Fan Game: Super Smash Bros. 100
A fan fantasy featuring a roster of 100 characters + Bonus clones. Keep in mind that no characters are added for the sole purpose of competing with the amount of characters of less iconic universes. So if you don't see Waddle Dee, that's why.

What are your suggestions?
100 characters and no AW rep? Ouch.

Some series tend to be too overrepresented but I digress.

As for the cut discussion people were having earlier I only see like 5-7 characters getting cut I think we'll be seeing more cuts than usual if we get a brand new game from scratch.

Did you switch your rosters accidentally?
I thought "Darker Pit" would have made it obvious. :p

Oh, my bad. I left Shaq :yeahboi: out of my ideal roster! No wonder you thought I switched them.
Your roster did remind me how I want Caeda playable though. I'd have put her on my ideal roster, but then I'd have had four Fire Emblem newcomers. :p

A Pegasus Knight in Smash would be awesome though, considering they're series staples.

I had no idea I wanted this so much until now. :b:
However, the way Sakurai picks characters pretty much excludes any pegasus knight from getting into Smash unless they're a main character from a recently released game. I wonder if he'll get rid of that criteria and put in more iconic characters with legacy like Caeda, K. Rool, Isaac, etc. instead of just the freshest new characters on the block.

The only time iconic comes in to play is if the character is an icon of sorts and hardly any character fits that criteria anymore. Rare examples of this would be Diddy in Brawl and Mac in Smash 4.

It's sad because so many great characters can't make the cut anymore. The ones who aren't making appearances in their series or the ones whose series have been MIA for so long. I wish Sakurai would re-consider his thinking.

Why not Cory?

Is it because his poser took his spot in the game? :4corrin:

I know the performance was transcendent but Cory is a fictional character.
Cory transcends all of fiction and reality. :reverse:

Here's my version. The top five rows are my roster, the bottom part are the top 10 characters I would like to see added as well.

Tried to keep the amount of cuts to a minimum: only the 3rd party DLC characters and Lucina are not found on here.
New characters: Captain Toad, Dixie Kong, Pokémon, Infantry Unit, Isaac, Chibi-Robo, Inkling and Bomberman
Returning characters: Wolf and Ice Climbers

Now, for my explanations:
  1. While I feel Toad is already an unique character worthy of inclusion, Captain Toad turns it up to eleven: especially his no-jumping schtick allows for some very interesting gameplay. I envision him as some sort of 'stance' character, who switches by filling up his backpack with Down B - causing him to lose/gain his jumping skills, but gaining/losing lots of power for his Smash Attacks in which he swings his backpack around.
  2. As many others do, I feel like the Donkey Kong franchise is somewhat underrepped, having lots of characters that can be tapped into. Being included as often in various games as Dixie Kong has been - as well as gaining lots of abilities that can be transferred to Smash - I feel like she is the best choice at this point in time.
  3. Due to the lack of information on both the new Smash game as well as the new Pokémon game (though there's a Direct coming our way today) I left this one open.
  4. Possibly the biggest 'what' on my list: the Infantry Unit. Stemming from the Wars series, I feel like a common soldier represents the entire series (including Famicom Wars, Advance Wars, Battalion Wars) better than any single character from the series, as these characters tend to disappear after a game or two. Battalion Wars paved way for the Infantry unit by fleshing out the character more and splitting it up in various sub-units, each of which can be used for inspiration for its moveset. I can somewhat see Infantry Unit take parts of Snake's moveset, allowing those that enjoyed playing Snake a new 'home'.
  5. Isaac should've been included already. He has tons of unique potential and lots of recognizability.
  6. His games might not have always been the biggest success, but Chibi-Robo is still a very unique character with tons of potential: utilizing some sort of powering up/down mechanic or allowing him to tether to parts of the stage or even foes sounds pretty sweet to me. With five games under his belt, I'd say he's worthy of inclusion.
  7. The biggest stars of recent Nintendo history, Inklings feel like they're almost guaranteed. Having a mechanic that allows them to (at least temporarily) paint the stage for additional utilities sounds like a blast.
  8. Bomberman, to me, is the biggest 3rd party character that feels at 'home' on Nintendo consoles.Let's hope Konami gets their head back on straight.
As for the B-list at the bottom:
  1. As long as Sakurai is spearheading the Smash project, I'm having a hard time seeing Bandana Dee make the cut. Too bad, as I really like the character.
  2. The pre-4 leaks have gotten me interested in the Chorus Kids. A mechanic centered around timing attacks may be really fun.
  3. I feel the wrath of King K. Rool fans already, but as he is pushed into the shadows more and more, Cranky Kong is my number two pick (after Dixie) for the DK universe at this point in time. I can envision a slow and frail but technical character, that turns out incredibly agile when bouncing around on his cane.
  4. While Zelda is also somewhat underrepresented, I feel like the characters that currently are in Smash envelop the series pretty well. The beastly version of Ganon, however, is still lacking (apart from a reference in the Final Smash). The trident-and-magic-wielding pigman would be the best option in my book. Tingle is also a character that could represent Zelda in some way. I don't know why, but I've taken a certain liking to his inclusion in Smash.
  5. While I don't feel F-Zero needs an additional fighter (especially since the series has been in stasis for a long time), Captain Falcon's archetype I find very interesting. Mach Rider may be an alternative to the flashy powerhouse, with normals that differ from Captain's as much as Wolf's did to Fox's and specials that are more in line with his own game.
  6. Paper Mario is interesting: he has tons of games and tons of potential, but his abilities change so wildly from game to game that I'm uncertain which set he should use should he be included. I also rank him somewhat lower than Captain Toad, causing him to fall to this list.
  7. Hailing from another oft-forgotten series, Saki's sword/gun-thing would allow for a moveset we have yet to see.
  8. Finally, Spring Man. It's just to soon for an ARMS character, I'd say. Long ranged, disjointed punches would allow for a new attack pattern.
Wew. Thoughts? :)

