So it seems safe to say Melee is on its way back. We have tournies about every week now. The community is growing considerably the past couple of months, with even lesser players being dedicated enough to show up to as many tournies as they can.

But Melee's an ever-evolving game, and everyone keeps improving. It's nice to set high goals to have something to work for, because someone is always working harder than you. What do you hope to accomplish this year? How are you going to take advantage of Melee's revived popularity?

For myself, well, I'm actually going to put Melee on the backburner a bit. I worked my *** off in 08 and I kind of just want to rest on my laurels a little bit. A TINY bit. But mostly I am going to school in a couple of weeks and I really want to do well, so school is No. 1 priority. I'll still be able to play smash often enough since I'm lucky enough to have a cool job, but I want a 4.0 so I'm probably gonna have to work pretty hard, especially since I haven't worked hard in school since... actually, ever.

For melee, though, I just want to help the community grow, motivate people and help them get better little by little. I want to help people on the Sheik boards and learn more about my character. I want to use Sheik and Marth 95% of the time and retire my ****ty secondaries. I want to play people better than me much more often than before, because I have finally earned it, and now it's the only way to get dramatically better anymore. I want to put myself in the most stressful smash situations possible so I become like Hugo and am more focused than anyone else. I want to use Sheik the vast majority of time in teams and focus on being the best partner possible.

More than anything, though, I want to see what it takes to be as good as Zhu and Lucky and prepare myself to work that hard to attain that level. I never want to be seen as someone who is not constantly improving their game. I felt like I constantly improved last year, and I want to keep that up. I want to make it very clear that there is a significant gap between people like Fly Amanita, Lovage, Atlus, and Tofu (my main rivals) and me. I want to represent SoCal in crews at Genesis. If I achieve this goal, then I can start working towards challenging Mango.

What about you?

Introduce myself to the socal melee community and by the end of the year, have won a few tournaments around socal. Play lovage, and play everyone in the socal melee community I can.

After West Coast Smash League I decided I wanted to be "competitive" by the time Genesis rolled around. Obviously it's a little vague. I was considered to be among the worst in NorCal. Now, I'm just trying to improve the most I can.

First, I want to get better than Lovage.

To be honest, it doesn't seem like he even cares about the game. He acts like nothing's important, plays WOW at smashfests, or talks about melee getting boring after placing 2nd at one tournament.

This frustrates the hell out of me.

We've been playing for as long as each other, are from the same place, and go to tournaments together and everything. For these reasons, he's almost like a benchmark to my skill level. Right now, I've fallen behind a bit.

But I want to prove to myself that a competitive attitude can get you farther than a weird style, or superfluous tech skill, or location and circumstance. I want to overcome any limitations that may be holding me back right now so that I can exceed my expectations and start getting seriously good.

That's why I want to beat him--it's the first step on the way from "good" to "great."

After I establish some consistency, I want to travel around the country for tournaments. Watching MLG videos as a noob, it seemed like there was this sort of lore behind the melee scene; every tournament was part of a legend that the whole community knew of. Each epic match became part of our collective memory, and each tournament was a thread in the fantastic tapestry of the smash community. Where were you when Mango won pound 3?

Now, with genesis, it seems like this national scene is reviving for melee, and this summer is the time to form new memories. More than anything, I want to be a part of this. I want to leave my mark on the smash community, I want people to know who I am and to recognize me as a great person and a legendary player. Hopefully, by like late August tournaments people on the East Coast will sit up and take notice of me. By the end of the year, maybe PC Chris will watch me on youtube and say "hey, that kid's pretty good."

I want to be a part of the new, nation-wide melee community.
And that's my main goal.

That was a pretty well-written post.

By the way, I don't think anyone takes any of what Lovage says about Melee getting boring and etc. etc. seriously. It reminds me of a little kid just wanting attention, so I never give it to him. You're talking about a dude who plays Lvl 1s for hours on end. It's probably cool to him to view it as unimportant; it helps his self-image. **** it, I just let him do him.

Another edit: Joe, I think you're trying too hard. You want it so hard that that's all you're focusing on. Focus on the processes and you'll achieve the end goal. Only the process matters.

To beat one of AZ's top 5 in tournament.

(Forward, Taj, Wobbles, Axe, Light, probably respectably)

Go to Pat's house.

Start thinking when I play melee. In other words, make more of a point of capitalizing on my opponent's mistakes and attempting to predict their next series of actions instead of simply reacting to what they throw at me.

That, and not lose to characters that cc downsmash.

Learn the CP stages better.

I wan't to do this since I have potential of showing to the smash community(those who use Fox/Falco, ext. , that once you know your character enough, there really isn't tier levels; thus Melee could grow).

You know, I really do think I try too hard sometimes. I have a tendency to over-correct, too.

Remember when you came over Adam, and told me that I was too aggressive? Well, I think I took that to heart too much, and now I'm Joe the friendly fox. A lot of times I notice myself thinking too hard about one aspect of my game, and I'll drop all of my good habits or forget to actually play wel.l

It sucks to think about it like that, but I figure that, as long as I'm doing it right, focusing on a goal so much isn't necessarily a bad thing. Think Zhu---I'm pretty sure he's like that, the workhorse of the smash community. I would say mew2king, but I don't want to compare myself to m2k because it sounds cocky anad I know that we don't think the same way when we play.

It kinda sucks, I guess, but I'd rather get my mental **** straight now rather than later. This way, nothing can stop me once I get going.

My post was OK, not 's good as OP though.

HAHAHAHAHA

derek never fails to entertain

yeah joe, i figured out how to help people to get better when i was at your house friday.

gotta teach em one thing at a time. add one thing to your game, focus on it every match until you have it down pat, and then move on to the next thing. it's what connor did, it's what i do, it's what lovage does, it's probably what fly does. that way you learn the muscle memory for it, and you spot the situations in which to take advantage of it so naturally.

also P, remember when I was talking to you and I told you how old I was, it turns out I don't even know my own age, thats how hard I chill

so ya I'm gunna be 20 soon

ninja edit: ya P taught me something that day too, when he was like 'don't just do moves' and I was like '****, thats a problem I had when I was a little **** sucker, guess I have to work on that again' lol being aggressive is fun, it's easy to get caught up in the attack part of the game
