So we need a better name for this tournament.

Whoever comes up with a winning name for these monthlies gets their venue fee paid for by me. I swear!

Anyways, I know it's a little soon, but I have the next event up now, and it will be roughly the same format, but I'm going to work on the space issue as well as the time problem we had with Brawl.

Where:

Gamelot

7007 Bandera Rd
San Antonio, TX
(At Bandera and Huebner on the corner with the Church's Chicken.)
210-684-0101

Events:
Doors open at 12:00 pm. You may register as soon as you get there. The first event will begin at 2:00 pm. (Again, 210-684-0101, if you are running late.)

Soul Calibur IV................................................ ..........................2:00 pm
Brawl (Singles)......................................... .................................3:00pm
Melee (Singles)......................................... .................................4:00pm

Entry Fees:

Venue Fee: $5 for a wristband. You will need this to be allowed into the tournament area.

Each game will be $10.00 to enter.

Prize Layout:
All events will pay out as such:

1st: 60%
2nd: 25% ;)
3rd: 15% :lick:

WE NEED CONSOLES AND COPIES OF THE GAMES. IF YOU CAN BRING AN EXTRA TV, THAT TOO IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I will try to bring a VCR to record matches, but it will be up to someone else to upload them. Bring a VHS tape too.

Rules:

Soul Calibur IV

There will be both Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles available. If both players wish to play their match on Xbox 360, that is fine. However, PS3 is the nationals standard, therefore it will have priority when two players argue over what machine to play on. (Besides, it's no secret the 360 controller just plain isn't that good for fighting games)

Banned Characters:
Guest Characters, Custom characters (Color/costume edits are still allowed), and Yoda/Darth Vader are banned from use in the tournament.

Double Elimination
Rounds: 3/5
Best 2/3 matches
Finals (Winners, Losers) will be best 3/5 matches
Grand Finals are best 4/7 matches

First match can opt for a blind pick, first stage is random.
Winner stays character.
Loser can change character and pick a stage if he/she desires.

Any infinites, such as Ivy's rising B, Astaroth's sidestep B,
and Algol's gun juggle are banned. If these tactics are used, i.e., two Ivy rising B's are used consecutively are used in a combo, the rule breaker will immediately lose that round.

Brawl Singles

Double Elimination
Matches will be best 2 of 3.
Finals will be best 3 of 5.

Neutral Random stages:
Battlefield
Smashville
Yoshi's Island
Final Destination

Counter Pick:
Delfino Plaza
Corneria (Melee)
Great Sea
Rainbow Ride
Frigate Orpheon
Battleship Halberd
Pokemon Stadium 2
Castle Siege
Brinstar (Melee)
Pokemon Stadium
Lylat Cruise

Everything else is banned.

No items.
Time Limit: 7 minutes
3 stock
At the beginning of a match players can opt for a double blind pick.

Each player can strike one non random stage.

At the start of the first round, each player can use one random reset.

After the first round the loser picks the stage, the winner decides what character he will play and then the loser will pick their character and the next round will begin.

Stall tactics such as..... whatever they are at the current moment.... are banned, unless they are for recovery purposes.

Melee Singles

Double Elimination
Matches will be best 2 of 3.
Finals and Semifinals will best 4 of 7.
Random stages: Final Destination, Pokemon Stadium, Dreamland 64, Fountain of Dreams, Battlefield, and Yoshi's Story
Banned stages: Yoshi's Island (Pipes), Fourside, Onett, Hyrule Temple, Flatzone, Brinstar Depths, Icicle Mountain, Big Blue, Mushroom Kingdom 1 and 2, Venom, Yoshi's Island 64, Peach's Castle, Kongo Jungle, Jungle Japes, Great Bay, Poke Floats (However, any stage is open, as long as both players agree to it)
No items.
Time Limit: 7 minutes
4 stock
At the beginning of a match players can opt for a double blind pick.

Each player can strike one non random stage.

At the start of the first round, each player can use one random reset.

After the first round the loser picks the stage, the winner decides what character he will play and then the loser will pick their character and the next round will begin.

Kyle, would it be possible to know ahead of time how your setting up the tourny? I remember at FinalSmash4, we had brawl in the closet and melee in the big room more inside the store. It was a little crowded, but it still ran smoothly and not much chaos. Last saturday's tourny was the most crowded one ive ever seen at gamelot. 3 tournys in the closet? And you had the host table in the very far corner so every time someone wanted to ask you something, they fought the entire crowd.

I really hope cliff allows you to set it up the other way. smash in one room, sc4 in the other. It'll make things 6809347634 times easier for you and all bystanders. Maybe if you can somehow do this, when your sc4 tourny ends, we can move melee to the closet. And have an easy, smooth set-up for doubles on both games maybe?

Im probably dreaming.

I'm going to at least fight for the second room we had at FS4. Trust me, I wish we had it like FS3. But Cliff likes to keep rearranging his store a lot. If you're in at Gamelot sometime, do everyone a favor and help to stress these issues to Cliff, because I've tried before, to little avail.