What was your reasoning for removing the third party DLC characters? Including ballot winner Bayonetta?
Not a concious decision to remove all third party DLC characters in that sense, but I still consider third parties guest characters. Sonic is just really tight-knit with Nintendo these days, as was Mega-Man before and Pac was requested by Miyamoto during Brawl IIRC, which is why I left those three on there.

Aren't Street fighter, Final Fantasy and Bayonetta really tight-knit too though?

I mean, Nintendo saved the Bayonetta franchise after all.

But him bringing up Mega Man is fine?
Mega Man is dead right now but up until then Nintendo platforms were its most frequent source of content, weren't they?

It's not like he jumped ship, his ship just sank.

IIRC, the last FF on a Nintendo console was VI. Ever since, it's found home on PlayStation. That's how much, 10 games?

Similarly, only SF2 really had an impact on a Nintendo console - many other installments were never launched, or only ported, on Nintendo consoles.

While Nintendo did save Bayonetta, it's only one game just yet - should we see more Bayonetta in the future I can support her inclusion, but I stand by excluding her from my roster for now.

Also re: Mega Man: most of his games did launch on Nintendo, even if there isn't much launched these days.

He kind of did for a while.

The far majority of console Mega Man games went to Sony while Nintendo got the low budget handhelds.

PS1 and PS2 have tons of Mega Man games available nowhere else.

IIRC, the last FF on a Nintendo console was VI. Ever since, it's found home on PlayStation. That's how much, 10 games?
What about all the other Final Fantasy games like the spin offs? They're almost exclusively Nintendo.

Similarly, only SF2 really had an impact on a Nintendo console - many other installments were never launched, or only ported, on Nintendo consoles.
I don't see why ports are a bad thing exactly.

Street Fighter games still had impact on Nintendo consoles. Just nothing reached SF2 heights.

While Nintendo did save Bayonetta, it's only one game just yet - should we see more Bayonetta in the future I can support her inclusion, but I stand by excluding her from my roster for now.
I have a feeling we won't be waiting too much longer.

Street Fighter 2? Sure. The rest of Street Fighter? Not really. Nintendo seriously never got 3, 4, or 5. Just the first one and about 1000 different iterations of SF2.

FF main series hasn't been seen since 6.

Bayonetta so far has been a one time thing.

No really comparing those to the history between Mario and Sonic, or the long history of many Mega Man games. Pac-Man is a little more out there, but that series kind of fizzled out for the most part anyway, and when there was a new game, it tended to end up on Nintendo, at least the ones that I know of. Regardless, the Pac-Man series still had a bigger presence on Nintendo platforms than the other 3.

