I feel that way with melee. Generally when people suggest to take a break, I can't do it for more than a week or two at max. Not only is it an addiction, but it's legitimately my favorite thing ever.

Well ya it depends on how you work I imagine, but ya 1 week or 2 break is more than enough to think about what to do next. You don't really need 2-3 months lol.

Unfortunately because of my current life situation, I HAVE to take several week-long breaks. There have been periods of time where I've gone a month or two with zero smash just due to bad timing, etc.

Bro if smash is the only thing that gets you through the day or whatever you NEED something else in your life. Not another person. Not another distraction. You say you don't even know how your mind works... These are red flags.

You need to find what makes you tick. What makes you happy, or sad, mad, etc. And you need to feel all of these emotions. It will enrich your life in the long run. You seem to be in a state of depression. You don't have to be sad all the time to be depressed. You can simply not feel much. And being distracted is no better.

Getting familiar with yourself would be the fastest path to improvement in anything.

I don't see why I can't just focus on smash. :3

But, seriously. Self-reflection for me usually turns in to some pretty intense self-deprecation.

@Umbreon: I'm collecting everything said in the thread and mulling it over, weighing my options, etc. I'm not just ignoring, or blowing people off. :)

@Bing: I don't really feel comfortable discussing that.

Why? Because, what if Smash dies at some point, what will you do? That's the most important question. If you can't answer that, then you are ****ed.

That's just what I think. I went through a phase where I listened to a buncha self help audio books. I was sarcastic at first with it but it ended up being legit. People seem to proud to want to improve themselves. I also got into yoga a bit and I think that helped me. I'm not saying you have to do these things.

I only say this because I think you're a smart dude and you can do it. I wouldn't waste my time if I thought it was hopeless.

Another small step is to say you are whatever you want to be(Great at smash). Fake it till you make it. A lot of people do this but end up cocky and jaded. If you can accomplish doing this and staying humble then you're golden.

I knew this thread would eventually devolve down to a psychoanalysis of Rubyiris lol

let me put my cardigan sweater and fake reading glasses on for a second.

"Rubyiris, you tell me you love Super Smash Bros Melee for the Nintendo Gamecube like a mother loves her child. But, are you happy? Hrrrm?"

I don't really think about it, since I'm sure something will come down the road that will interest me.

I'll have to try the fake it until it's true approach at some point. I just need to get over my own desire to be honest about everything.

I'm not a particularly humble person, though. My ego is pretty large, and my pride, fragile.

I'm not happy, but smash doesn't have much to do with it LOL. Sure, not being where I want to be in relation to how long I've played is frustrating, but my actual love for the game, and the Arizona community overshadows this.

..But yeah, pretty much every thread I'm in turns into *****s psychoanalyzing me. >_>;

You play way too flashy and do unnecessary tech skill mid-combo, and that tends to make them end prematurely (lol). If you truly want to play to win and get better, you have to drop the flash.

Overall, you need more polishing. You don't have any other major weaknesses, but everything could be better. I think your needless tech skill also interferes with your spacing a lot.

Also, learn to be happy outside of anything Smash-related, and you'll be better naturally.

ruby, every thread you make turns into people psychoanalyzing you because you always bring yourself up :p

isolate the feelings in your life that are valuable. if smash is truly your favorite thing, then there should be a way to achieve these feelings through the medium of the game. you probably just lost sight of it.

and if you truly feel that you can't achieve these feelings in smash, and the two are completely incompatible, then you shouldn't be playing. your whole life should be about the pursuit of the things that you love. if smash isn't it, then so be it.

it seems like you have too many ideas of yourself, and you're chained to these ideas.

"self-reflection always turns into self-deprecation"
"my ego is large; my pride, fragile"

you've admitted that you haven't been happy with the spot you're in. how can you change if you keep giving credit to these silly ideas of what you can and can't do? your hold yourself back when you stubbornly stick to an old definition of what you are.

sorry for getting new-agey, but those are all questions that i've asked myself, and i think they would apply to you as well.

on the practical side of things, DON'T PRACTICE TECH SKILL FOR HOURS ON END.
i swear to god, there is no faster way to ruin the thing that you love than by pressing it in a vice and trying to squeeze every last ounce of enjoyment out of it.

if you really want to improve, and you think compulsively playing is a problem, then set a limit on the time you play. i think an hour a day is good. even if it feels like there are more things you can work on, just shut your cube off, and you'll be that much more excited to play the next day.

if you spend hours grinding, then you're probably in smash-obsessed mode, which is not the way to get better. you need to clear your head and develop a healthy relationship with the game. it might seem hard or impossible, but it's actually the easiest thing in the world. realize you've held yourself up to an impossible, inhuman standard. accept your weaknesses so that you can embrace them, incorporate them, and turn them into your strengths, both in and out of smash. again, i'm saying all this out of experience. (if you really are having trouble, try meditating :p. it sounds corny but it's actually ****ing amazing)
