Jesus, what happened to this thread? Is everyone okay?
I've just personally not had much to talk about with my boy. That said, I am working on some art as we speak that the Geno thread will enjoy. Hint: It's something that someone in this thread has suggested. ;)

I feel like finals are the reason the thread is starting to be a little less active.

But after finals, it'll be the majestic time of year education can by no means take over that is...

That's right, summer's coming, eh? Personally my least favorite season, given I live in Florida and it just compounds the heated hellscape that is this state. That said, there's lots of fun to be had with it... like a cute little scenario I came up with.

In Japan, there is a traditional summer game often played on the beach or during summer festivals called suikawari. It's basically a game of piñata with a watermelon instead of... well, a piñata. Whoever busts open the watermelon wins. Then, the spoils are split up among the party. (Fun fact: I think the watermelon festival in Super Mario Sunshine is loosely based off of suikawari, given the crushing of massive watermelons on the beach-side and all.)

Geno is a star spirit, and while he seems at least relatively savvy with the planet's way of living, he's not going to know everything, surely. Suikawari would likely be unknown to him. Just imagine him being told that he needs to smash the watermelon while blindfolded, being handed a stick to aid him. Upon being spun around and receiving the signal to make his attempt...

This dork, this absolute dullard, this complete and total efficiency-driven fish out of water, shoots the watermelon.

Everyone just kind of gawks while Geno proudly celebrates with a hearty slice of the fruit, declaring that, "Sticks are for squares." Too bad he's owned by a Square.

Google Theory?
It's a thing where people searched a character's name and then "Smash Ultimate DLC" and if you typed a certain character's name, the ad for the Fighter's Pass would pop up. The characters that this worked with were Banjo Kazooie, Ryu Hayabusa, Doomguy and Artorias (who's from Dark Souls)

I still don't believe Google theory... It look more like people are so thirsty for information that they went... Well , not insane. But they are doing anything to get more info.

At this point I would love King Boo to be a DLC fighter...
Or maybe not , people will think it'll be Edelgard/Byleth , GEN 8 rep and Astral Chains character.

Damn , E3 will be rough for the Smash community , trust me...

I just hope people don't get too salty.

No one should have any expectations. Or we should expect whatever our own personal worst case scenarios are.

I'm sorry , but I strongly disagree with this mindset.

This is nothing but anti-hype.
You're going to get bored/sad for the whole speculation period , and MAAAAAAYBE surprisingly happy or kinda disappointed.

People need to learn how to deal with their expectations. If they had some and they don't come true , then it depend.

If you need to vent , do it in the correct place.
If you want to continue to have these expectations "X character getting into fighter pass" , then go ahead. As long as you're not a **** about it.

The thing is , it's possible to have expectations , be disappointed , but be mature enough and dealing with the situation correctly. Politely expressing your disappointment , rethinking your expectations , ect...

With a "don't have any expectation , expect the worse" mindset , there is virtually no reason to do any speculation.
At this point , enjoy the base game and ignore DLC.

Personnaly , I have no expectations for DLC , because my expectations are not realistic. There is no way in hell somebody in my signature is getting in , except maybe Rayman or Geno. (Louie is dead without Pikmin 4 or echoes)
But I have other expectations for Smash : good balancing patches , no broken DLCs , good work on the DLCs , a character I can at least enjoy as DLC...

But that's how I personnally deal with the situation.

Some people could be dead set on something like "I want Dillon in Smash , and he will be a playable fighter ! With my support , I expect it to happen one day !".
This isn't a toxic mindset. Actually , that's what most magic about Smash Bros , supporting the character we love and having some level of expectations concerning their potential Smash representation.

I'm sorry , but I think this mindset shouldn't be praised at all. Worse , I think it's killing any enjoyment you could get out of Smash speculation.
Constantly getting reminded that you shouldn't expect anything out of a product you love and that you will buy isn't good.

