The possibility of us not getting a Terry-esque character is beginning to sink in for me. It's funny, because Rex (XC2 in general, really), was part of my predictions before then, and I was holding out for more niche picks back then too. Admittedly, those predictions were rather biased; I had that feeling we'd get a big pick for E3, but never actually thought of one.

Based on past precedent, we're likely to get a big showstopper at E3 and a "boring" pick from a recent Switch release, which leaves no room for a Terry-level character. Furthermore, Terry is the only character of his level; The other more niche characters (:ultbayonetta::ultjoker::ultbanjokazooie:) had something going for them that got them through, be it Nintendo promotion, recent success, or insane popularity. There's a very real possibility that Terry is just a one-off occurrence, and that... Really sucks, because my most wanteds, Adol and Reimu, fit squarely into the category of Terry-tier picks.

So this is what reality feels like
I think there's still possibility of Terry-like pick. There's really not a lot of possibility for first parties at this point:
-Ayumi is getting her game localised finally, but I think this is way too late considering when the dlc where chosen
-Pokémon Sword/Shield will be dead soon with the (probable) anounncement of Diamon/Pearl remake soon. I think FP9 was Pokémon's last chace (beside, we already got a Spirits event)
-They could still surprise with Isaac or something but I wouldn't really count on it.

So my guess is that both FP10 and FP11 wil be third party, with one of them being a bit bigger (tho I expect that Minecraft and FF7 was probably the peak of the pass and it will be a bit smaller than that), and the other being smaller like Terry.

I'm personally expecting a Capcom character at E3 since IMO all the viable options have a good amount of potential hype backing them, but everyone is right in saying the thought that it NEEDS to be someone huge is pretty arbitrary.

I'm trying to keep my expectations in check because I can't really see too many of my MWs being suitable E3 reveals (barring Chun-Li), and even though Palutena was revealed at E3 I feel like 1. she was at least a very popular character in the community and 2. the anime styled trailer was a bit of a spectacle in its own right, and I think that helped hype it up too... and I guess the focus on custom moves, which was a big reveal too? But also... we've only got two characters left, and let's say neither of them are particularly clear "E3 reveal" sort of characters, that probably wouldn't prevent them from showing them off anyway.

That is if Nintendo is even at E3 this year, they might just do their own thing.

Considering that Street Fighter is already in Smash heavily, and Resident Evil is Largely Deconfirmed... Most other Capcom Reps I can think of are either too Niche (Pheonix, Amaterasu) or too "Non Family Friendly" (Dante, Monster Hunter) which neither really fit the E3 Presentation.

My Gut keeps telling me we're going to get someone along the lines of Rayman, Crash, or Tracer.

Won't get into why that doesn't matter for Chun-Li, but how is Monster Hunter any less family-friendly than Ridley stabbing Mega Man through the chest?

You forgot Luigi’s Mansion 3, DKC Tropical Freeze and Kirby Star Allies as prominent successful first-party titles.
Thing is, the "promotional" picks are usually reserved about a year in advance, and have about a year to half a year between their game and the DLC; COVID probably fricked up the release dates, though, so I think a promotional character would be from 2020 to the first half of 2021. Assuming we were including all successful first-parties, we'd already have two promotional picks in Min Min and Pyra.

As for the thing about "hype" at E3, we've usually gotten a big character there. Mega Man, Ryu, Ridley, Banjo (Plus Hero, but they were more of a Japan-appeal thing), and presumably Steve as well. The Mii/Palutena one was an exception, not the norm; The focus was on the customization aspect rather than just a general "WHOA, COOL CHARACTERS!" Besides, the fact that you could make anyone with the Miis, using Abraham Lincoln himself as an example, is more than likely gonna get a lot of publicity. It was about an aspect of the game itself rather than the roster; You could probably count EVERYONE IS HERE under that umbrella as well.

Ridley is First Party, and was a Largely Requested Fan Pick like Banjo/K Rool.

Huh, could have sworn we've had many Nintendo E3 presentations that show off 18+/M rated games. Guess they must have never existed if this is a genuine issue

This doesn't really have anything to do with what you said before, or what you were responding to lmao.

Monster Hunter is also heavily requested in Japan. Just like Hero, who was revealed at... well, you know.
Exactly, Alongside Banjo & Kazooie. And since we're not doing any Duo Reveals (I'm assuming) I would say that Pyra/Mythra seem to be the "Hero" Picks of this year, while E3 will be the "Banjo & Kazooie" Pick.

Even if you play that game, there's still examples like Bayonetta who's game is not exactly something you want to get your 10 year old kid on their birthday.

Yep, and she was revealed in a Smash Exclusive Direct, similar to other characters like Simon and Richter who fall under that umbrella as well.

Crash would work well enough for the next one (e3 timing)
I'm not a fan of crash, but lots seem to want him now.

Just for clarity, could you explain what you mean by a "Terry-level character"? Because to fighting game fans, he was a pretty huge deal, like a Hero-level announcement.

Are you talking about just general niche characters? If so, where's the bar? Joker was incredibly niche to the filthy casual crowd like myself, for example. To the huge audience of Nintendo fans born after the turn of the millennium, Banjo is niche.

For it to be a Terry-level character, do they need to be more obscure from the perspective of this thread in particular?

I'm not trying to be a prick or start a fight, I'm genuinely asking so I can properly contribute to the conversation haha.