Nintendo got 4 and the Alpha series (which are canon). No one got SF1. It was arcade only and for good reason.

Explain, because the Pac-Man games don't have a HUGE Nintendo original title like Street Fighter (SFII), Final Fantasy (FFI-FFVI) and Bayonetta (2) have.

When I think of the SNES, I think of games like Street Fighter 2 and the Final Fantasy games.

When I think of the Wii U, I think of Bayonetta 2.

I'd be hard pressed to find someone thinks of Pac-Man World 2 when they think of Gamecube.

Pac-Man has just been kind of there for generations. His games had little impact on the console ecosystems barring the arcade days.

Fire Emblem fandom aside for a moment, and in all seriousness, I just wanted to say something about the Robin thing.

PsychoJosh PsychoJosh
Obviously I know it's your roster and obviously it comes down to your personal choice (hell, I cut Zero Suit Samus from mine because I dislike duplicate identities, and Captain Falcon just because I didn't like him...I fully understand the personal choice aspect, and I have no room to attack you there). That being said I believe keeping Robin is very important, even if the series is only cut down to two veterans. Fire Emblem has always been a sort of "sword and sorcery" type of tactical series. By getting rid of Robin, half of that is cut out.

So honestly, I think if you don't have any attachment to any Fire Emblem character, want to cut the six veterans down to two and add a newcomer, and who is picked doesn't matter too much, I'd say it'd be more beneficial to the roster itself to keep Marth and Robin more than Marth and Ike. Yes, Ike is the most popular, but Robin offers more to stand out and helps fully represent the series. With Marth and Robin, you get a mix of Old+New, Swords+Magic.

Just my opinion, really. Obviously if you have more of an attachment to ones on your roster currently, by all means keep them. I'm just saying that if you have no attachments whatsoever, keeping Robin over Ike may be more beneficial from a roster diversity standpoint. That's all.
I don't really care which three Fire Emblem reps are there in my roster, I only kept Ike because I thought he was more popular than Robin. But if Robin's really that important, then whatever, Robin stays then. It doesn't matter to me.

I have to say this is probably the first time we actually discussed my roster and not me "treating FE fans like ****" (which honestly, wasn't my intention, but I make no apology for it regardless).

So to explain a couple of different choices I made:

I chose F-Type, Lip, Wario Land Wario and Earthworm Jim because they were my childhood games:

F-Type would be a crazy out-of-left-field pick to put in the game.

Lip would finally get the representation she's been asking for since Melee, since her stick has been an item for so long but she and her friends haven't made an appearance at all. Panel de Pon has a passionate community and putting her in would be my gift to them.

Wario Land Wario is my #1 choice and has been my most desired character since Melee. He would easily be my main if he were in the game with a moveset based on Wario Land. In my imagination he'd be super-heavyweight class, considerably bigger than his current size, and not nearly as floaty as his current iteration. Gone would be his status as a flatulent joke character and more as the greedy anti-hero I knew and loved from the Game Boy games.

Earthworm Jim would be in the roster because while he isn't exactly relevant anymore, he is not at all an "obscure" choice. Back in the 90s he was very famous and had lots of media coverage and merchandise. If my dream Smash game were to be made, it would probably tie in with a revival of the Earthworm Jim series. I feel that the game needs more quirky and absurd characters, and Jim would lend a humorous American flavor to the roster.

I chose Mona over Ashley because I feel she's a better representation of the quirky humor of the Warioware series.

I chose Hades and some other villains because the roster simply needed more villains.

A couple of things... first, Waluigi isn't part of the Wario Land series, he has NEVER appeared in any Wario Land game. Not even once. He's more of a representative of the Mario Sports series along with Daisy, since he was created solely so that Wario would have a doubles partner in Mario Tennis 64.

Secondly... Pauline? Why, exactly? Do you even have an idea of how she would fight?

Finally, you added a bunch of Sonic characters but didn't add the one that would stand out over all of them which is Dr. Eggman? And why only an Inkling Girl? Shouldn't the Inkling Boy be there as an alternate skin?

In this case, I really don't think more is better. You have a bunch of nonsense chaff characters that wouldn't really offer very much. I don't see Tails and Shadow being different enough from Sonic to make them interesting.

