I think the issue might just be that your expectations are too high for yourself, based upon what I've read, you're trying to bite off more then you can chew. People are looking at this from a physical sort of way, I agree in that you should step away from it all, and come back to it in awhile, dont come on the boards, dont do anything, then go back, maybe grab a new character, work your way back to where you want to be(technically speaking) then switch back to your real main. the change might be enough to get you back to a level where you feel comfortable. I mean, if you change to a character you're not that great with, become good, it in turn might affect your confidence enough to change everything around, Im doing the same thing now, I stepped away from the game for a week, My Marth kept getting *****, looked at my issues, changed mains, came back and everything going a bit better, and even though I never used Marth when practicing, when I did use him, I was performing at the level I thought I should be at.

Generally, yes, but how to you explain people who legit enjoy looking awesome more than anything else?

I play ITG/DJ Max/O2Jam/SMO/GunZ/Guilty Gear/Melty Blood AA. Being fast as ****, and flashy IS my MO. It's not a cop out. I used to play lame as ****, but it got boring.
I said optimal play, not "lame" play. Maybe sometimes hanging back and camping is optimal. Maybe other times aggression is. While minimizing risk happens a lot, optimal play is more about maximizing returns. Adding flash may sound cool, but if it's literally no reward in exchange for having the possibility of missing an opportunity, then you're focusing on the wrong thing. Such a self-centered playstyle is limiting you because it cares too much about yourself rather than the rest of the game.

Also, a good half of the games you listed don't really have any flashiness involved, unless you also freestyle your stepcharts rather than FA. GunZ may be one of the few games where style can legitimately be argued, but though Guilty Gear and MBAA may be cool to watch, the awe is less in adding in superficial flash and more in clean execution.

ahah, but no seriously, training mode is a loner's best friend. I say loner because you said you have no one to really play, atleast this way you can keep your tech skill consistent or even improve...

If the games not fun or not appealing to you as a game still, then once again, take a step back, becoming overly obsessed with a game is actually going to have negative affects and drawbacks.

I watched some set where you almost beat Forward I think. It looked like you improved a lot since last year's videos.

I was playing super awful vs Forward, too LOL.

But yeah, I improved by leaps and bounds after I came home from DGDTJ. Most of my improvement came around January/February, and I peaked in March. I've just been maintaining since then. :|

@Bing: The game is amazingly fun. Training mode is not, but pretty much necessary in my circumstances.

/thread. Sounds like you're tunnel visioning melee. Except I might have a read a post about you playing other games. Dedicate your freetime to something else like juggling, pushups, Reddit, or reading.

I'm focusing on Melee because of my frustration with the lack of improvement, and because it's my favorite game, but otherwise I play Melty Blood, In The Groove, DJ Max, Third Strike, and Yugioh TCG.

I'm actually EXTREMELY good at Yugioh, but I lack the funds necessary to facilitate taking the game seriously anymore.

^ I used to love Yugioh too. That game started to suck a long time ago imo, about the same time they decided to ban dark hole and monster reborn and other staple ****. Just so they could release new overpowered **** in the form of synchros and tuners

Grinding is how Axe got good. Why shouldn't I?
Because some things only work for certain people and you have to find what makes you shine the most in order to grow the best way possible. I'm saying using your mind in a way you think is best. If grinding is all it took to be the best, man it would be too easy. lol. Basically, it's more like how you spend your time training since there's always lots of noobs training just to train or to play. Just like going to a gym and grinding your muscles, it might make you stronger but it won't able you to use your body at 100% potential, (That sounds like what you are doing) you won't be able to do flips doing it like that. My best friend always said to train everything in order to have no weakness, once that happens then you can use your style in anyway that you want whether to be flashy or super campy. It's like knowing your options and know that you can punish at any point in time because you have complete control of yourself and the opponent's options. You have to understand every little details and be able to counter-attack everything, and you have to be super fast and have great reaction time... there's no time for little games at high level. =P

Then, that's a start. Find the root of your problems and go from there, it might be a bit scary but anyone can do it if they sit down and think what to do next. For me, I always was able to see what I can do next and work the next step to become better and better. Idk if you take it one step at a time, to me it seems like the best way. Just eliminate one weakness after another.

When I sit down and think I usually end up extremely depressed. I'd rather not go down that road, since I'm relatively content with my life at the moment. :3

AAHH This. Your fuel to play melee is anger and frustration (i'm not sure how true that is). This is a really bad way to go about learning/training.

Well it sounds like your problems with melee are a metaphor for your problems with life but that is getting into some deep, emotional bull****.

My fuel to PLAY melee is enjoyment. My fuel to get better is salt. :3

Also, I'm a pretty ****ed up person. >_> Melee only has a very small amount to do with my problems, though. <_<

Well sometimes you must, or else it'll follow you forever. You think I haven't gotten some depression before? I've had plenty but I mean I just tell myself these days that if a problem arises even though I don't like to deal with them, I have to. If not then it's a stress that's going to stay with me for a long time and torturing me inside, of course I don't want that. I want the glorious light instead... and to get to that is, definitely lots of work. Eliminate the darkness holding you back to advance further, lol. It has been said in the thread that having a good life outside the game definitely helps to get better. I think it's true because I mean bringing problems inside the game is like basically running away from the problem, that's something you can't really do.

That's no excuse, aren't we all living right now?

Fyi, I started doing the "recycling of my being" 5 years ago. I'm 26 now and feeling pretty happy, I haven't gotten depressed in a long time now, it takes practice. =P

Everyone else is saying to avoid melee until it's no longer an issue. Truth be told, Melee is one of the few things that keeps me sane, and keeps me wanting to wake up, and get through the day. Avoiding it would be pretty counterproductive.

Well like Dashizwiz, he's a freaking badass person and doing what he loves outside the game and it shows his personality inside the game. Me being a warrior shows inside the game too because that's what I always wanted. It takes lots of work to be a strong person/player. It goes hand in hand.

6 years ago, I would never have thought any of this.. trust me, I used to think that I didn't need a mind in order to get strong lol.

I don't really like anything that isn't Melee anymore. LOL.

The few other things I do like, I can't do, mostly because of a lack of funds.

How do you know if you like/hate something if you haven't tried it yet? I mean there's TONS of things to do in this life. I understand we all have preferences but there's always fun surprises. Though in this case, it's not exactly about what you do for fun or anything, it's to make yourself better in order to see what's next. Of course you can't see anything if you haven't started digging through your own little hole. =P

I can form a relatively educated opinion based on an explanation, watching it being done, and comparison to what I do and do not like.

Hey, at least you actually understand what I said, though. I've had that exact conversation thousands of times and nobody else really gets that.

Well.. that's because I can relate and have done the same in the past too.. hell even sometimes now too. I would be a saint if I could act on everything I wanted to do lol.

But I do like this saying: "A warrior acts, a fool reacts"

Personally, I don't think I can bare to stop myself from doing something I want to do eventually even if it's hard. I still want to feel lots of things otherwise, I know I'm the one gonna be stuck in my own darkness. Can't wait too long because life itself isn't merciful at all.
