time they either throw rock and win and get all cocky, or they lose and get defensive. Second they throw the opposite of what they threw before 90% of the time. So you end up with a win and a loss most of the time. You can usually get them again with the third one because they NEVER expect three in a row to be the same, but if you think the have expirience with RPs then you want to throw paper on your last, if they're new, throw another scissors.

The only smasher I lost to using this strategy was samuraipanda, and he's a neuro behavioral scientist so he's supposed to study how the brain affects behavior, so it's no fair :(

HUGE NOTE MASSIVELY IMPORTANT: If you ever play Overswarm in RPS, here's what he'll do:
OS: "on shoot?"
You: "sure"
OS: "shoot." (while you are saying "1,2,3")
He shows scissors and since it's normal to count 1,2,3 on your hand with a rock he throw paper and wins. You just have to counteract this by going shoot on the first one and choose scissors.

Which means OP is wrong.

Rock all the way.

But back on topic. What does it matter who starts the stage striking/ banning ? I always ban the same stage, and strike the same ones :)

Nothing beats rock. If they say paper beats rock simply punch them in the face with your rock and ask why their paper didn't magically defend them by covering the rock. That's what I do...or at least what I should.

Also I don't see how paper beats rock, couldn't the rock just crumple and trample the paper?

How did she choose randomly? Are random-output devices allowed? NOTE: the human mind is incapable of random output.

This thread fails.
Always go rock. Rock has many last second mindgames you can legitimately pull, that you can sneakily counter anything. since your hand starts in a rock position, it is most advantageous to keep your hand in said position until the last possible second. it is not always guaranteed, but if you have enough tech skill, you can quickly change your hand at the last second to tie, or counter your opponent. Paper comes out of rock easier, so it is likely suggested to go paper, even in the event of a tie. Otherwise, continue going Rock, and smash their scissors, or lose to a quickly drawn paper, BUT, you should know that you still have an advantage using this method, rather than just throwing whatever out, whenever.
Using this strategy, we can clearly create a tier list of Rock Paper Scissors.
TOP:
Rock

It is clear, that playing rock can start you out with more options of countering than any other hand position. not to mention, Rock already couinter scissors, and can mindgame paper out of doinganything useful.

MID:
Paper

While nothing has the potential of Rock, Paper can counter a clumsily played Rock. if the rock screws up, and misses your move of paper, you will be the victor.

BOTTOM:
Scissors

Rock crushes Scissors without any real trying needed. even though, you have to give it some merrit for being able to sometimes catch a good rock offguard by thinking you were going to go paper, but quickly splitting your fingers into scissors to slice his paper he tried to tie with.

...yeah, I went there.

As a game RCS is good but only two out of three ways. Rock beats scissors the scissors are bent you can't use them any more. Scissors cuts paper, what am I suppose to do with this it's just strips. Paper covers rock, there's no structural damage to rock, rock is fine. I think it should be Rock, Paper, Dynamite with a cut able fuse.

I'd like to thank Demetri Martin for the joke.

I just won $90 playing RPS.

I did $5 2/3s with this compulsive gambler, got him to $40 without losing one, then played a $10 hand and lost, then did another and got back to $40. We then did a $20 hand, which I won, then ANOTHER $20 hand which put me at $80. He then wanted to do an $80 hand, but I refused so we did another $10, and I won then he quit >_>.

****ing read him like a book :).

How to beat any RPS "champion":

Choose your throws randomly.

Now you have a 50/50 chance of winning and losing, no matter who you're playing against and no matter what "strategies" they try to use. None of it matters. You'll have a 50% chance of winning.

To help you, you might have a computer give you pre-chosen throws. Then just memorize them. Or you could have a printout or something, but obviously you run the risk of other people seeing it.

Unless you actually do that though (print a sheet) you never choose 100% randomly. People can be read.