With the second room, I'd have the current tournament running in the back, with other games running in the front. I'd probably have Soul Calibur running the front, due the smaller number of set ups we need. Brawl needs to have the closet to itself, since it will get the most people.

****...I won't be at this one. That's the same day as the Texas vs. OU game and I don't miss that for anything. I'm still down for games in the meantime. I won't pass up a chance to get better.

I'll let your comment slide... LOL!

It's Texas vs. OU. It's a big game every year regardless of the rankings.

I always take the Friday off before the annual showdown just to get myself ready...and in case I'm lucky enough to get tickets...in which case, I'll have to make the trip to Dallas.

Seems the 11th isn't good for a number of people..... though to be honest I really can't say it bums me because of the high attendance. I want a manageable number of people for my next tournament.

I recalled hearing Cliff say something about having a Yugioh and Pokemon TCG Tournament in the store as we were doing our little tournaments in the closet, which is why we were in there in the first place.

Before this tournament, the last one I went to was FS3 I think, and it was BEAUTIFUL. So much space was nice and roomy.

I'll be sure to come to this one, and I hope I'll do just as good with Sonic as I did last time, and I pray that me playing Sonic as a shock value wasn't the decider in my matches...

KM, there should be teams...totally.

Kyle: i will do what i can about the PS3 situation. However, on your end we need to know if you can GUARANTEE the space for it. Because if so, i can almost nail 8 more guys for this tournament. making it about 30+ participants :)

I'll get back to you on that. If things go well, I will have the front room dedicated to Soul Calibur.

I'm also considering changes in the game lineup, but I'm really not so sure. I just want to see if I can pull off these 3 games first in a more reasonable manner. Like I don't think I want to run Melee until Soul Calibur is completed, and probably will have Melee going on in the front room.

And I'm going to say this now so no one is surprised. I REALLY don't feel like doing Brawl for my November tournament. I'm just sick of the game and how long it takes to run, plus the lack of setups and the kids that kept asking me how long it would be until their next match (I DON'T ****ING KNOW DAMMMIT!)

But don't worry Melee fans. I still have love for it and I happen to now have two gamecubes and two copies of Melee, so add a few more and a Melee tournament becomes a snap.

Brawl, to me, has become the 800 pound gorilla in the room and it's just not welcome if I want to do other things. And I don't even enjoy watching the game. So I'm making it clear, I need a break from the Brawl scene.

Lame.

And here I was, hoping to come to all the bi-monthlies for something. Oh well.

Whenever Brawl isn't there, I expect GG god **** it...

Dude, to be honest, your tournament was possibly the worst run I've ever seen. At least one TV was always open and you would disappear for long periods of time to play games instead of host your event. Also, it was ridiculously crowded, hot, and Cliff refused to let me bring in a drink even though his minimum CC purchase is $10 and I didn't have any cash on me. I didn't plan on coming back to your next tournament (and neither did anyone else that was good), so if you want to remove Brawl you should probably just do it now anyways.

Well let's see.....

I can't tell which tvs are free if people don't report their matches swiftly, I can't always see if tvs are free because people started playing friendlies, yes I know it was crowded, and I can't really do anything about that, I thought that Brawl would have less people because I wasn't hyping this to other cities. Also, I had an incredible lack of setups.

It took a long time because people didn't come for their matches (thank goodness I was dq'ing people).

As for me playing games, I only entered Melee, and I only played my matches and nothing else. It was the only games I played for the entire day. If I was outside the tournament area, it was to talk with Cliff.

Kyle: Your reasons for not wanting to to brawl isn't sufficient enough for anyone, not even me bro. Coming from the experience that i have ran/competed tournies, that isn't the worst, trust me. Look, basic numbers were as follows:

SC4: about 24
Brawl/melee: around 50.

Cramming 70 people in that room wasn't too comfortable, but coming from a tournament that had just about that many people combined in a smaller space wasn't REAL comfortable either.

LeeHarris:

Key facts:
Kyle isn't in the control of the room he is given permission to use (out of his control)
Soul Calibur 4 only had 2 PS3's to work with. and with 20+ people, that really isn't fun. (out of kyle's control)
Someone took off with their Wii during the tournaments, therefore slowing things down. (out of kyle's control)
2 Million people kept asking questions (ok not really 2 million, but you get my point)

Now before you come off and say "WTF did you there?", imma say that i Ran SC4. and even tho there was 1 mishap that happened, it got fixed. This was my first tournament that i ran in months. If Kyle gave me permission to run his tournament(s), then it would've been a little smother. But Heero helped out. Kyle didn't realize that SC4 got such a nice turnout, therefore it lead to an almost difficult situation.

So, basically if you (not directing to you lee) keep asking kyle questions, don't you realize that he has to stop what he's doing just to answer your question...and then do it over and over and over again. Just like that kid that kept asking him "do you have an estimate time of when I will be playing??" I had to become a **** and be like "30 ****in minutes...STFU" and he looked at me funny. he's lucky i'm a nice guy.

