Everyone has a different way they got involved in smash. Some people do it by their selves and other have help and encouragement from friends.

The way I got involved was in 7th-8th grade I would to my friend's house every day(EVERY day) and I would just play classic mode, adventure mode, and sometimes play against him.

Then later in 8th grade I had a math class with rudeezy, whom I had never met before. He was talking to some friends about smash, and when I approached him and said that I could beat him he invited me over to his house. He found out about smashboards then introduced me to it, and started trying to wavedash and tried to teach me how to wavedash. Eventually marthpwnzer(god forbid) got involved and we started going to tournaments, but this right after brawl came out so the tournaments were relatively small. After that I started playing P and the rest is the same for everyone.

i thought smash was the worst game ever when i first heard about it in 5th grade

then my friend rented it and brought it over (ssb64) and we ended up playing ALL night and not sleeping at all. we did like two full 99 stock battles it was ****ing epic

from then on it's the typical noob story. my friend introduced me to smashboards, I became the best in my circle of friends, got addicted to advanced techniques, learned about tournaments, etc etc

Melee came out and it was better than i could have ever imagined, etc etc

except i wasn't able to go to tourneys until i moved to cali. and then what do you know, the infamous Ken was hosting tournaments 15 minutes from me. And now here I am, winning cash playing the best game ever made. yayuhz

I heard about the blackhole glitches and was directed to smashboards. Then I saw the tournament and the Pac west forums. I learned that Ken was the best in the world and I wanted to be good too so I started playing. I was gonna quit but wanted to prove b!tches wrong and got good.

Now I'm hooked because this game is amazing.

When I was 16, me and my friend Derek "Wreckless"(you might remember him) played smash and like I was convinced there was nobody in the area(or anywhere for that matter) could beat me or my friend. Youtube was pretty new back then(def. not as popular as it is now), but we decided to look there to see just how well everyone played played this game. This was the first video I saw on smash on youtube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djBRTHuSzcA

I was convinced it was AR. I stumbled across smashboards through a link from youtube and found out all the advanced techs and I was in complete aw. I ran up to my room and instantly started try to wavedash, first week, then shffl, second week, then slowly incorporated the rest of it as time went on. Within the next 2 weeks I went to my first tournament at Devry and got 6th out of pure luck. I was a pretty big mouth so most you older smashers probably remember me in the power rankings thread. My story seems so typical.

Got SSB as my christmas present when it came out. Then got melee when it came out. I started to find out the competitive scene when I checked out gamefaqs in mid 06.(I didnt bother making a swf account at that time) I then found out that play n trade was gonna host a tourney as I was looking for a wii(rofl). That was my first tourney and I went like 4-2 with my Marth.(Alot of scrubs) When brawl came out I was mostly using AiB to look for tournies. The first legit melee tourney near my area I found was aznforces tourney. And Thats when I started to use swf more and going to tournies ever since.

How i got into smash?

when i was in the dark street alley...lost...DC$ aka The godfather of 949 reach out his hand, as soon as i saw him, I grabbed his amazing soft warm hand and went to go play melee with him for a month. Then i went to go play other fighting games. As Brawl came out..it was a dark time for me...playing a game where camping wins all the time, I tried so hard not to play that way then soon i realize brawl sucks. Then I ran into the godmother of 949 (kira) showed me the light (yay) then i was reunited with the godfather. The psychomidget took me in to his nice and warm home. then the rest is history

brawl sucks

what was I thinking wasting a year with that game?

Back during 1st - 2nd grade, in TLC we always always played smash 64. When Melee came out it was the game I got with my gamecube in 2001 and I played it all the time. I did the typical noob stuff like 10 stock matches on temple lol

Fast forward to 2006, I played Melee from time to time (still 5 stock matches on dumb stages lol) but wasn't that interested. My friend had just showed me youtube so I looked for videos of smash out of curiosity. My memory is fuzzy here but the first match I found was this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCdgk1hHAVM (same match but I can't find the original video)

Since I hadn't known about ATs or anything I was bugging out. I couldn't believe they could move that fast in this game I had been playing for years.