Man , imagine somethin' like that for Mario Kart !
"I would love to see Hammer bro , E. Gadd and Petey Piranha as playable characters ! Since they've added several common ennemies , bosses and more niche characters , this can happen , so I can expect them or similar characters I could enjoy to get in !"
"Nah man , too much expectations. Bronze Yoshi and Silver Luigi are in , accept it already to not be disappointed"

And then , the discussion is dead. Nothing of substance. Just plain ol' nothing.

It's good to have more realistic expectations , like , Doom Guy ain't getting in Mario Kart. This is just not something that is realistic , despite being technically possible.

But this mindset is just boring.

Constantly hearing "Erdrick , Steve , Edelgard , Gen 8 rep !" As the "expect the worse/don't expect anything (so don't expect anything good)" is extremely tiring. I am not saying you said this about those specific characters , but that's litteraly how this mindset was used recently.
These characters are seen as "bad guys" , and so , their supporters. This create stupid tension between fanbases.
Heck , I WANTED INCINEROAR. But I litteraly avoid very vocal support (besides a few tweet for a friend who really wanted him) to avoid THIS.
And thus , Incineroar was seen as the "Vergebias/Chad/whatever" dumb furry porn steroids cat for a lot of people.
They ignored anything that this character could bring to the table , and heavily focused on negatives and creating more negative points.

And all of this started because of that mentality.

And being salty isn't a problem. Just vent in the correct place , and think about it.

I honestly think the main reason this mentality is so praised , is because people in the smash community have an hard time dealing with expectations that didn't come to reality.
Not saying you all are a bunch of idiots childs , but some people simply struggle more when their favorite character get rejected again. They have an hard time dealing with it , and do stuff that could be seen as silly or toxic.

So please... Avoid this mentality.
This is not something that should be praised.
If you don't want to have expectations/always expect the worse , then why are you speculating ?

---

I know that what I said sound silly when my last post sound pessimistic : but it's more fatigue than anything else.

People are focusing on "WHO IS IN KIKBDZFOP'BFD" instead of others subjects. And they are getting a bit ridiculous.
Myself I was VERY active in this thread for defending Geno and proposing counter-argument against others Square rep... But I gave arguments , and didn't used leaks as a solid argument , only quick mentions.
I tried my best to convince people that Geno's chances were still pretty strong... And once there was litteraly nothing else to add... I changed the subject.

Like... I barely see people posting fan-arts in support threads. Wich is like , the most universal way to support a character. No language barrier.

Also , this post wasn't directly against you , but was a point I wanted to address. I don't make you "the bad guy" , but this needed to be said (at least for me) , and I had a opportunity to do so.
So I apologize if you took it badly.

Well, I think it's more than just that. People also fear being called 'delusional' for having any hope, which is an unfortunate plague in the community. Let people hope and dream, sheesh.

Yup , for some god damn reasons , people feel the need to laugh at people who didn't get something right concerning a video game roster. Or were just hoping to have something they like actually be a thing in the game.

While I agree with your point , I think this over-all negativity come from this mentality.
Not saying all the negativity come from this , but this is what Iv'e seen.

Yeah, constantly being called "delusional" for my expectations and even my wants are what made me stop speculating on YouTube.

Smashboards is so much better, even if I do sometimes get slack for my expectations or wants.

There's a huge difference between calling people delusional and trying to let them avoid overhyping their expectations. The former is flaming. The latter is actually respectful and keeps drama from happening. We don't need more thread blow-ups.

While I completely agree with you , and that a reminder like that is always good... I think people can be mature enough with their hype and expectation.
I mean , "Hype responsibly" is kind of a meme , but Iv'e seen it used way too much when any semblance of hope for a character is present. (Not especially on SmashBoards , but on others websites such as Twitter or stuff like Discord... And let's not talk about YouTube.)

It's just to a point when it become tiring to constantly hear "keep your expectations in check !" when I dare to say something like "Geno COULD be in the fighter pass or future DLCs". Or they feel the need to hammer down any hope I have with rehashing the same ol' arguments Iv'e seen since months.
People that do that , or even if they have good intentions while doing so , need to realize that people can be aware of the risk of getting hyped/expectations... But are hyped and have expectations because it's more fun that way. And that , if what they want don't come true ... They can politely deal with it.