I didn't know SF4 came out on 3DS. That's my bad. Also forgot about Alpha, and couldve swore 1 was on some console, but I guess I'm wrong on that too. *Shrugs* What can you do?
Edit: Had to look it up, original street Fighter came to to Wii VC in 2009.

I guess the impact is a little more significant than I first thought, but it's still not all that big of a deal in comparison to the others, outside of Pac-Man.

I'm aware of Sakurai's mentality of why Cloud was in Smash. I'm only defending the idea of why someone wouldn't see him or any FF characters as a must have on their roster.

As for Pac-Man I don't know where you got he was only on Nintendo consoles out of my statement, I just said that he was there. Of course he was multiplat. Anyway like I said it's different than Sonic and Mega Man, Pac-Man as a series hasn't progressed much since the arcade days, but he has definitely still had a larger presence on Nintendo consoles than the others, even if they weren't big releases, and that was the point I was trying to make.

We may haven't get main FF games but there were a bunch of remakes and pretty good spin-offs on the GBA and DS, but you know what? screw that! the 3DS barely got anything FF related. at least there is the Bravely series which is fantastic imo, and Square Enix said they wanted to focus heavily on the Switch, please bring back FF.

A couple things.

I too want Wario Land Wario, whats your thoughts on PM's Wario? Honestly, i think it's a great combination of both Wario's, but I'm guessing by your wording you don't like Waft that much so it might not be up your alley.

Secondly, if you don't think Tails could be different from Sonic, try him out in SSF2. He's got gadgets, and uses his tails for some of the most satisfying attacks I've used in Smash or any game related to Smash yet. I wouldn't mind him. Also, agreed on Eggman, with 100 characters he should be there.

Well, PM Wario is a good effort, but there's only so much they could've been able to do with him as it is just a romhack. I want a moveset that makes use of his transformations and other powerups from the WL games. I suppose the waft could still be a taunt to troll people with, like it spikes people EXTREMELY hard when they get hit by it in the air, but the hitbox is so small they have to be almost overlapping Wario to get hit by it..

I suppose Tails might have gadgets to use, but honestly I think Knuckles and Eggman are way more interesting than him. I only see Tails getting if they try to do a Nintendo vs. Sega kind of thing, otherwise I'd rather have those other two, mainly because I'm a fan of powerhouse/heavyweight characters in games.

Obvious

He's more of a representative of the Mario Sports series along with Daisy, since he was created solely so that Wario would have a doubles partner in Mario Tennis 64.
Does it matter? He uses the Wario emblem in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U. I mean I don't think Waluigi is ever going to get in, I just put him in because it's a larger roster and he has potential for a unique move set based on his personality.

Secondly... Pauline? Why, exactly?
Well, I already explained this, but Pauline is an icon of Nintendo's classic history. She was the first damsel in distress and would be a great novelty to have her make a comeback to beat up the other Nintendo characters being what she is, a mostly forgotten damsel.

Do you even have an idea of how she would fight?
I would say she's a mixture of Peach & Pac-Man's styles. Deriving material from the Donkey Kong Arcade games, Mario V.S. Donkey Kong (The hammer and mini toys), and her own apparel such as the parasol and purse. It would be interesting to see the parasol use as a weapon as apposed to a recovery like Peach. There are other things to derive from Donkey Kong as well such as jacks.

I mean I can't detail specifics. It's a fools errand to try to come up with a move set for a character when you're not Sakurai. He's the only one who really knows how to do it right.

Finally, you added a bunch of Sonic characters but didn't add the one that would stand out over all of them which is Dr. Eggman?
I guess you could have Eggman.

And why only an Inkling Girl? Shouldn't the Inkling Boy be there as an alternate skin?
I felt like that didn't require mentioning. I didn't mention Robin or Wii Fit Trainer's alternate genders either because it was kind of obvious.

Waluigi is not classified as a Wario character in Smash Wii U/3DS. The instance you likely remember is from the direct where assist trophies were shown off. Waluigi erroneously has the Wario series emblem. This is corrected in-game.

Otherwise, nice to see someone else that's at least interested in Pauline. She's not likely at all, but I think the concept could still be interesting. I personally see something along the lines of Jack-O from Guilty Gear as a possible route for the character, just replace Jack-O's pumpkin minions with Mini Marios and the like.