Summary of things after this: Find out Brawl is coming out/ find smashboards/ try to become legit Brawl player/ get sorta bored with brawl but keep trying to get better/ find this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wdn4rF8p9LI which makes me see how awesome Melee is again/ start practicing the Melee ATs I could never manage to do before/ drop fox for Falco because I wasn't technical enough/ meet JDM and the rest of Irvine/ drop brawl completely

I tried to make this short but it's really hard >_<

I played smash 64 for a while, never got technical

played melee since it came out, had a group of friends that all got into it, started smashing with modesto, never got technical

played some brawl, didn't really get into it much...etc.

there's a trend here, but I'm in it for the fun factor

I need to get more technical

I had a couple a friends that I played games with and one day I was invited to another friend's house to play Melee! I was playing with Marth then suddenly one of them said "You know how to wavedash?" I didn't know what he meant and my response was, "I'm just playing fast!" On the walk back home, he told me about smashboards and to look up Bombsoldier on youtube! This was around May of 06 and that was my first time hearing about youtube! I went on smashboards and made an account but didn't know how to navigate around the site so I didn't post at all. My friend showed me the AHTP vids and attended my first tourny in Oct of 06! Started making friends and yeah . . .

me and steven were friends since like 6th grade, when i moved to the 805
we both got into smash together--it was his link vs my luigi every day in 10th grade, yayuhz. eventually we started playing with tipZ (erik) and RIPTIDE, then went to a few shuffle and cut tournaments.

brawl came out, and we met oscar, brendan, and kilo at the Chapman 3 tournament (at UCI, LOL) because we were all really lost. i realized that brawl was lame, and it wouldn't feel rewarding to get good at something so easily, so we stuck to melee.

then the fateful day

me and atlus had the same godzilla avatar
so at dave's cal poly pomona tournament, i did an avatar match with him and lost, so i had to switch to the DK salute avatar.

soon after i went to pat's house, met tofu, mike haze, mango, etc, and kept at it and here i am

lol

Anywho I remember when I first saw the SSB64 commercial I immediately wanted to play that game. So I ended up renting but never got around to buying it.

I got melee soon after it came out and was the best out of my friends (obviously). Played it alot but never knew about tournaments. Weird thing is I always wanted to enter one but never thought of looking for them online :/

Then sometime in 06 my friend Kevin (who I think only Adam and Kira know) stumbled across smash videos, and we started to play nonstop. We went to our first tourney at some gamestop (legit tourney though, panda and other ranked players were there), then went to our second tourney at MLG anaheim. Anywho he was most of my practice (on a slightly laggy TV we later learned ), but hes stopped playing since hes got the noob mentality when it comes to improving. He mostly plays SF4 now while I mostly play melee, though we occasionally play the other.

BTW my sagat fukkin *****. Im learning to kara shoryu (both kinds of karas, the step-kick and that really far reaching kick) under projectiles at will

I bought Melee around 2003, but it got really boring just playing by myself. I went to gamefaqs to see what other people were doing, learned about the advanced techs, and watched the first real matches I'd ever seen at www.ssbm.it/awesomevs.htm (which is still up, funnily enough).

For years I watched the major combo videos (every DBR vid, Kaze no Kizzu, Rollout, etc), matches (back when people had to get them from DC++), and kept up with the major tournament results, such as the MLG series. I was excited when KillaOR's True Life came out. I stopped paying as much attention to the Melee community when Ken retired, but regained interest a few months after Brawl came out, when I was starting to realize that Brawl was a horrible game.

I only got involved personally in the Melee community after Genesis. After hanging on every twitter update about the match between Mango and Armada, I figured I had to overcome my inexplicable fear of posting and go to a tournament. I found Rina-chan's farewell tourney on allisbrawl and went on the Melee day. Even though there was barely anyone there and there was no real tournament, I had fun, and figured that this was something I wanted to keep doing.

Now, I kinda regret all the years I spent not getting involved, but then again, better late than never. :)

Won a spelling contest in 3rd or 4th grade and my mom got me a cube + Melee (cuz I wanted it so bad after seeing it at my friend's house)

Let it collect dust for years

My friend showed me Adventure by SDM

Let it collect dust in the back of my mind for about a year

My friend tells me about advanced techniques and shows me an AT list on GameFAQs

I learn how to WD 60% of the time and then I ignore Melee for a year

I go to a tournament expecting to get ***** and I go 0-2 and want to get better

I played Halo 2 with my friends back in 2005. We tried to get as good as possible, and started playing with MLG randoms. I was aware that competitive smash existed because it was on the MLG circuit, but I didn't really have an interest in it. I hadn't played Melee more than a couple times ever.

In April of 2006, a guy I used to play Halo with got in touch with me randomly. He told me about competitive smash, and showed me the FC3 Crew Battle videos. Old school socal [especially San Diego] might know this guiding force as Romeo619. [Old school AZ might remember Butters 000, another halo player that guided me to Smash].

