So I thought maybe I'd start a thread so we could all talk about it

this isn't to whine at the people who worked very hard to get the stream up today, amongst a whole bunch of problems.

this is just a thread to let them know that yes, a lot of that was pretty unwatchable, and there was no sound. this is a thread to plead with them to try super hard to see if we can't get tomorrow's stream to be closer to brawl's (it was really good quality and they had overlays saying who's playing and the stock count and commentary, cmon guys we cant let the brawlers make us look bad).

just a thought, maybe we don't need 3 cameras? maybe just like one camera with melee and some commemtary?

Perfect! We honestly don't need 3 screens. A screen only showing Melee is fine, sound with or without commentary would be nice. What else...oh yeah, the lag was horrible, half the time it would just freeze for a while, especially at the beginning of crews.

Hopefully it's better tomorrow, and if not, that's fine :)

I thought there was also USA vs The World...is that being streamed tonight?

no that's happening tomorrow.

and yeah obviously the most important thing is little lag so that it's viewable. sound and commentary are nice treats.

i think the important thing tomorrow is to set up the stream early and stream a lot of test matches (pools, friendlies, mm, whatever) until we're sure its working. then start crews

apparently one of the big problems was when both streams were running at once, the quality would crap out. so maybe we need some event timing so that we only have one streamable thing going on at a time

Why is the brawl stream better? Aren't they in the same venue and using the same Internet and same hosti sites?

I think maybe there needs to be another thread started to CONSTRUCTIVELY address this general problem of a stream not being considered important. If this game wants to keep its fanbase people really need to stop being solipsistic about it. I'm not kidding; look at other games. They make melee streams look like a joke. Yes, maybe the venue wasn't good for streaming, but shouldn't that basic capability be a prerequisite for any video game tournament? These grievous planning errors really killed the hype for this tournament and work against the greater interests of the melee community.

A stream isn't that complicated to run... Esp if you want just the gameplay and the commentary, all you need is recording equipment, a mic, oh and.... internet. Add another camera in there to have video of the competitors/the crowd. It would have taken the G2 TO's one trip down to the venue to do a speedtest to find out if there is internet and if its suitable for streaming.

The brawl tournament had professionals from Video Game Boot Camp to setup their stream. I think the melee tournament stream was just setup by volunteers who had time and was willing to contribute.

The stream was pretty bad but at least the community has people willing to sacrifice lots of time to try to figure things out and get something up.

Overall, it was pretty disappointing but no one is to blame.

Genesis DBR: "After some negotiations, the #genesis2 venue management decided to hook us up with some high speed internet! CAN YOU SAY LIVESTREAM!?"

How is it no one to blame? DBR promised a stream and it didn't happen. And what is the difference between a "professional" stream and a non-professional one? As far as I know no one gets paid good money to stream video games even in the SF community and all streams are more or less done by volunteers that either know or don't know what they're doing.

Okay, perhaps it is partially DBR's fault. I'm slightly confused by this as people had to use their own cell phones to get internet access. Where was this "high speed internet?"
Unless it was just a cell phone with 4G data provided by the venue management >_>. (with a bandwidth cap that they clearly didn't take into consideration)

The professionalism demonstrates itself when we could see the brawl stream on in a more consistent manner than the melee stream. They might not get paid but i'm pretty sure VGBC is a sponsor or a partner in someway with genesis 2 as they were in other tournaments. If anything their credibility is on the line as a company so they don't want to screw it up. The melee stream was just some guy who knew how to stream and had all the basic equipments: capture card, laptop with software, and cell phone with 4G data to tether to the laptop to allow internet access.

Jun I'd hardly say that was a promise haha. From what I've gathered from talking with Boback the progression went something like this.

At first they told us there would be absolutely no internet access.
Boback found out that there was in fact some sort of "high speed" service at the fairgrounds, but wasn't accessible.
After a lot of negotiating, Boback got venue management to agree to let us use it. (Insert Hype)
A while later he managed to test it (not at the venue, but at the fairgrounds I believe)
Here's that speed test http://www.speedtest.net/result/1335783652.png
I think around this point DBR went to complain to management about the speeds and they said they'd fix it. They didn't.
Then it turned out that internet wasn't even accessible from the venue.

I don't know all the details, but from it sounds like DBR really tried everything in their power to get internet access up and running. Sh*t just hit the fan, and instead of killing all the hype and ditching the stream, I think they thought it'd be better if they could just try to deliver to the best of their ability.

People shouldn't hate on DBR, they tried their hardest. That being said, having streams really helps the community, generates hype, and lets people who can't be there feel involved. It's a huge disappointment to have a room full of screaming gamers lose their feed right as losers finals/semi's are about to begin, and it ends up reflecting poorly on the community as a whole. Maybe we should ask VGBC to help out next time.

Unfortunately it had nothing to do with who was running the stream. The problem was there was just straight up no internet connection. While I think VGBC is great, unless they brought a couple of 4G laptop sticks, the stream wouldn't have been any better.

I have to admit even though the lack of a (high quality) stream killed the hype of the tournament, the presence of at least a low quality stream was great and props to DBR for being able to organize something like that despite the odds. Anyone who's hosting a major tourney plz let this be a lesson and if you want to stream something, make sure you find a venue that is appropriate.

I think this is what basically happened. We(VGBC) were told there was internet at the venue. We agreed to do the stream(for Brawl, they didn't want us doing Melee) for free since we planned on attending the event anyways to enter. A week before the tournament Sidefx told me the internet was not working and that the venue wasn't really helping in getting it back up despite SideFX constantly calling them, etc. Bionic from VGBC even created the stream page for DBR's site(http://www.genesisdbr.com/stream)
"Strong Bad" and I think "AzN_Lep" provided phones with 4G service so we could stream. If it wasn't for them it wouldn't of happened. We (VGBC) did the best we could with what was provided to us.

that makes a lot of sense. I like to think that we as a community are always moving forward. in light of pound 5, we learned to be smarter with how we organized pool money and venue fees. perhaps in light of G2, we as a community (but specifically the TO's) can learn to lay out money as part of the venue fee for wireless tethers that they know will work. And also in the future, I think the melee community should embrace VGBC, they do great work.
