So I'm gonna have some fun and speculate why the rest of the characters are not yet available for the Invitational demo (which most likely will be the Best Buy demo too):

-Ike: This one is easy, too early in development and not ready.
-Charizard: A bit more finished than Ike, but still not ready (funny how Greninja is already complete. Guess they want to show the newcomers more).
-Yoshi: Hopefully going through some heavy balancing so he can be more than lowish tier this time.
-Sheik: ZSS is ready and not Sheik? Perhaps the new specials need more polishing.
-Diddy Kong: They realized the bananas are OP? Or perhaps he has a connection with other future newcomers like Dixie or K. Rool that causes its delay.
-Lucario: Too many testers died at full aura upB. Aura too strong.
-Dedede: Working on him to make him even sexier. Or balancing Gordos.
-Toon Link: Hopefully they are changing some of his moves to reference Wind Waker and make him less of a Link clone. PLEASE?!.
-Peach: Don't have much here. But I heard someone said that they are changing her Bneutral to something else to make Toad a playable character.
-Luigi: In the end, Luigi and perhaps others here are planned for secret characters and they want to mantain some sort of mystery to them by not making them playable still. Also, polishing the new Final Smash.

Just did this for fun. And probably the reason all of these characters not being in the demo is just that they are not ready yet.

Does anyone have any idea what stages will be used for rounds 1 2 and 3?

I'm prerty sure every character is finished. I bet the left out ones just aren't polished enough (balance reasons etc) for competitive play.

I doubt there any major moveset changes we don't know about.

He's got some competition. Whether he uses Marth or not depends on how lucky he is with the draw.

Does anyone else think that the characters that aren't available might be unlockables? It would make sense, especially for Toon Link and Luigi.

Pretty sure there is no reason for characters missing. You guys are looking into it too much.

Rules are a bit iffy. But it's something, heck, more than what I expected from Nintendo. So long as we behave ourselves to these rules despite them not being what we completely want. I'm guessing the rules are constructed to showcase items and different modes to have more shown in the game. Can't say I don't want to see it all. I'm thirsting for gameplay!

To be fair this event is more about celebrating Smash as a whole, not just the competitive community. It makes sense for the ruleset to encompass everything Smash has to offer (minus the characters, but that's somewhat excusable) rather than just the competitive standard.

Not Geoff Keighley?

Because I'm still wrapping my head over that. Not to mention he's already hosting the Playstation Experience and the Spike thing.
Not really. Kind of expected as much. He did that Halo Global Championship back at Pax Prime last year.

Well said. Let's see this as a celebration for better things to come for the smash community.

*Grand Finals is a 4-stock, 8-minute, 1-on-1 match on Battlefield as an homage to the competitive Smash Bros. community.

I'm rooting for PeachyHime because people are being unfair to her especially in the comments on Facebook. Also rooting for Zero.

As for characters, I would root for Little Mac because I love him, but I don't want people to think he's OP. So, Rosalina, Bowser and Link.

I'm going to root for whoever I think plays the best. The one who is competitive and playing to win.

Yeah, that is a downside when considering the video game community.

Edit: Or just people in that matter, when considering PeachyHime.

I am not going to lie, I am a little salty that she was one of the 16 players invited while M2K was not. But, I am not sure why people are taking it out on her.

m2k doesn't portray the image nintendo wants to have, it's not about her getting in over her, he never had a chance to begin with

also, why is everyone so salty about the list? the fact the event is happening at all is 10000x more acknowledgement than we've had from them in the past

This man speaks the truth. I have a lot of respect for M2K, but he has the same image issues Mango has, basically. Also, it's pretty clear Nintendo didn't want it to be a total sausage fest. I can't blame them for wanting to show that girls can be great at Smash Bros, too... because they can, sure, but also because that means more sales. And there's nothing wrong with that.

I am sad that M2K won't get to go, though. Not joking. But he's pretty high profile. For whatever reason, his name recognition is the highest among competitive Smash players. If he's got the dough, he could drop by any other Smash event from now until he retires and still garner any glory he still desires. I do worry about his hand problems, though. I hope he sees a specialist.

This is tons more than what was expected from Nintendo. The list is near perfect, the commentators are spot-on and the ruleset is understandable with hype grand finals. The adapter fixes every single problem there was concerning the game's viability in tournaments. Hope to see someone take ZSS.

ALSO, DJ NINTENDO HYPE!!!!!! MY FAVE PLAYER!!!!!