I disagree on character playstyle/moveset speculation being a fool's errand though. Who gets in and how they play is of course up to Sakurai (or whoever takes up the role of directing the next Smash should he not return), but that doesn't mean we can't speculate for fun. :p

Either way, we may not have a say, but there are still numerous instances of fans getting things right by coming up with the same or similar ideas that in some cases do end up being used. Fans do come up with a lot of strange stuff/questionable choices but there are some good ideas among them, and at the end of the day what works and what doesn't is subjective.

Where did you get that idea?
I just figure that there are other Mario and Donkey Kong characters who'd likely get in before she does. Even as a possible Retro character, there are other contenders who may be picked first, such as Takamaru who Sakurai has considered several times already. I don't think she's an impossibility, just very, very low in terms of likelihood.

Well, if we're talking about a realistic roster, Super Mario and Donkey Kong already have everybody they need. People like to think that Dixie or King K. Rool is a no-brainer or a necessity, but in reality they are completely unnecessary. When you have DK & Diddy then it doesn't get much better than that. No other character in the DK universe is on the level that those two are nor are any as recurring or iconic.

Same goes with Kirby. People always like to think "Well, who's next?". The reality of the situation is that these series are completed with all the most important characters. Only in the context of a large roster like the one I presented would characters like Dixie or Waddle Dee be likely. You need to know when to say when and consider characters under their merits alone. Does this character sufficiently represent Nintendo's history? Is it an iconic Nintendo character outside the context of it's own universe?

So the reason I consider Pauline likely is that she qualifies under her own merits and not under the merits of "Well, who's the next most important character of the series?". Pauline would most likely use the DK emblem, but the emblem is nothing more than a formality. Pauline's universe is more of a grey area and so I think it'd be unfair to say "Well, there's better Super Mario or Donkey Kong characters". She doesn't necessarily belong to either of those universes. Pauline's "univers" is basically the classic Nintendo arcade universe. She represents Nintendo's roots more than she represents Super Mario or Donkey Kong Country. I think she should be considered on those merits and not under the context of what emblem she'd have. I like to think of characters as more than just tools of "muh representation".

Oh don't get me wrong, I'd like to see Pauline and agree that she has merit, my point was more so that her avenue for making it into Smash would likely be as a retro character because she lacks the fan demand of Mario and DK characters who would be included on a combination of said demand and their merit.

Perhaps I worded it poorly but my point wasn't in regards to simply "what series/emblem" they have. I don't care for "x" series has to have "x" amount of characters, or "we absolutely need a new character from "x" series". I'm one of those people that'd be perfectly fine with FE getting another 2-3 or however many characters so long as they had the legacy/potential/popularity, etc. to back it up.

My view of Pauline is more or less this; she has an important legacy, but she lacks relevance and popularity, hence my belief that her inclusion banks on Sakurai seeing potential in the character and adding her as a retro character. And that said, the series that a character comes from or the archetype they fill does matter to an certain extent.

A new Pokemon and a new FE character are usually given for both the merit of said characters and advertising. Greninja barely existed when it was chosen for Smash, only being selected because Sakurai was hit with inspiration based on the design docs alone. The main point being was that he was looking for a new Pokemon to add and if not Greninja, someone was going to be added as he'd set aside the slot (which I hate using as there are no actual "slots") for a Pokemon.

And of course the retro character is something Sakurai tries to include at least one of in each new iteration of Smash because he looks back and wants to bring in characters from across Nintendo's history. The fact that he bothers to do this does show a little bit of credence to "representation" as he does actually actively take the time to include these sort f characters because he wants to represent said history.

Adding a character for the sake of having another character from that series is not what I was trying to convey. I guess the tl;dr version is that there are still a plethora of other characters that have lots of merit of their own who overshadow her be they characters from a series like Mario or DK, or an archetype like a retro character.

At the end of the day it falls to whether or not Sakurai takes an interest in the character and comes up with a moveset he likes enough to actually add, the chances of which I simply see as low given how many other characters we know Sakurai has considered/wanted to add + all the requests and new characters that continue to be made.

Super Smash Brothers.. 210.
Reminds me of pre-Brawl rosters where people defended them with "If Melee could double 64's roster, then there's no reason Brawl can't quadruple Melee's."

Mad props for Bill Rizer, Bub, Muddy, and Lolo, but Tin Star takes so many points away that I think you're still in the red.