Moving on,

Kyle, that comment was irrelevant about not doing brawl. Period. You need to talk to cliff about running tournaments there with the bigger space.

Everyone Else, just bear with him for the time being. That was the 1st Monthly that we've had so far...all we can do is move on and move foward. And to the rest of you kids....stop dwelling in the past.

EDIT: Also, space out the tournaments some....running them an hr apart doesn't help. ESPECIALLY if you know you don't have the space for it.

Space was a little crammed, but I overall didn't mind. I was just happy to play Brawl.

Take that away, and I have no reason to go. It makes me a little sad :(

Please re-consider Kyle, not now, but soon.

I have good news peeps.

The extra space I had at FS 4 will be available. I just got off the phone with Cliff.

And yes, ChickenWing makes an excellent point about me having to answer a million questions. This is probably the most difficult and time consuming part of the tournament organizer's job.

(Oh and to clarify, it wasn't Soul Calibur's turnout that surprised me, although it was a little better than I thought it would be, it was Brawl because I didn't hype this tournament out to anyone outside of San Antonio. The majority of the players were local.)

The tournaments will be spaced apart better now.

I think I'm going to get Soul Calibur IV done first before I start Melee. Brawl and Soul Calibur IV don't really have anyone over lapping, so I'm going to start running Brawl during the Soul Calibur finals.

Oh and the next tournament will be early November. Date soon.

Sounds good Kyle, good ****.

Out of curiousity, what other fighting games were a possibility?

All I know that I've seen played are Melee, Brawl, KoF, SC4, Guilty Gear, and 3rd Strike. Would any of those be present anytime in the future?

I'm mainly considering 3rd Strike and Marvel. Tekken 5DR (or 6 whenever that hits the states) is also a possibility since Tekken and Soul Calibur IV share players, and they're both on the PS3.

Guilty Gear isn't very popular, but I like it, and it doesn't hurt for me to add that as well. I just wouldn't have it if it was less than 7-8 people signed up.

You should consider Def Jam Vendetta: Fight for NY. That game is deeper than Barlw, but also allows for doubles, and characters like Snoop Dog, Ice T and Sean Paul. Definitely tournament viable.

You play Guilty Gear?

We should play some time, I'm just getting into it. Baiken is so awesome.

Well Kyle, if you ever need help with any tournaments, I'd be more than happy to oblige, just give me a heads up beforehand.

Kyle: If the November tourney is on either November 1 or 15, I will not only be there, but I will run the Brawl tournament for you. I'll just need help with seeding and bracket setup. After that, just let me work.

Fair warning...I'm very strict about people showing up to their match unless they're in another tourney.

Nicely done and much appreciated. But I can't say that I'm the host by letting you do everything. But yes, once I have the bracket ready to go, it's simple enough to run. As it was said earlier, I get asked a lot of questions, and because of that I move in and out of the desk a lot. I'm more comfortable on the floor than at a desk, so many thanks JC.

Oh and Chickenwing, if you really want, I can leave the majority of Soul Calibur to you. I mean that's basically what you did last time. And thanks for helping me hype this stuff up, much love you have for your community sir.

BTW Games I play........

3rd Strike (Elena, Ken, a little of Chun and Alex)
Guilty Gear Accent Core (Robo Ky for life, Slayer, Faust and Anji)
Melee (Peach/Gannondorf)
Brawl if I ever feel like it (SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!)

Games I'm scrubtacular at:

Marvel vs Capcom 2: Team Doom/Strider and Rouge cuz I like her lol
Tekken: Ganryu and Asuka cuz she plays like Jun
Any King of Fighters game
CvS2: Cammy/Blanka/Sagat
Soul Calibur IV: Astaroth rawr! (well I'm actually trying to learn this game)

It took a long time because people didn't come for their matches (thank goodness I was dq'ing people).
I don't doubt that it wasn't all your fault, but you definitely could have kept an eye out because many TVs were open with not even friendlies for at least 30 minutes. I also saw people play, go report their matches, then the TV would be open for a long time so it can't all be their fault.

Also, it is your job to bug the crap out of people to bring setups and to also try and provide. When Xyro runs his tournaments, he spams the thread asking people to bring them and he gets like 15-20 setups per tournament. There were even like 4 dudes there who didn't bring controllers bc they had no idea (my guess is they found out through Gamelot).

Either way, running those 3 events at once is probably what caused the nightmare. Maybe you should get different people to run all events? The extra space helps too.

Pretty sweet. I'm a scrub when it comes to 3rd Strike, CvS2, KoF, and Soul Calibur, and a wee bit of Tekken (I used to play it, but not anymore, King ftw).

Either way, running those 3 events at once is probably what caused the nightmare. Maybe you should get different people to run all events? The extra space helps too.
That was the first thing I thought when I saw the spot the tournaments were gonna be at.

But yeah, extra space will definately help, and you've already got two people who'd be glad to help you.

It'll be all good.

Kyle, could you please set the Melee time limit to 8 minutes? That's the standard, and it discourages camping.
