True, but I think if they announced the demo, it wouldn't come out immediately because of this. Plus early adopters ALWAYS put more effort/money in to be first, only to have the cost go down later on.

As for the build crashing and 'bricking' the Wii U....I honestly doubt it. Yea, the demo has to be cleaned up a bit if it were to be released, but your Wii U won't brick from a gameplay freeze. It'll only 'brick' if the NAND is erased, altered, or damaged, which you only get if you turn it off during a firmware update.

When they added Zelda to Smash, her design in Hyrule Warriors might not have been finalized yet, so it probably wasn't an option.

I'm seeing this in action for the first time and as a fan of both Zelda and the Musou series, it seems like they really managed to mix both series together with great effect. I was worried they wouldn't be able to do it because Zelda has always been less about war and more about adventure, but I think I'm definitely gonna try and pick this up day 1 if possible. Zelda seems like she got a slightly altered moveset from Dynasty Warriors 7/8's rapier moveset though, so I wonder how unique the other movesets are based on that.

Not nearly as iconic. Skyward Sword Zelda is drastically different from all the others.

Maybe, but I think in Smash they try to design the characters in a style that matches most of their appearances. Skyward Sword Zelda might have been too different in appearance in comparison to other Zelda designs that they chose to simply go with the older Twilight Princess one because it's more similar to her other designs.
