For the longest time, i have always said it as Me-Lee but back in day, every tournament i ever been to was always saying May-lay so i was like wtf. How do you say it exactly? Because it looks like me ****ing lee to me cuz i dont see no A's in Melee.

***Correct way***

Americans: Me Lee
Canadians: Me Lay
British: Ma Lay
Asian: Me Lay
German: Me Lee
Mexican: Ma lay

It doesn't matter.
Meh lee,
May lay,
Mee lee...

I've even heard muh lay, stress on last syllable.

As long as they know what you're talking about it doesn't matter.

For like the first 5 years I had the game, I always said mee-lee

But after I got advanced, everyone was like "may-lay" and I was like wtf???

Eventually I just started saying may-lay to fit in, and now I always say may-lay. It doesn't look like it should be pronounced like that at all =/

And just like Zodiac, it sounds like the anouncer says mee-lee. But... I say may-lay now just because that's how everyone else says it lol.

Melee is a French-derived word meaning the same thing we use it for in english. The french spelling is mêlée. It's a conjugation from the verb mêler, which means to mix, blend, or combine.

The accent (the little slashes above the e's) change the pronunciation in french. If an E has no accent over it, you pronounce it almost like you would in english. However, if it has an accent over it the E is always pronounced like "ay" as in May-lay.

mêlée ---------> melee

When the word was converted to English, it lost the accents because those don't exist in the English language. However, words taken from another language are generally expected to be pronounced somewhat like they were in the mother language. Therefore.... may-lay is the most Frenchish way I've heard it pronounced, although the correct way is possibly closer to meh-lay.

*the accent is only over the second-from-last E. I'm certain the closest to the correct way to say it would be something like meh-lay, however I'm no expert in French. I only took it for a few years

Between my roommate and I, we sometimes say "mealy" because that's what my brother says and I joked about it one day and it kinda stuck ~_~
May-lay in public though :lick:

As someone who speaks proper English, being from England, I know that the proper pronounciation is "meh-lay". Good day to you all.

I never understood why people think the announcer says "mee-lee". I've always known the word to be pronounced "may-lay" and that's the way I hear the announcer say it as well. :dizzy:
