Luck is nice to have on your side, but I think it was due to the ballot. The fact that she got an icon and Risky is icing on the cake. And if that's the case, that could be an a indication that Geno also did good in the ballot, as he got rather similar treatment(An extra spirit from the same series and an icon). Besides Sakurai's word on it, of course.Shantae was lucky to become a spirit.

Also, the RTC is currently rating Geno and Sora, so go on over if you want.
His vids are based on the rules of this thread, so there is definitely similarities. It's just that anyone can do Billy does in his videos there, so there is more variety in views and opinion.RTC?
Nvm, I figured it out. Hopefully it's better than Billybo's stuff, but I'm assuming it's more of the same.
Yeah I've never really understood the point of it past saying who you want and don't want. That is completely fine. His vids are based on the rules of this thread, so there is definitely similarities. I can understand that, especially since it's not really being used as percentages typically are. It's not like all of the character's you rate will get together to be that 100 percent. I get trying to give some simple answer that will be combined, but it feels like there could have been a better way.Yeah I've never really understood the point of it past saying who you want and don't want. When it gets to who you think might happen or who you think won't, that's also fine, but once you put a number by it I become irked for some reason. I know it's just a number to represent how likely you think a character is, but in all honesty I look at numbers as more absolute. Since there are very few people in the world with the knowledge of who is and isn't in, for me it makes more sense to say you think they will happen, won't happen, or could happen. Putting on a number to say how likely you think they are doesn't make much sense to me...
But I do have a case of the Bergs, so forgive me if that makes absolutely no sense.

I’m pretty sure she was a spirit because of the ballot. shes like the most requested female character. If there wasent much requests from her then she would be lucky. And the ballot is also why shovel knight appeared as an assist trophy.Shantae was lucky to become a spirit.

Yeah, definitely, the only reason she was given the time of day is because of the ballot. That doesn't mean she wasn't lucky that when Sakurai saw a western indie with no observable Japanese demand, who very possibly didn't crack the top ten and was almost certainly outclassed by a different western indie who also had no observable Japanese demand, he still decided to include her. Even Shovel Knight was lucky to make it.I’m pretty sure she was a spirit because of the ballot. shes like the most requested female character. If his only goal was to troll the Smash fanbase, he got exactly what he wanted and more than he could ever dreamed. The Grinch hoax will probably be the lowest point for the fanbase in Smash history. All the yelling/arguing/debates amongest fans, how the insiders vs non-insiders conflict hit critical mass, how a company was harassed by fans, all ending with a lackluster and fizzled final Direct.Honestly? I feel the guy faked the mural using one of the old BG's, did a bit of bad work(as it tried to move things instead of using the actual clean background itself), and then went out of their way to make it believable by using the Grinch stuff. It's a photoshop job. It's remotely possible they could've seen the Ken part at one point, and put him in the same spot, sure. People see real leaks more than often enough. But it was obviously faked. There's way too much making it unrealistic. Never mind people will gladly go out of their way to troll fanbases. It's not exactly unusual with what jerks exist.
Everyone's a never-ever until they were always possible.ForsakenM Almost everyone is a "meme pick" until they actually happen or credible leakers imply they're going to happen. I've been here long enough to know that most characters after Brawl were not respected or taken seriously and you can probably count on one hand that were. Pretty much every female character since ZSS has been accused of being "waifu trash." Pit was probably the last "retro" character that was decently respected by the Smash fanbase before they got in. Characters like Ridley and Chrom (ironically, "a sure thing" until Robin was confirmed and then they traded places) were dunked on until the day they were confirmed. Third party wise, MegaMan and Sonic are probably the only ones that the Smash fanbase didn't immediately dismiss before they got in or a leaker said they were going to happen. Of course, people always take a "I knew it all along" approach when it happens so, all in all, don't let it bother too much because it doesn't mean anything.
It blows my mind how many people said certain leakers had no credibility because Ridley and K. Rool were "easy guesses". Both of them (but especially Ridley) were **** on constantly for a decade and were anything but locks.ForsakenM Of course, people always take a "I knew it all along" approach when it happens so, all in all, don't let it bother too much because it doesn't mean anything.
Yup, it is almost time. If the costume does not return, which I personally don't think it will, all HELL is gonna break loose! And I cannot wait for that!Don't know if anyone mentioned this, but the Smash YouTube channel uploaded a private video a while ago. It's incredibly likely that it's Hero's showcase. The wait is almost over!
Thanks for making me re-buy my geno costume consolation prize, nintendo!Yup, it is almost time. If the costume does not return, which I personally don't think it will, all HELL is gonna break loose! And I cannot wait for that!
Not everyone has the time (or the desire) to do serious research. At the end of the day, it's his youtube channel and a not serious subject, I don't see the problem. Would you say the same things if he was a Geno fan boy ?Yeah it's all good, I'm just really weird.
Most of my irritation with Billybo was that he would dig like half-way into whatever he was talking about, but he always seemed to either be behind in information or not fully informed. Thus his videos would always favor one character over another for a reason that had information that could go against it and it irked me.
That leak still scares me to think about. The implications of it are pretty horrible... when it came out, it looked so incredibly hard to fake that it was plausible to believe. Even I did. Then Incineroar was announced, and well... the implications of it still really bother me. Those were photos of a banner that would have been very expensive to produce. It would have been reasonable for most people to believe that banner was real given that -- if people are willing to go out of their way to the point where they're willing to pay hundreds of dollars to produce credible evidence to fool people, how can any evidence be trusted?Whoever made the Grinch leak clearly was either the poster of the Chandondorf leak or based it off that. Judging by how the Chandondorf leaker talked, it seems like that banner was commissioned out of malice.
I think calling the first three FP characters "third party juggernauts" is a bit inaccurate. Joker might be able to fall into that category but the other two not so much. Hero is an avatar for the Dragon Quest series as a whole, and even though he might have some popularity in Japan, he would hardly be considered a "juggernaut" in the west. Then we have B-K. B-K may be third party, but the franchise as a whole has been irrelevant for over a decade without any future releases in sight. That said, B-K was a MASSIVELY requested character and a perfect example of fan wish fulfillment. Why do you think we Geno fans are more optimistic than ever? Because B-K proves that no obstacle is too great for a character to get in as long as enough love and support are there to back them up. Now that pretty much every other major fan requested character has been added to the game, there is hopefully little to nothing to stand in Geno's way.Geno's chances are basically non-existent, the first three characters of the fighter pass are third party juggernauts.
Sure Nintendo is always ****ing up their last reveals but they're not that dumb. You can bet on huge third party characters.

And ironically, Geno is third party. So even if what you say is true and Nintendo only plans to put in "third party juggernauts", guess what? HE'S A THIRD PARTY JUGGERNAUT, BABY!
I honestly think the whole reason why Sakurai went out of his way to discuss the Vifam figure was him dropping a tease for the spirit board. Although he didnt use the exact model he could have been thinking at the time what it could look like.Reminder that the Vifam rifle could've been used for a non-playable character, like an AT or something. Not saying it was, but it could've been.
After this Fighter Pass, I think it'll be about time to drop the Vifam figure from speculation entirely, honestly. We're rapidly approaching the point where it'll be way too outdated to have any bearing on the current situation whatsoever. We're probably the only ones who still remember that old thing, to be honest.
Yes...In Japan. We cannot discard that Dragon Quest is indeed huge...in Japan. They have a pretty big following for what is considered a LEGENDARY series...in Japan.DQ is definitely "juggernaut".
Exactly. I suspect we'll see something similar to when Marth and Roy were added to Melee. Prior to their inclusion, Fire Emblem was pretty much unheard of in the west. After their inclusion, the franchise exploded in popularity and is now one of Nintendo's biggest IPs. Once Hero hits smash, it will be a fairly safe bet that DQ will gain the same universal appeal.Yes...In Japan. We cannot discard that Dragon Quest is indeed huge...in Japan. However, I feel this will change when they hit Smash and people open up to this 'juggernaut'...from Japan.
I mean, I wouldn't say that Dragon Quest itself isn't a big deal, but no single character in that franchise is as noteworthy or as recognizable as Samus Aran. Even the complete non-gamers I know at least know her as "Metroid" or "that robot guy from Metroid". If you were to show a picture of Erdrick to someone who'd never played DQ, they'd probably guess it was a random Dragon Ball Z character. Heck, I didn't have any clue who Erdrick was until the leaks started talking about him and I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one.People treat Metroid like a huge and important series all the time despite it being non-existent in Japan.
I don't see a problem with calling Dragon Quest a big deal.