I'm going to repeat it again , but I agree with you. There are times when people are REALLY over-expecting or over-hyping themselves. Especially over something that has no guarantee to happen.

But damn , does it feel like it's impossible to speculate in Smash without talking about "chances" , "expectations" , or something like that. People forgot speculation is more than leaks , chances , counter-argument toward the credibility of a character getting in...

Let's just say people don't usually hype responsibly. It's why people do need a reminding to keep their expectations in check.

The fact when people don't curb their expectations drama happens is another issue altogether. But that's an issue for the Moderation(and yes, I've dealt with it enough to say it's a legitimate issue).

If somebody is telling you to keep your expectations in check because you say "it's not impossible", then you're doing just that. You're being completely reasonable. Some people don't know how to present the particular phrase well. That happens, of course. I've dealt with that too, where people are overly harsh in trying to lower people's hype just a tad. Some aren't able to do so very well. I've even went a bit further than I intended to more than once. We're only human. I fully understand how you feel. I mean, I'm a giant Quest 64 fan. Nuff said, you know.

As somebody who is guilty of telling people to hype responsibly, I can say it comes from a place of genuine concern. I was an Ashley supporter, and I could see her disconfirmation coming a mile away while the rest of the thread was so convinced she was in; it wasn't easy to watch the reactions. The same happened with Skull Kid. With Isaac I genuinely thought he was going to be in, and the disappointment was pretty crushing. So when I see a community heading towards something like that, I feel kinda obligated to give a warning.

I've been busy working so I haven't been able to be as active as I would like as of late.

I'm down for a group livestream of the E3 Nintendo direct, if anyone wants to make that a thing.

Chances are, that'll probably happen in the Star Road discord. :)

I feel ya there. My moment of crushing disappointment was Shadow, as I've mentioned prior. I thought he was practically inevitable until his assist was shown again, which absolutely crushed me. It's rough feeling like it's going to happen, only to have that stripped away in seconds. It's some hella whiplash that I refuse to fall victim to again.

"I know what it's like to lose. To feel so desperately that you're right, yet to fail nonetheless. It's frightening. Turns the legs to jelly. I ask you, to what end? Dread it. Run from it. Destiny arrives all the same.".....unless it doesn't.

The entire Ashley thing should work as a wonderful case study of how a community suddenly builds up on their own hype alone. I was a person who came around to liking Ashley just before she broke big, in part because I was looking to cast a wider net of more recent characters and she made some sense, but I've never seen such an unfounded momentum break out with any character support thread. No leaks about her. No foreshadowing of her character. No nothing besides her having some recent popularity, and suddenly you had an entire community not only convinced she would be playable in Ultimate, but that she was specifically being revealed in the August Direct. Things went 0 to 100 entirely too quickly and that community got destroyed in a moment's notice. As a person who was only somewhat invested in her (and became less and less involved as a near mob mentality formed about that certainty), it was fascinating to watch.

I too have been one to say, "Hype Responsibly" in the past because it really feels like things get out of control, myself included. In that sense, I'm saying it as much for myself as the community because absolute certainty about things doesn't really lead to productive or interesting discussion and seems more toxic in a community where speculation is the fuel that feeds the fire of the community. We as fans don't really make decisions and have only so much reach at the best of times, so certainty becomes an entrenched position in which people lock up and resist discussion on an issue none of us have a ton of direct or even indirect influence on. Character support works as our most reliable tool of direct influence, but so many characters compete for those spots that it does become much more difficult. Especially when our perceptions may not align with Sakurai's of these characters.

I also think it's important to establish a clear line in character support and discussion regarding a character's chances in the game as I'm sure you all are well aware given that I may not seem to be the strongest of Geno supporters when I talk his chances. Character support covers talking about the game a character is from and the surrounding franchise, potential Movesets, interactions in trailers and cinematics if relevant, character art, etc. Character chance covers what the state of things looks like in the speculation community and what factors might play a role in a character's inclusion, which is a much wider and much more complex issue. I'm not going to try to same my interpretation of those factors is correct, that would be absurd. But I do think it's of benefit to be cautious every time a character's chance for making it into Smash gets discussed. Not as a sign of pessimism (That would be just losing hope entirely), but as grounded as possible and not necessarily holding things like fan popularity above all else.

