nope, ive never been to cali.

but i def loved mango, lovage, and zhu. i've always been a big fan of hugs. SS is norcal, but i really like him. im talkin to connor the kid on aim, and he's fawkin awesome. I LOVE FESTEZZIO, lol. I like atlus just cuz ive watched a bunch of his montage videos and they are cool. lots of socal seems really fun to be around IRL, you guys are like a big happy smash family. you guys enjoy melee a whole lot, you seem like a big fun loving group of kids.

Its too bad kouryuu and P make the rest of you look like jerks, its pretty inaccurate. its a good think mango and lovage were so much fun to play with when they came, it offset my negative feelings towards socal

Jfox, you make me LOL.

Don't try too hard to be liked. It doesn't say much for your personality.

lol "bitter negativity." No, I'm actually the furthest thing from being bitter but how would you know that right?

You think my online persona defines who I am. Only a person without a stable social life would make such assumptions. You have my sympathy. Now go ahead and ignore me.

lmao @ dantefox

Anyway I found the most efficient and effective way to improve BY FAR

Step 1: Watch a ****load of videos, preferably all the same matchup.
Step 2: Play someone in that same matchup asap.
Step 3: If you're fortunate enough, play the matchup against as many different styles as possible.

You have to watch someone good, and you have to play someone good. If not, the results will be diluted slightly, but you could've figured that out on your own (hopefully).

Also extensively analyze the videos, don't just view them. I watched M2K's Sheik vs PC's Fox in three different matches at least 4 times each, not including the times I replayed various 2-10 second clips over and over to figure out exactly what they did, how they did it, and what they tried to counter (why did they do that maneuver?). It's not always easy to be able to tell someone's mindset through a video, sometimes it can take a little while before you know the answer to all three questions.

Oh yeah also- I don't know about the rest of you, but when I watch matches I oftentimes only follow one person at a time. That's bad, I should watch everyone (especially during my own matches, need more awareness), but if that does happen, then go back and watch the match from the other person's perspective only. You can see who's nervous, who's playing cautiously, who's controlling the match, who's ****ing up, etc.

Oh one more thing. Make a list of what tactics you want to employ in your own game (if you're analyzing correctly there should be very specific instances you want to test/master/practice). And the sooner you play someone, the better your results will be.

Yeah, this method works wonders.

this way sounds lame and not worth trying

How about just trying to figure out what u can do on your own? and have a gorilla pimp tell u waht u need to add to ur game...

Though I have infinitely more respect for those who figure stuff out by themselves and create their own unique style, it is not possible for everyone by any means.

For those who are less talented, my method is much more useful. Also a gorilla pimp is only human, and only one human, and is therefore subject to slight biases and err. Also he may not be able to adapt his advice to your specific style of play. In your case it is working, but I guarantee not everyone is able to translate his advice to their play as well as yourself. And of course, not everyone has access to his insight the same way you do.

Many people DO try to figure stuff out on their own, but despite their efforts they remain noobs for a long period of time, only ever getting better by minimal increments. That's what my advice is for.

As for not worth trying- Well, all I can say is if you want to get better, you'll give everything a chance. There's no risk of loss involved, there's no reason not to try it unless you think that "trying to figure out what u can do on your own" is the undisputed, absolute best way to improve and that nothing else could come nearly as close, which in my eyes, is quite pretentious and narrow-minded.

Oh and if you get good at analyzing videos, you can be your own gorilla pimp, and talk to other egoclappers or celphs or goon squads and discuss theory to get even better.

kira you be trying too hard

and style of play is just a big john. there are two styles of play: aggressive and defensive. if you're defensive, you're bad. so there is really one style of play you want to aim for.

that's a gross oversimplification of playstyle.
not at all

you probably haven't realized it because you're bad (and i don't say that to be mean, i say that because it's true; thinking the game is more complex than it is is why most people never get good), but melee is really simple.

Could very well be...
Hmmm maybe you're right. Maybe I just need to be more aggressive to get good.

Bad players playing defensive is bad. Being aggressive is how you get better.

When you reach the level of M2K and actually KNOW how to camp/play defensive, then it's okay to do so.

very accurate statement. during play i overthink instead of do, watching my opponent. i'm trying to change that.

For the most part about styles it really doesn’t exist in a truly competitive setting especially for smash. With smash I think it just learning how to playing off mistake and a lot of improvising in matches. It kind of like improv piano you need to learn a lot about the theories and how to perform them so then the rest just become an art at that point.

and yeah ive played you me n my partner went 2 0 against you and yours in friendlies...