Erdrick is far more popular in Japan than Samus is in any region. Dude's in all kinds of symbolism, even outside of video games. DQ's caused drops in productivity nationwide and spawned its own holiday at this point. I'd say that's pretty darn noteworthy, even if not in the West.I mean, I wouldn't say that Dragon Quest itself isn't a big deal, but no single character in that franchise is as noteworthy or as recognizable as Samus Aran. Well, I'm ride or die anyways so, even if the costume comes back, I'm seeing this through to the end. I think people should allow us that much. If fans were still allowed to hope for Ridley and Chrom after Sakurai himself basically dumped on them, we can still show support after a costume port. What if the figure was going to be used for Geno DLC but Nintendo dropped the fighter's pass on Sakurai? That way, Geno could still be individual DLC after the pass is over.
Holy crap, seriously? A video game got its own holiday??? That's legit unhealthy imo, but dang. Still though, that only reinforces the point that DQ is predominantly a Japanese thing as far as "juggernauts" are concerned. And again, I don't think anyone is questioning the overall impact of the franchise as a whole, but rather the notoriety of any one character within it. I guess the real question here is whether smash picks are more influenced by Japanese culture or by consumer demand. The decision is ultimately that of Sakurai and the Nintendo execs, but I would be interested to know what sways them the most.Erdrick is far more popular in Japan than Samus is in any region. Right, but the point being made here was that Samus is more recognizable worldwide than any singular DQ character, which I would argue is true and after the release of Prime 4, will stay true since Hero in Smash will only push sales so much and the West is REALLY looking forward to a new Metroid game.Erdrick is far more popular in Japan than Samus is in any region. I feel like it's more of an opposite milhouse situation, where geno is not a meme, but "geno is a meme" is a memeCan I just say that, even in the years I didn't get Geno's popularity, I NEVER understood the idea of calling him a meme pick?
The West may recognize Samus, but they sure as hell don’t care about Metroid enough to actually buy the damn games. Only the original and Metroid Prime even managed to break 2 million copies sold, and Prime Hunters, Zero Mission, Samus Returns, and the Metroid Prime Trilogy have been outsold by Dragon Quest titles in the West like VIII and IX. I’d argue she’s largely as recognizable as she is because of Smash, memes (Metroid can’t crawl), and a general need for certain Nintendo fans to almost virtue signal their “hardcore” gaming beliefs.Right, but the point being made here was that Samus is more recognizable worldwide than any singular DQ character, which I would argue is true and after the release of Prime 4, will stay true since Hero in Smash will only push sales so much and the West is REALLY looking forward to a new Metroid game.
DQ in Japan - We know who they are!
Metroid in Japan - Eh, we might know.
DQ in the West - Umm, who are these guys? Is this a new DBZ game or anime?
Metroid anywhere but Japan - Oh this is Metroid, a game that helped define the Metroidvania genre alongside Castlevania.
Post alert!
I have two bigger posts coming: one is about two things that people some so sure of that I really can't understand why, and the other is what I would improve upon SMRPG. The latter will be a much bigger post and I meant to do this directly after playing the game while my mind was clear and the whole game was fresh, so I may end up playing through it again before I post it.
And Alphadream (a company at least partially founded by SMRPG Devs) have had a mysterious project in the works for years (And in recent years they've been doing remakes).Something I've been thinking about is that interview that came out after K. Rool was put in the game, particularly this section:
"To shed further light, per Hyle, per his sources (Mr. Throat or otherwise), K. Rool's hiatus boiled down to "internal apathy and factional disagreements." I have since been able to independently confirm through two sources that one of the parties that wanted to bring back K. Rool sooner was none other than Retro Studios. They were interested in putting K. Rool in the Tropical Freeze Switch port in some capacity, but were denied with no reasoning given. This reportedly was because after the ballot Sakurai had personally called dibs on reviving the character himself."
This is the power Sakurai has to get characters into Smash. He literally told the DK team that they couldn't use their own main villain. He can get anyone he wants into this game outside of probably Disney owned characters. And even that I wouldn't give a hard no to the possibility of. That's how much pull he has and how respected he is. This is a man on record several times of wanting Geno to be playable in the game.
An interesting thing to remember is Geno was suspiciously absent from the Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga remake that came out recently. This is especially weird considering Geno has much more of a presence with Nintendo now than he did when M&L:SS originally came out. He's been used as a mii costume (where they even used SMRPG music in his reveal), spirit, and online icon choice during the same time period as this remake. Not to mention Nintendo's Team Geno/Team Mallow post from last year as well as him being discussed internally at NoA in recent times. And there was even the quiz question about him on the Nintendo sponsored HQ quiz.
I'm not claiming this means he's planned for sure, but it sure as hell is a bunch of weird interesting coincidences.
