My favorite is Muay Thai (Thailand)
I like it because of the actor Tony Jaa =), he is amazing IMO, since I also have a Thailander friend who recently moved here and he actually was kind of enough to show me few Muay Thai.

Tae Kwon Do also
I use to be in it. Was only 2nd degree green belt when I stopped because moved to another city

^ Ong Bak!!! *elbows random object*

I'm currently training in my favourite which is VOVINAM! a Vietnamese style of Martial arts.

It isn't well known, Vovinam takes alot from other styles like Judo, TKD, Karate and Muay-thai and incorporates the most useful and practical techniques so it's direct, quick and powerful. No flashy crap lol.

Makes use of Grappling/wrestling, elbows, knees, chokes and of course punch and kicks,.

Here's a vid of a couple Vovinam sparring knock-outs, not the best but w/e http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5HymwTFOC4&feature=related

Shorin Ryu. Okinawan self defense.

I enjoy it because it is not heavy into fancy kicks and such, since I have a spinal injury and my leg mobility is limited. I also enjoy the different take downs and such since I can rely on mostly upper body strength and using an opponents weight and momentum against them, without having to exert my leg muscles too much.

It also teaches you a lot about how to survive an encounter with someone that could easily overpower you. And how to break away if they do manage to forcefully restrain you. Something a rather tiny person like me would find very handy lol.

I enjoy working with my upper body and arms and hands more with martial arts anyway, even before I was injured.

I really hate taekwondo. Really horrible memories. While people were already punching and kicking I was still doing stances and what not. I did it for like 2 weeks before I quit because I couldnt do it... I remember why I wanted to join. My teacher said I had good character and I thought she said karate soooo........... yeah I was like 5 when she said that.

Anyone know about Jeet Kune Do?
I'm surprised no one has replied to this...HELL YEA!!

JKD is Awesome, Bruce Lee is Awesome and my martial art idol.
I really want to learn this style as well, it's very adaptive and has no limitations, patterns or predictability (which I believe is wrong with other martial arts). Although I've read that JKD is kinda a dying out...:urg:

Bruce Lee quote on his fighting style. Jeet Kune Do
http://www.fightingmaster.com/masters/brucelee/quotes.htm

I have not invented a "new style," composite, modified or otherwise that is set within distinct form as apart from "this" method or "that" method. On the contrary, I hope to free my followers from clinging to styles, patterns, or molds.

There is no mystery about my style. My movements are simple, direct and non-classical. The extraordinary part of it lies in its simplicity. Every movement in Jeet Kune-Do is being so of itself. There is nothing artificial about it. I always believe that the easy way is the right way. Jeet Kune-Do is simply the direct expression of one's feelings with the minimum of movements and energy. The closer to the true way of Kung Fu, the less wastage of expression there is.

Simple fact that truth exists outside all molds; pattern and awareness is never exclusive.
Again let me remind you Jeet Kune Do is just a name used, a boat to get one across, and once across it is to be discarded and not to be carried on one's back.

Kickboxing probably,
I like to beat people up,
But I hate doing forms so I dropped Karate,
All I want to do is fight. Not learn some silly dance.

Would fencing count as a martial art?
yes, i would say so. it's just the european equivalent to kendo.

i remember watching an exhibition bout on youtube of fencing vs kendo, haha. the spacing game was interesting. i forgot who won, i think fencing did.

as for the topic title... i like kung fu and muay thai. i never got into martial arts myself, but if i did, i'd definitely wanna do muay thai. it's very efficient and brutal. watching sagat in street fighter hahaha, it's like... "that's the only guy in sf whose attacks look like they would actually REALLY be painful irl."

kung fu is all about creativity. the people who invented it acknowledge that the human body was weak, so they imitated animals and nature in order to turn the human body into an efficient weapon. basically, it helped small guys take out big guys. i know a lot of the movements look weird, but it's truly the epitome of creativity in martial arts. there are styles based on different animals and it's sooo entertaining to see them all fleshed out.

however...

Lol my sensei believed forms and belts and all that stuff was BS, he hated it. But his partner advised him to include it to attract more people.

Then again my sensei disliked teaching in America anyway. He complained that american kids were less disciplined than Okinawan kids.

He still made things enjoyable though. Through the disdain and ridicule lol. He was a cool guy, I guess it was just funny that he was like that.

nice i like that

ya the reason i quit was that all the older people left (stupid YMCA raising the prices) so al the little kids were left and the only one left to spar with was the teacher....i mean it was fun and all but i want more people that are not 6 years old.......

If you get the opportunity, maybe look for a new dojo.

