E3 2014 - Super Smash Bros. Invitational - Players/Rules Announced

I can see everyone else though.

Zelda's usually pretty good for FFA though, Fsmash is great crowd control and Fair / Bair sweetspot is great for getting kills. Ditto DK to some extent but he is a big target.

Not knowing who those players main, I'll just take a guess that Mario, Bowser, Donkey Kong, and Zelda will probably get left out though someone might want to try out Zelda now that she's standalone right?

I actually think Little Mac may be an FFA monster too with that charge punch and the OHKO.


My guess on the characters who will get left out is Villager, Kirby, Sonic, Mario.

Villager is weird and doesn't seem to have great crowd control.
Unless Kirby has seen huge buffs he's probably still terrible.
Sonic is notoriously horrible at FFA.
Mario's usually pretty underwhelming and doesn't have great FFA performance.

It depends on the stage.

He needs platforms. Otherwise he can just get grabbed and spaced out constantly lol. The OHKO could be a factor.

I don't know, both of them had some changes so maybe some of the players will want to try them out.
I think the only ones who do not have any big change are Mario, Kirby, Link and probably Fox? Fox is going to be chosen by someone most definitely, maybe the other three won't.

He's always been a hard character to use, so that's why I don't expect anyone to use him here since none of the participants (AFAIK) use DK.

How the draft works, as stated at http://e3.nintendo.com/invitational/info.html :

Character Draft
On the morning of the tournament, each player will draw a number from a hat, ranging from 1 through 16. Players will then pick characters one by one based on their numerical order starting with 1. After a character is chosen, they are no longer selectable by any other player. Players must keep the same character throughout the entire event.

Couldn't an indecisive player choose random though and just stick with whatever character shows up for the rest of the tournament? Or I wonder if they will allow being a random character every match.

They pick their character before the tournament even starts, and nobody else can pick that character then. Random won't be an option.

Nintendo made an announcement this morning regarding their upcoming plans for E3, and the big news is an invitational tournament hosted by Nintendo for thousands of players on the showroom floor at E3 in Los Angeles.

Simultaneously, Nintendo will once again be partnering with Best Buy to give players across the country access to the same Super Smash Bros demo so players can have local tournaments in their area.

The main reason I say no Mario is
1) Most people here doubt Sakurai's balancing on Mario unfortunately
and 2) There are far more interesting characters to be quite honest
and lol there probably will be one person ballsy enough to pick Link after a trashy 3 game streak of low tiers xD

Some people are mad that M2K and Mango aren't invited. I think that also sucks, but since we get HungryBox I don't mind. I can't wait for Items on for the first rounds. I want to see someone get super salty because of this!

Overall It seems like most people are content with the invitational and it could have been a LOT worse. Also GCC HYPE!

Prog and D1 are amazing (and I mean AMAZING) commentators. Scar is great too! The player list is pretty solid. Hungrybox, aMSa and PPMD being in is amazing. We'll also see the "bottom of the barrel" characters being repped by DJ (Bowser) and HugS (Samus.) I'm hyped as hell for this.

I don't know what to think about Geoff Keighley being the host though.

Its not like this is Evo, this is just a big advertisement for fun. And really, it wouldn't be that fun watching 1v1s of people who are barely familar with the game. Would've prefered teams up until maybe semifinals or something, in FFAs people kinda unconciously team up on someone because they just want to go for whoever's winning

Seeing as not all of the confirmed characters will be in the demo, you probably won't be able to design a competitive tier list yet. But since this IS a demo, anything is subject to change upon the official release.

I'm glad to see that the reaction so far as been far more positive then negative. Had some concerns what the reaction was going to be in general, I've never watched something like this so it will be interesting to see.

Anybody who is upset about the rules, just remember, this is a tournament that takes place 5-6 months before the game releases, with only about 3/5 of the roster being revealed and only 20 of the characters being playable. It's part competitive tournament and part advertisement. The rules for the grand finale should tell you all you need to know. This is just the beginning for Nintendo.
