Geno (♥♪!?): Return of the Starsend Savior

So with Captain Toad's deconfirmation I was thinking... there's no other Mario character left deserving of a spot in the roster. Only Captain Toad, Daisy and Waluigi would seem logical inclusions to me, and Daisy was the only one who made it... as an echo. So, no new Mario fighter this time? Even though Captain Toad and Waluigi are immensely popular and probably did fairly well in the ballot?

There are two explanations: there will not be any new Mario fighters (in Smash 4 we got both Rosalina and Bowser Jr., and the comeback of Dr. Mario, so Mario has already a good number of characters)... or Sakurai is leaving Mario's newcomer spot to Geno. That would explain why Waluigi is still a AT, two Mario newcomers would be overkill in a game which (presumably) won't have many newcomers, although to be fair we got 2 in one day along with 3 echoes.

He appears in the background of New Donk City, although to be fair it could always be an Alfonzo situation. But I don't think that Sakurai would make him appear as a cameo if he's going to be playable.

Rool is confirmed and characters like Ashley Chrom, Zero, Mimikyu, and Shovel Knight are deconfirmed Geno is really the only character left that placed high on polls for inclusion since Brawl that hasn't been addressed. It really does feel like it's not going to be long until Geno is addressed one way or another whether it be as playable or as an AT. I would put money on us having a clear answer by the next direct in either October or November.

Also I haven't gone back and looked as to whether this was addressed in this thread, but I saw an intriguing thread on reddit I wanted to share:

That does make sense. Many though it was for someone like Elma, but why would you need the toy when you already have 3D models. Geno has never been 3D, so it fits.

I don't think ANYONE thought Chrom was going to be unique.

But in a way he sort of is.

No other Echo is a mixture of two characters like Chrom.

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE DIRECT!! I'm a bit bummed about Ashley, but everything else blew me out of the water. I'm gonna parrot what everyone else is saying; but I really believe today's direct gives even more hope to Geno. Aside from the deconfirmations, all the characters revealed are highly requested ones. We've got two out of three of the holy trinity. Now it's just a matter of time waiting for Geno's reveal. I believe!

Ooh, that makes a ton of sense. Given how Sakurai incorporated a sort of sumo/wrestling feel for K. Rool, he might be thinking of a Gundam-style transformable robot angle for Geno, which would suit him perfectly. I can't think of a single other thing he'd use that figure for, unless he's working on a non-Smash project too, which I doubt given all the effort toward Smash. Xenoblade doesn't seem likely either, considering there's already a ton of stuff he can simply import from those games.

It has been stated that there has been no real plans for DLC yet, or at least I think.

Also, does it feel like Sakurai is treading a bit of old ground with a lot of things in Smash. And I don't mean the characters, but past concepts. Ditto was a Pokemon planned in a previous Smash(Melee, I think), and now it's here. Same goes for Sukapon, as he was going to be an item for Melee. What I am saying is that Sakurai seems to be easing past regrets, things he wanted to do but could not for whatever reason, and if this idea is true, that helps Geno a lot.

Yeah, I've seen a comparison (I don't have the link rn) and they are definitely moving the characters around to make room for the new ones. And given that Geno is not that big, they can put him in without a sweat.

This. You are absolutely right! As soon as I saw Ditto, I was sold that Sakurai was doing everything to make this Smash the absolute pinnacle of the current series formula. This one is going to be everything everybody wants, including Sakurai. No ideas will be unused.

Maybe it should be "everything is here."

Yeah, Ashley stung for me and a lot of others. But with Shovel Knight as an assist, my hopes for Shantae has skyrocketed. I don't really see assists in a negative light, and I trust that Sakurai knows what is best for any character that comes into his hands.

I have to disagree with your logic here. DLC characters are pretty expensive, like 1/8th of the price of the game. The obscure characters should be in the base game, recognisable characters as DLC. Geno is technically a third party rep too, and we got 3 third parties last time. Also Corrin is as obscure a character you can get and he was DLC last time.

I think Geno has a good shot either way. I think he might be the last revealed new character in November.

Yeah I agree. Corrin is a bit different though, it was more posterchild for the latest FE so it's something that was probably more appealing for a younger crowd rather than something really retro obscure.

Actually I'm pretty sure I already know what the mecha figure was about. the key thing everyone forgets in reference to that toy is that Sakurai said he SPECIFICALLY bought it for the gun. meaning the mecha doesn't even matter for his work.
So we need to really focus on what he needs a gun for.

well I think what is likely the use for it is using along with typical modeling figurines to figure out how a character would move while holding a gun.

what character would fight while holding a gun at all times? OH WAIT.... Inkling! So yeah that is my theory on the mecha figurine. it's not actually a clue for an unknouwn character because it was used for something we have already seen.

I have the distinct feeling that Geno support is going to grow a ton from here, and I am already seeing some new faces. With the mass upheaval that resulted from this direct, especially the confirmation of K.Rool, a lot of people are going to shift around and Geno is a character I see profiting a ton from this. I just realized something. Sakurai pulled out the mother load and revealed a gaming icon and long time fan requested character like it was nothing. In a direct. And there is still more... My point is that if Sakurai is willing to go this big in an August direct, what does he have planned for the future. He can't just pull out small or dull picked, he has to pull out show stoppers. Her has set a huge precedent for big reveals.

Boys and girls... after that direct... I'm CERTAIN that Geno is next. The fact that we got two big characters in Simon and K. Rool (Dark Samus and Chrom were big too and he emphasized that they were extremely popular) I'm positive Geno is coming.

Also, as a follow up to one of my last posts... I was right... tears were a flowing when K. Rool got announced. Hearing that Gangplank Galleon music brought me back to when my dad and mom would play that for me.

You guys are forgetting one major thing for September, the general direct. And general directs have revealed Smash newcomers before. I think Geno will be the next one revealed and Bandana Dee, Elma, and Decidueye (I still don't believe Vergeben fully as Isabelle has yet to show up).