I went to MLG Anaheim with my friend and my dad. It was my first smash tournament. The tournament atmosphere immediately grabbed me. The day before Melee started, I played some friendlies with AlphaZealot. I saw DBR come into the room. I recognized them from their combo videos. I saw KillaOR, who I recognized from the FC3 vids. It was cool to be around the 'celebrities'. The next day, the tournament began. I watched people warm up. I remember particularly watching Romeo[not 619] win like 15 consecutive games on a TV.

Finally, my pool was called. I heard a couple names I recognized: Taj, Azeem and HyugaRicdeau. My pool was ran by Tink, and to this day I think he called me "Super***Brian". He told me to play my first tournament set against Taj. I don't think there is a more intimidating opponent to face your first time. He's tall as ****, scary as hell and had a posse cheering for him. I got absolutely ***** the first game. I landed two hits in a 3 stock match. The second game he went pikachu, and destroyed me. I later won my first tournament set [and the only one I would win for almost a year] against Dino, beating his fox with my marth. I met Sheridan, who is a pretty cool guy.

Maybe the most important thing that happened at my first tournament was seeing SilentSpectre play. I hadn't heard of him before, but he blew me away. He was the most dynamic played I had ever seen. I saw him falcon punch off screen to finish a doubles match. I saw him moonwalk -> up-B someone. I saw him 3-stock Wife on Brinstar. I was inspired to keep watching and playing smash. I couldn't quit after seeing someone so electrifying play.

I'm tired of typing about this, but basically it was ****.

I don't remember exactly when I got a hold of Melee, but I remember I got it waaay later than when it came out, and I would only play it once in a while when friends came over and stuff.

The Brawl rumors came about and one of my friends who knew a little about ATs decided to train me in Melee so we could be good at Brawl too. Little did we know...
Stopped playing for a while until Brawl came out, and played that sorta competitively from when it came out to like September. I had signed up for AiB because another friend who had known about ATs and competitive smash referred me to it. Somewhere around that fall, Pat contacted me and told me to go to one of his smashfests, which I ended up doing. I remember awkwardly walking in and saying hi to everyone else. To my surprise, everyone was playing Melee. This was the beginning of something beautiful.
I didn't really like Brawl to begin with simply because Samus (and everyone else) felt completely different to me and I didn't like the way they played at all. I had bounced around with mains, but I was never really satisfied. I LOVE Melee Samus.
That smashfest had Brawl later on in the night, but no one playing Brawl looked to be having as much fun as they did playing melee. So I tried it out thinking I had some decent skillz left over, but I was wrong.

LONG STORY SHORT

Met Pat
Picked up Melee "again"
Went to more of his smashfests
got *****

I pretty much met every SoCal person I know now at those smashfests lol

I remember...
embrace telling me to ftilt more
doing falcon teams with derek
killing derek
lovage ****** me while doing as much flashy **** as possible
romeo kneeing me across the stage
draft crews twice with me being a 4 stock loss...both times vs lovage
pbody ****** me with mewtwo

god i love it

i also remember seeing the ssb64 commercial
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A0DcI25QPQ
which i promtly had bought for me and i played it with my 2 best friends from grade school.

the day melee came out we all went to 1 persons house after school, and his dad picked it up for us while were were busy. it was amazing. LINK HAS TWO FORWARD SMASHES>!>!>!>?
we unlocked luigi right away. good times.
years passed and it was only and always my roy v ganon, hyrule temple.

in high school kilo asked us if we remembered melee. yeah i played it as a kid. oh man theres this thing called WAVEDASHING its like.... i dont know its indescribable thats how amazing it is. so we went over and ****ed around because it was too hard to grasp. ffa on dumb stages. i dropped roy for bowser because i was tired of sucky characters.

a new kid started going to our school, and he played wow. so we hunted him down, and he played on the same server as us!!!!! but he was horde and we were alliance. so we disliked each other irl for some time. one day i found this oscar guy practicing tech skill in the rec room after school, and we decided we could tolerate each other.

at this point is where i struggled a lot personally to shed my scrub mentality. i played bowser because i liked to lose. i could never even truly try during my matches (the the opposite end of the i cant play gay spectrum) i read playing to win so many times, but i eventually stopped being a scrub.

