UCSD Triweeklies are now melee. That means every three weeks, we get a melee tournament. You wanted melee back? Now it's back. Now it's put up or shut up time.

Last Saturday I went to SD for the triweekly. Never been to one before. Most of you probably have, so you can confirm when I say it was one of the most efficiently run tournaments I've ever been to. SD has a gigantic smash community, there is a lot of space, and most importantly, there is a lot of competition.

The triweekly thread isn't getting much love, and even when I asked who was going in the melee community thread last week, no one said a word. I don't really care as to why, but that's why I made this thread: now everyone will know, and no "I didn't look in that big *** thread" johns (or even read the subject, how convenient).

Even without the word of mouth -- to paraphrase Azn Lep's words it was kind of just thrown together -- there were still 40+ entrants. There's no reason you shouldn't go.

The only john I can think of is that it's far, but the way I see it, SD used to come up all the time to a bunch of melee tournaments. 805 does it now, and they're just as far. If you're committed, you do it. If not, then whatever, it's still all good -- just don't whine in the next breath about how you really want to play melee.

Make it happen.

if i have to be the jesus to save the smash community, then so be it

someone has to step up and see if anyone else will come along for the ride

now that rapelicate is gone, i'm wondering if there's anyone left

I'm not sure you could understand unless you went to the tournament: we're talking about potential UCLAs every three weeks. That's how well organized this tourny is, that's how big the SD scene is. It pulled what, 42 people? How many people who went are regularly part of the Melee community? Two, Zhu and I, three if you include San Diego Reaper. Dunno about you, but that's amazing to me, and shows me that Melee is far from dead if we all realized that and did something about it.

If people aren't going to care enough to do anything about it, I understand and I'm not mad at them, but that's not me. I love this game too much to give up -shrugs-

You know, it just hit me how much potential these triweeklies have... 40+ with only TWO regulars... if the community really commit to these triweeklies, they can be HUGE.

805 couldn't make it because of rides.
joe was my ride everywhere and he played melee a whole lot
plan 9 and greatleon give us rides everywhere but SD is a long drive and it's not up to me to ask them to go that far for melee.

i think you're right in a sense that people need to step it up and should sacrifice more for melee, but most people have things they can't avoid and just can't make it. just cause this was a marking point for how well melee is at sd doesn't mean no one will go just cause we couldn't make it the first time.

P, if i remember you don't take classes, you have a job that can be done anywhere as long as you got a computer, and you own a car that you're able to drive to get everywhere.

i don't drive, and even if i could, i don't have a car available for me to use. i have school monday - thursday and have to study regularly , i don't currently have a job, but i am looking for one.

a lot of people are in the same boat as i am and it's just not as easy to get to tourneys.
(please correct me if i'm wrong cause i truly remember someone saying you don't go to school)

but in any case, if the ride was my problem i shoulda done more to get one, my bad, but exam johns i had one monday and tuesday. This next one is no excuse, but i still got no ride. But if you give me a ride, i'll show up and pay you accordingly.

The reason why I said stuff like:

it's still all good
and

I understand and I'm not mad at them
is precisely so someone like you wouldn't take it as a personal attack and get all offended.

Repeat: THIS IS NOT ABOUT YOU.

I know everyone's situations are specific to them, just as mine is to me. I don't care about judging you for it as I wouldn't expect myself to get judged for it. But it's really about priorities. I don't have very many higher priorities than smash; as a result, I play a lot of smash. I'm lucky enough to be in a position in my life where I can do that. Other people aren't so lucky.

But those things are irrelevant. If everyone knew, as a COMMUNITY, that there are consistent tournies with a large turnout with great hosts, competition and organization, then I believe Melee will make sort of a revival and everyone will benefit. But people DON'T know that because so many people have the impression Melee is dead, that even if THERE WAS a great venue with everything needed for a good tourny, a lot of people still wouldn't go. I'm doing my part to erase that perception of Melee. Knowledge is power.

If you agree, fantastic. If not, it's all good, I don't care.

Anyway, I leave with a cliche: When there's a will, there's a way.

Cliche but true.

LOL idk how anyone could take this **** as a personal attack....

Obviously some of us are not gonna be able to make it to select tournies for whatever reasons, but if you happen to not be doing jack **** on that day ( which i know is the case for some of you LOL) then you have no excuse.

But we definitely all gotta at least TRY to go to these, cuz if they got 40 with just P and zhu???

there would be at least 60 something next time....and who knows, we might even get more more people as they progress.

These could definitely be the start of melees return....not fully, but it'll be a start.

hey I come back on december 12th for thanksgiving and can stay for like 3 weeks
which means if there's a triweekly then I will go to it ^_^

also if there are any tournaments next saturday (thanksgiving weekend) I'll come down and try to hit those up too

edit for justice: P is soooo right, melee community (in socal esp.) needs to STEP IT UP and actually start going to tournaments

norcal's pretty good about it, and I wouldn't want to come back and **** people that are better than me just because they are rusty from there not being tournaments

if work doesn't get in the way, the week this is scheduled. I pledge to do everything with my power to attend. (hopefully this is scheduled in advance).

we had 48 at the last one with Aesis P and Zhu. I'm hoping by only having these once or twice a month or so, people will be able to make arrangements to attend. The next one should be on the 5th

EDIT: the 6th** not the 5th

I can give rides to people in my area, if they throw a small amount in for gas (doesn't have to be much).
not that a lot of people live in my area to begin with.

Finally a melee tournament, I'm there, as long as school doesn't get in the way.

I can drive people from the claremont/pomona area if they're claiming transportation johns (just help with gas)

Good things to see, Adam. I was surprised to hear your and others' reactions from the tourny. This definitely sparked my interest. I would be more than happy to go down and show my SD brothers some love, as they've done many times before. Thanks for the efforts and for putting out the word, Adam. I'm in total agreement; I think this is just what ppl need to realize that Melee is happening around them. Thanks again...

we need more than this imo.

san diego is far as balls. and i would love to make it to some of these. but def not all of them because that is hard.

someone in the 818 step it up with a venue for tournaments that people farther north like myself can make it to easier.

i am willing to hold some kind of melee monthlies in palmdale but i have about a 40 person max in my garage. and i know im too far north for a lot of people. so i would only hold them if i can get more than 20 people.

It's funny how Brawl made the Melee tournament scene revert to 2005 status;

except the metagame is like ridiculous now

I give it until this summer before Melee is back to how it was in 2006; tournaments every weekenddd