Super happy with this news. I am okay with the item showcase at the beginning. It's just too bad the event will only be two and a half hours long! I think the commentators, the ruleset, the fan-favorite hype bracket, the Nokia Theater, the face of Geoff, live twich stream, all with Gamecube controllers...I'm just stunned. This is a great event to showcase everything smash is. Thanks Nintendo for this support we feel - I've been able to get involved with the People's Challenge and that has got me even more hyped to find out who wins.

HYPE!!!!!!

Oh lordy, this whole tournament is so hype. Aside from the iffy ruleset, which to be totally honest, could've been a lot worse, it looks like all the stars have aligned to deliver what could arguably be one of the most important moments in Smash history. ...And I'll be at a work conference while it airs. :c Ah well, I'll just catch the recording on YouTube later.

Also, totally gonna be rooting for Ken. I suspect he might be disqualified early on, but man, I totally hope to see him own with Marth.

Oh man, with 4 Marth players (PPU, Ken, KDJ, and Dr. PP), we might see a battle for who gets to pick Marth first. (Since all the players will choose their character in order, from 1 to 16)

My gut feeling tells me that if PP gets Marth, he's making it to grand finals.

Along with Zero.

Just to clarify, I never insinuated that she got in over M2K. I merely asserted the objective, he is not on the list, she is.

I hope PewPewU gets to be Marth, but I also wish I knew what the "special draft" will be. He's my favorite player of the 16.

If he doesn't get Marth, I hope he rocks a cool newcomer like Greninja or Little Mac.

EDIT: I will say, however, that I'm a tiny bit dissapointed that Fly Amanita, Shroomed, Westballz, and SFAT aren't on the roster after watching their amazing work at Pat's House 2 last weekend.

Some predictions:
  • The unchosen characters will be Pit, DK, Mario, Link
  • If anyone picks Rosalina they will drop out Round 1; she seems like she will have a very steep learning curve, meaning that none of the players will be able to master her in the time they've been given to practice (if they get any time at all). On top of this, her campy, spacing playstyle seems really unsuited to FFA's.
  • Mega Man will be one of the last characters picked.
  • Marth on the other hand will be chosen first.
  • A new meme will result from this, most likely something said by the commentators.
  • Little Mac will do worse than expected; however, at least one kill will come out of the KO Uppercut.
  • Finals will be HBox's Villager vs. amsa's Kirby/Mega Man
  • A big name player will drop out early and will be very salty
  • Character will be announced at the end, winner will fight Sakurai, who will be playing that character.
  • Good times will be had by all.

I would like to point out that historically the Western coast has been more accepting of items in the more casual friendlies, and it would seem most of the players picked are from the Western coast. Just an observation.

Predictions for character selection:

Hugs will pick Samus and probably be unchallenged.

HBox will pick Kirby in an effort to recreate his Jigglypuff fighting, but The Rapture will also pick Kirby.

DJ Nintendo will pick Bowser and probably be unchallenged.

Of the 5 Peach mains, MacD will pick Zelda (because he said he wanted to on Twitter), and I have no idea about milktea, Lilo, or PeachyHime because all of milktea's mains are either not included here (Peach and Sheik) or will be in serious contention (Marth and Fox) and I just don't know much about Lilo, Crismus, or PeahyHime. For this reason, I assume PeachyHime will pick up a newcomer, but I have no clue about milktea, Crismus, or Lilo.

Marth will have to be between Ken, PewPewU, and PPMD. I have no idea how they could settle this, but I suppose PewPewU and PPMD could also try for Fox.

Speaking of Fox, Toph, PPMD, KDJ, and ZerRo will all try for Fox. I really don't know what they'll settle as.

Finally, amSa will pick Villager because why not.

I'm still flipping my **** over the commentator selection personally. They picked the absolute best three. They're all great at generating hype whilst remaining informative and professional.

Also, despite the fact that yeah, the whole numbered card system will give whoever gets the lower-numbered cards first pick to the character of their choosing, I've got a semi-strong feeling that the sixteen guys will probably discuss among themselves who will get which character before the morning of the Invitational even happens. Knowing these guys, I think most of them are pretty friendly with each other overall, and they'll figure out who chooses who to avoid having to compete with each other for the characters...unless one of them decides to be a jerk and takes advantage of the card system. Don't think it'll happen though, so I imagine after the initial e-mail forwrding/Skype call, the guys will already know who's gonna choose which character.