i went to a few tournies, my first one being ucla 4 or 5. i played festizzio in my first tourney set ever. i choked a FAT c0ck trying to impress gimpy wit my bowser. went to smash in the bank 2 and was mistaken for gimpyfish lolololol. took 2 stocks off luckys fox tho!

after that i really put smash on the back burner, heard about brawl, then picked it up a little now that it was pointless. brawl sucked ****. got hopelessly lost at chapman 3 until these 2 strangers pulled up and noted our gamecube controllers. we walked around with joe and twelve for an hour. i played this REALLY GOOD SNAKE ROFL XD named plan 9 on wifi. i went back to melee and dropped bowser.

until now ive been leveling slowly by not practicing and being dumb, but watch out jason, here i come

this is probably the best "how i got into smash" ever

now it needs a suitable follow-up about massive competitive success:lick:

My friend and I played one day and were **** even in skill level. I was not very happy with this so I went to a place called gamefaqs and learned the crap.

Then met other people in my same high school that knew this crap and pretty much it become fun as hell.

before melee i was a 64 player. my friends and i discovered n64 online and while they quit after a month i stayed because it was very addictive at the time. Boring story, but I did meet oscar in my 2nd n64 tournament

i watched vids of itsbme and sweetxignorance but never really played until i went to a melee/brawl tournament at my school last year. The reason being because I thought melee was dead/ going to die with the release of brawl

i had fun and teamed with ross aka ismokeherbz, a fellow 64 player, in our first melee tournament, we got ***** by top tier teams but we at least took some matches from the noobz

after that i loved the tournament atmosphere and playing with money on the line, melee is too fun and its worth losing a little money in tournaments because the fun makes up for it

my only regret is not playing this game earlier

I got Melee for Christmas in 2001 when I was a sophomore in college. I played a lot of single player and then I got my roommate at UCSB sort of into it during my senior year. As soon as he could no longer handle my ROY, I decided I would venture out and see what the world had to offer in terms of competition.

My first tournament was TG6, at which point Lcanceling and wavedashing were things I had no idea how to do. I lost to Takuto from Japan and FERNO (Bob$), going 2 and out. My second tournament was a week later at the San Jose V-GAMES (Mushroom Kingdom I was legal, too good) where I got like 9th place out of 30+ (mostly nubs like myself) or so, and incidentally Hella Nick and some of his cohorts were there and handed out homemade prizes to 1st-4th, which is probably more than they ever saw from V-Games. A month later I showed up to a random house tourney in Salinas one day, where there were present such legends as The Game II and the inimitable ShadowBTZO, legendary Salinas Champion and 4-stocker of Mango. I destroyed everyone, and that's when I decided I might have a future in Smash.

I met this kid named sheridan, he told me about smash. I was reluctant to join him playing because he looked like a ***ot who played with paper all day. Eventually I played ,and met my cousin rudeezy for the first time. I hated him and wanted to beat him. I actually tried for 3 months, and then beat him ease. Then this gay kid named bill wanted to beat me but he was a **** peach who cant float cancel and I won. Then I went to tournaments and met some people. Most of which were extremely nerdy ,and who said stupid **** like **** at the top of there lungs to be cool. Then I went on smashboards more, and purposely decided to make everyone hate me because im the best troll in the world. Then I met a whole bunch of try-hards, and people who thought they were better then me. Like that kid JDM who in person acts like he has a **** in his mouth and cant talk. THEN i hated sherigami more then anyone in the world. He came over and tried to impress my little brother, i called him out and he cried and ran out of my house. THen he said he would fight me but just *****ed out cause hes a pus s y

THEN PEOPLE REPORT ME CAUSE I MAKE THEM SAD :[[[[[[[[

knowing you, you'll be like "no mm me for $50 instead cuz i dont know what the hell why you dont want to mm me for $100" ***** pu$$y chickening out like that

The reason why he doesn't talk to you cuz ya not good enough to hear him talk.

you should MM JDM while ya at it

I got $30 that my boy will **** your **** up with his fox

I'm pretty sure JDM can even go falco/falcon and still whoop your *** all day

jason stfu and stop trying to be badass. i've told you multiple times the MM isn't going to happen, even you would remember at least one of those times. nobody is going to get at you. you have a better chance of fighting him than MMing him. and while it's good that you're defending JDM i really doubt he needed to be defended lol.

i actually laughed out loud at marthpwnzer's story. it was entertaining

friends and I would play after school at his pad
but when he discovered smashboards and advance techs i was the only one who would keep going over and sadly we were basically each others only competition in the area =[