Geno himself is just in a really weird place that makes him a lot more difficult to discuss since the majority of decision making regarding including Geno in Smash would be fan support and Sakurai's interest. The second has usually been enough to get a character into Smash with no questions asked, but that hasn't meant anything for Geno so far for unknown reasons and to be completely fair, Sakurai has never just chosen a third party because he felt like it. Joker has lots of stuff backing him up from Shin Megami Tensei and Persona in addition to being from one of the most critically acclaimed games, and more specifically JRPGs of recent memory, but I guess he might come closest. Snake I guess could also fit that category sort of, but he's also from a hugely established franchise with specific ties to the creator in Kojima.

Then fan demand becomes tricky because Geno gets picked if they choose to emphasize fan demand (assuming that fan polls are representative enough, but if they can get the rights to Sora that situation also becomes more complicated given his increasingly consistent popularity on our polls as well). But other Square Enix characters may be chosen for different reasons You choose Dragon Quest to represent the legacy of the grandfather of JRPGs in the franchise. Kingdom Hearts to represent the other most ambitious crossover franchise. Tomb Raider and Lara Croft as another gaming icon. Any one of these gets chosen for a different reason than the last. Square Enix has just an absolute ton of IPs that would make sense to crossover and also have varying degrees of popularity. Which character gets chosen relies completely on what the thought process was behind a "Square-Enix choice" was. Which even that assumes that the choice of a publisher specific DLC candidate was made first and not the specific character, which would seem to be directly in contrast with how most characters are chosen for Smash.

It's just so genuinely messy, and I find it extremely interesting and exciting to discuss exactly because of those reasons. I really do prefer Geno out of all of the candidates, but I'd accept almost any Square rep we get outside of say the Bravely Default series. IF we get one that is.

Gotta say, I don't really support the "hype responsibly" viewpoint. Constantly being told to keep your expectations in check gets pretty annoying after a while. It's pretty much another way of saying "you can only have one opinion." Everyone's free to have their own opinion on what they think will happen.

I understand it myself, but I'm in more of a grey area. I do worry and am concerned for how certain people will feel if Geno doesn't happen, but everyone's still free to their own opinion. I won't shove my beliefs on anyone. I can advise, but I understand if not everyone sees eye-to-eye on that. It doesn't make you any less intelligent or understandable. After all, if we all shared the same opinions, life would be so dull, haha.

Same. I believed in Grinch Leak and Geno all the way up to the bitter end and it was no skin off my back to be proven wrong.

Of course I was disappointed but it was being disappointed in a video game so not that big a deal.

I'm not gonna lie, finding out the Grinch leak was fake messed me up for a little bit, but for reasons that had nothing to do with Geno's inclusion.

The "hype responsibly" push is founded on this idea that we're not all sane human beings who can handle being disappointed and recover or move on from it, which I honestly find really patronizing. Sure, we shouldn't fall into a trap where we convince ourselves that something we want is going to happen based on spurious reasoning, but telling people to limit how much they emotionally invest in such a venture is really really destructive. Life is full of disappointments -- if we aren't allowed to risk being vulnerable or disappointed over a video game, we could fall into even more insidious traps that prevent us from making far more important emotional investments later in life. To hell with that. Take a risk. We'll all be able to pick ourselves and each other back up in the end if it doesn't go well.

I for one still think Geno's gonna make DLC, but if he doesn't then that's fine; I can always wait until Smash 6.

I don't think Geno's going to make the Fighter's Pass, but I still think he has a good enough shot at DLC regardless. I'm not going to stop hoping until it's all over. I'm in for the long haul. :drflip:

That said, I do acknowledge that his chances for now are insanely low. If we get more DLC than Fighter's Pass, though, his chances will skyrocket again. It's a weird position in my mind right now, so I'm just chillin', complacent.

I think it's annoying, especially when you already know that you need to adjust expectations.

Google Theory not having SE characters isn't a point against it. We were never guaranteed a SE character. We have unproven rumors and a small theory pointing to one, but that's it. Nothing concrete.

