I tried to put this in my own words, but constant back spacing and retypes eventually got me to just pull the article from TV tropes:

Sometimes, sounds can be incredibly creepy. In fact, they can be Nightmare Fuel. When you hear them the first time, they may not be that terrifying, but as time passes, they become more and more frightening as they gain more and more relevance. Given time, the sound comes to haunt you, even when you are not anywhere near the source. It doesn't just have to be a sentence, a catch phrase, a song, or even a laugh, it can also be a simple, mundane sound, like the creak of a chair, or a door, the sound of footsteps, the crackle of radio static, or any one of hundreds of seemingly mundane noises that suddenly take on a nightmarish relevance because of something you heard. This is usually a completely mundane noise that, due to context, will terrify you in ways that cannot be described. This can become High Octane Nightmare Fuel, especially if the noise is combined with terrifying imagery.
So out of morbid curiosity, has a game ever done this to you? For me it's the **** ReDead scream from OoT does the job. While it doesn't put me into a fit of pants-wetting terror it and anything that sounds eerily similar just brings back some not fun memories from my childhood.

We have a Zelda subforum, why not ask there?
Because the LoZ thing was just an example from my own experience. My friends and I were talking about this today and I just posted it up because I was kind of curious to know if this has happened to anyone else.

Yeah Gates. I'm pretty sure this isn't a Zelda exclusive topic. Just the TC's experience.

For me, I think back to RE4. The sounds of the Regenerator's breathing....I hated those things in my first playthrough (I missed the thermal scope which allowed you to see their weak points, so they just ate up ammo.)

Killer 7 had a fair few sounds (The laughing made when the Smiles blew up in your face) that freaked me out a bit, though that whole game was pretty twisted.

Hahaha, MY nightmare fuel was kinda stupid! Whenever I lost on Super Mario kart and everything got dark and the music slowed down into a 'disappointed' tone, I really wouldn't mind it... But then I ended up having nightmares about that.

Metroid Prime (Hypermode is best, but any works) when you get the Echo Visor, the power goes out...

And Metroids Shriek. God that scared me so bad...

Yeah, same here. I've had nightmares in which Regenerators, with their systematic breathing, would stalk up to me getting louder and louder. It's so freaky. D:

The Hunter's screams from Left 4 Dead, everytime it jumps for a pounce. Its scary as hell when you're a Survivor.

And the Feral Ghoul's screeching in Fallout 3. Equally terrifying, especially in the Dunwich building where its dark and spooky.

I've always been terrifed of the ReDead scream as a kid.

I guess the moans of the Zombie ants in Jet Force Gemini gave me nightmares when I was young. I guess the fact that they tore their flesh and couldn't die with out a shotgun also added the fear factor.

But I guess some of the sounds in Bad Company 2 count as well. A sniper shot that cracks in the air just makes me want to run away.

Agreed. I'm like "OH ****! SNIPER! GET DOOOOOWWWNNN!!!"

Then I start zig zaging all over the place in hopes that it'll reduce the chances of them hitting me.