Hm I guess karate but I should do martial arts again with all the free time I have.
I was in Karate and was about 3 or 4 belts away from my black but I wound up quitting because I was moving. Between me and my brother I was the better student lol He just wanted to fight and punch, not kick. I remember he got mad because he went and got some food while they were passing out medals and he didn't know they called him. I think my old dojo was a bit of a rip off though..

Yes sir I do know about it. Isn't it the martial art that Bruce Lee invented? Or maybe I'm mixing it up with the martial art his master practiced....Either way, both are quite interesting martial arts which make good use of pressure points, leaverage, and joint manipulation.

My favorite martial art to watch would be TKD. I'm sorry, but while MMA fights are far more practical, it's not the prettiest nor the most exciting thing to watch.

My favorite martial art to practice would probably be a mix up between TKD and Muay Thai, with some boxing thrown in there for good measure.

Jeet Kune Do is not a particular style in general, just an adaptation of fighting knowledge to create an ultimate, or at least very effective self-invented style.

Same I can't watch MMA either, to calculating and baiting.
TKD s good to watch and compete, but not practical in a real fight when your opponent can perform a take down or get in ya face, given no room to kick. :(

Isn't it the martial art that Bruce Lee invented?
Yes sir, it is.

That sounds exactly like something Bruce Lee would do.
Lol, yeah. He figured out a lot of subtle things, like how the stance of the western boxing punch was superior to the Japanese Karate punch as far as power, speed, and torque are concerned. He took a bunch of ideas like this and created his own style.

But I think what he meant for "Jeet Kune Do" was not for people to copy his ideas, but that they should achieve the same kind of self-discovery through martial arts. You do have to be knowledgeable about fighting, but with your own innovations through practice, you will create something that's all your own. People have different bodies and abilities, so I think Lee meant for each person's Jeet Kune Do to be different.

I do Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Parkour, and Muy Thai. Though I have been trained in various others.
If anything, I can't say that I have a favorite Martial art, because simply. The only one I will favorite is my own. Jeet Kune Do, was my rough copy of what I wanted to do. I developed it into a personal philosophy of Kyodo - 'Art and Way of life'.

I train mentally, physically, and spiritually. And I live as what Kyodo is; just as Kyodo lives as I do.

Though there are very interesting MA out there. Such as Taekkyeon, Krav Maga, Savate, and Battojutsu.
To me Martial arts is more than being able to fight or defend, it is a way of life. It is a road of personal development and understanding. There is so much I want to say about it, but I would never have enough time to say it.

But, yeah, I will only favorite what I am. Because everything is flawed it is only when we can accept it and learn and adapt do we start the road of perfection.
Striving to perfect, yet understanding that we will never reach it.

Drunken Boxing. It is somewhat in efficant compared to the other Animal styles of Wushu.
But, it does require a lot of balance and creativity. It has great techniques to recover from falls or blows to major areas of the body.

I really hate taekwondo. Really horrible memories. While people were already punching and kicking I was still doing stances and what not. I did it for like 2 weeks before I quit because I couldnt do it... I remember why I wanted to join. Such a pity. Stances are very crucial in forming the right technique. It shows more than just being able to understand body fluency. It shows strength, precision, and adaptation.

Would fencing count as a martial art?
Wushu or Martial art, translates into 'The Fighting Arts'. Any form of combat can be considered a Martial art.
Most people do not recognize Parkour as a MA. Though, I do.

I'm surprised no one has replied to this...HELL YEA!!

Jeet Kune Do, The way of the intercepting fist. More of a philosophy, the original MMA. Or at least the outline of it. Implies that each person's fighting style is different. As such each different MA are unique and has there pro's and con's.

Fighting is not only being able to throw a punch or kick. It is an art and a way. A person must have the correct mindset to be a fighter. Fighting comes in three different sections. Mentality, Spiritually, and Physically.

Each person as follows JKD must understand that we are bound by limits, as are the MA that we use. To minimize those limits, we take different techniques from various MA and take what is useful. As well, we must also bend certain techniques to our own mentality, physique, and spirituality.

But, JKD is just a label. Saying you 'know' JKD is forfeit. Instead you might want to say that we understand or 'know' oneself.

It emphasizes on simplicity and effectiveness.

Jeet Kune Do is not a particular style in general, just an adaptation of fighting knowledge to create an ultimate, or at least very effective self-invented style.
While this is true it has certain techniques to its own. Such as its low kicks, and punch techniques.

my favorite style is Capoeira. if you dont know what that is just picture eddie Gordo from tekken.
Capoeria, I love it so much. It is more of a sport and recreational MA than anything else. But none the less it can be devastating and beautiful.