There's flaws with the Google Theory, but not having a rumor character isn't one of them.

I think that theory is totally absurd. The search engines are based on company advertising bias, or in this case, sheer volume of word hits in a given number of articles. That said, it depends entirely on exposure. The only reason doomguy and Ryu H. come up is because of the alleged "leaks" from before. ^ This, but that isn;t the only reason this theory is stupid as all hell.
There was a problem fetching the tweet

This doesn't look near as nice as what other people have posted...;(
This Twitter thread destroys Google Theory. It has zero credibility.

Ads can be faked, and they can be faked even by nobodies to look like they are Nintendo official. On top of that, as Firox Firox mentioned, Google's algorithm connects rampant discussion of characters as DLC to DLC and it also connects other DLC packs to the Fighter's Pass because they are both DLC. It doesn't make any sense to think this is anything more than an algorithm thing. God, people are so desperate despite relief and answers being mere weeks away.

On the topic of 'hyping responsibly' I tend to ignore people who tell me to do that. I will hype in whatever manner and level I want, and if I get let down hard that's on me. I'd rather be super excited and hopeful and get letdown than be super down about things and then be brought up. Not only does that means you are down most of the time and only brought up occasionally, but it also means that when something like...oh I don't know, say Geno gets into Ultimate...your reaction will be affected by your previous attitude.

Listen. If YOU want to be less excited about something because YOU know how you are mentally, that's on you. I am rarely affected by anything, find the good in things and get hype about stuff that I'm not interested in, and can bounce back easily if I do get down. Welcome to one of the few perks of ADHD.

In less agitated news, I now have my own Twitter for my stream. it's @ForsakenM45 or https://twitter.com/ForsakenM45.

For anyone who is interested here I will be streaming Dauntless tomorrow as it becomes available on PS4. I'm a huge Monster Hunter guru once I 'got gud' at the series and have done all but the final of final game stuff in Monster Hunter World and am salivating over Iceborne. I'm going to announce my stream times on my Twitter so you guys can keep up with me and also so I don't have to post anymore non-Geno or Nintendo stuff here. If I'm playing Smash or SMRPG I'll still post about it here though. After my break from SMRPG is done (which means I REALLY want to play it again over other things) I'll be doing Reverse Best Run in which whatever is the best stat for that character (Physical Damage for Geno/Bowser, Special for Mallow/Toadstool) is not what I grab but rather the opposite and yet I still try to beat the game. Not sure which stats that would be for Mario though...

Yeah my only two hopes were Geno and Skull Kid. I always operate under the assumption my next most wanted, Porky, has next to no chance as well.

It's very difficult to hype responsibly, but I'd rather get burnt until I cant feel the fire, than have to say I give up on Geno.

Giving up isn't the same thing as realizing he isn't as likely as you once thought. You can absolutely support unlikely/impossible characters. I do so all the time without issues. There's always a good middle ground from "expected" and "giving up hope".

I've been replaying Mario rpg on my wii:ultmario::ultbowser::ultpeach:
Nice ! Enjoy your playthrough !

Also , thank you for all the responses. It's very interesting to see everyone point of view on the "hype responsibly/expectations in check" subject.

---

On another note , what do you all want from E3 ? (Wich isn't Smash related news)

I'm personnaly hoping for :

-co-op/online multiplayer for Luigi's Mansion 3

-Physical port of Rare replay on Switch

-a big update for the home menu of the switch

-Bayonetta 3 info

-Any kind of Pikmin content.

I wanna see some evolved forms for the new Pokemon Sword and Shield starters. That way I know which ugly ducklings will grow into an ugly duck. Also, armor evolution sounds pretty hot. I wouldn't mind hearing a bit more about it.

I also wouldn't mind if Nintendo totally outdid themselves and gave the switch UI another background color or two. I know how intensive that can be, but maybe if we burn incense to the right gods, Nintendo will hook us up.

With all this talk about hyping responsibly, I think we should change the tired old phrase and quote the greatest philosopher of our time: 'Reality is often disappointing.'
