Recent as in a relevant game concerning that character has been released recently. Earthbound's on the eShop, Mother 3 wasn't even localized.

Mother is a niche franchise with a huge cult following. Mother 3 is widely beloved. No reason to cut Lucas aside from "oh no, clones!!!", which is silly.

He IS a clone, though. And Sakurai did say that not all of the past characters would get in. It just seems like the most logical choice, all of the other clones have either been confirmed already, or are in a big enough series (Star Fox, Zelda) that they can return.

Also, Ness was almost cut from Brawl.

Furthermore there's no reason they CAN'T differentiate him even further. See: Falco

EDIT: Where did you get the idea Ness was almost cut? They had time to put him in SSE. They barely had any for Sonic. Ness was done before Sonic was even worked on.

Ness was not almost cut from Brawl, he would have been replaced by Lucas in Melee, if EarthBound 64 hadn't been delayed.

Wait, Lucas a clone? Having a completely unique normal moveset, and Specials and FS that works different makes you a clone? No, Lucas is not a clone, at all. Doctor Mario is a clone. Luigi and Toon Link are semi-clones (TLink being debatable), but Lucas (and Wolf) are not clones. It baffles me that people for some reason decided Clones because of Specials. That aren't identical anyways.

Bomberman - highly unlikely
Pokemon Trainer - no
Tails - no
Ridley - not even going to start on him
Mewtwo - unlikely
Pac-Man - hate to admit it but it's possible
Palutena - hopefully yes
Chrom - likely but probably not at E3
Chorus Men - only if Sal leak is true

As for veterans the only cuts I can see are Snake and Lucas, maybe Wolf.

Just going to say, you should really keep your expectations low for E3. One newcomer reveal is hopeful, maybe a veteran or two, but remember E3 2007? No reveals at all, just a release date and a short trailer. E3 isn't going to be some "dream perfection" that reveals everything you ever wanted.

First of all, I'm not sure you noticed my first three were entirely a joke. I highly doubt any of those three characters will appear as playable in smash. I would be very surprised at any of them. Would be cool, though.

Your thought that Mewtwo is unlikely would probably be hotly contested by many on these boards.

Remember, though, these are just random guesses at any possible announcements that could happen at E3. I doubt we'll be getting everything I listed.

But this is going to be bigger than E3 07. There is going to be an hour and a half conference dedicated to this game. We will probably get some substantial information.

Well, Think of it like this. Sakurai will obviously wanna make a BIG announcement during that Tournament, right? A BIG one. It's pretty much confirmed who it has to be.

Seriously, though, I honestly DO expect Sakurai to be the 'final boss' using a brand new character. But I Think it would be either Ridley, PacMan or Mii (himself).

I am sure PacMan will be playable. And I was sure there would be Three third Party characters (PacMan, Sonic and MegaMan), so that you can have a battle with them and Mario, as a '4 biggest characters ever'. But now Snake comes along and ruins Everything. I guess we can now have a full battle with no Nintendo characters. :3

On topic, @everyone anybody got an idea for a Smash E3 reveal bingo?

I think Mewtwo, Pac-Man, Palutena, and a FE newcomer are some good characters to put on it.

Perhaps some vets too, like Captain Falcon or MK?