Crash wouldn't count for SWSU, after all, Crash 4 has strong language that this site censors, clearly, not for the kids so it has to removed from the entire thing because E3 presentations have never had games that aren't for kids

To be fair about Palutena at e3 there was really nothing else they could show. Duck hunt and Bowser jr. where secret, so the only remaining newcomers at the time was Palutena, Pac-man, Robin/Lucina and Shulk.
They could’ve shown Pac-Man, one of the most iconic characters in pop culture as a whole, in the presentation (in addition to Palutena, they’re not mutually exclusive) but they chose a weird insiders only thing instead. I don’t think Nintendo is overly concerned with who they parade around for Smash considering it’s an event regardless.

Lol. that's the first time I've heard that. I think it doesn't amtter, considering everything that's in Bayonetta.
They just have to not put the un-familiy-friendly stuff in.

You're moving goalposts here. Your first point was that those franchises weren't very family friendly, but when people gave you Ridley killing Mario and Mega Man you move it to that he's Nintendo and gets a pass ignoring the counterpoint, and now you're hyperfocusing on it being exclusively an E3 problem, despite that event having no problems showcasing darker games (hell, the RE ports were a part of the same Nintendo presentation that showcased Hero and Banjo).

In the end, you're not answering the question and you're trying to gatekeep on characters using issues that were never a problem in the first place.

I think at least one of the two last characters will be first-party, and my money would be on the final reveal as opposed to F10 who would likely be revealed at E3.

Two third-parties isn't unlikely or anything, but I do think people are dismissing first-parties way too quickly. Seems like the general consensus before both Min Min and Pyra was, "There's no one left to add, so we're probably getting third-parties".

Sorry I haven't really followed the topic if that was part of it.

I just want there to be one 3rd party character that people will be satisfied with. Most likely the next one. No idea what the last one could be.

Characters that have a decent amount of influence, but aren't as well-known to the general public. I suppose we could also count Joker and Banjo in there, but they had other stuff that let them get around that; The former had struck gold and was riding off the wave at the time, and Banjo was an extremely popular request. Terry had neither, just SNK's impact. A good example of this who isn't in Smash yet would be a Falcom rep; They're hugely influential on JRPGs and PC gaming, but they're also pretty under-the-radar. A Terry-level character would mainly be coasting off of impact, without any requests, Nintendo exclusitivity, or massive recent success to push them forward. Admittedly, it is a little tricky to define; Hope that clears it up a little.

Ngl this is kinda funny considering how KoF14 kinda just... did patch the game's look up after everyone agreed it initially looked like crap
Lol, kinda. But it is technically the next game. SoulCalibur reused the same animations for, like, 5 games. So that's hardly unique to KoF.

Seeing this talk just reminds me of how horrifically ugly that Jump crossover fighting game looks. Like how is it the anime crossover fighting game decided to go with this ugly ass 3D style instead of good looking 2D style look that shares a genre with its entire cast of characters? Unbelievable
Because most Jump fans are inexplicably satisfied with getting terrible arena fighters. DBFZ was such an amazing breath of fresh air in that regard before they ruined it...

I'm open to the possibility, but who would you suggest? I just have a hard time thinking of anyone who makes much sense at this point, especially with Nintendo's latest lineup of new games and IPs being particularly skim (and the likes of Astral Chain and Ring Fit having been spirited).

There's a Gen 8 Pokemon which is a bit of a polarizing discussion that I could go either way on, maybe a fan favorite like Bandana Dee and... Waluigi. I can't think of too much else beyond that but I'd love to be blindsided by a super cool out of nowhere first party.

Actually, yeah, that answered all of my questions perfectly. Kudos haha.

Now that that's cleared up, I hope we get another one, too! Mostly because it would be borderline impossible to predict (i.e. fake a leak) and would go back to "base game" levels of speculation, which was always more fun to me personally because it allowed us to go back and discuss older or semi-forgotten characters. Hayabusa definitely still fits within that category, so fingers crossed we don't see him die a Mii Swordfighter death during the next Sakurai Presents.

Though I do see what people mean when they say it's getting more and more difficult picturing such a reveal when we're down to two slots left. Especially when Nintendo knows how enormous of a cash cow these Passes have been. They'd obviously want to make sure they stick the landing, and that could mean choosing the safest third-party characters to appeal to the biggest audience both here and in the west.

All that being said, Sakurai has been on a rampage of unpredictability during this pass. For all we know, a Valve character of all things could be next.

What possible future spirit events we may get ?? Here is a list of future nintendo 2021 published titles with dates:

1) Bravely Default 2 (26/02, published in the west)
2) New Pokémon Snap (30/04)
3) Famicom Detective Club (14/5)
4) Miiitopia (21/5)
5) DC Super Hero Girls (4/06)
6) Mario Golf Super Rush (25/06)
7) Zelda Skyward Sword HD (16/07)

I don’t think we will get spirit events from ports/remasters and spin-offs. I can only see them doing for BDII and FDC Remakes.

As for other titles, I think is crucial to see if MH Rise will get its own spirit event or not. If it happens (it doesn’t necessary mean to be the same week as the game releases, it can be a month later for example), it hurts MH character chances. Other games I can see them doing a spirit event are MH Stories 2 (if MH Rise gets its own one), Neo TWEWY and maybe No More Heroes 3.

Thinking about it, if the Blades release early enough, we just might be able to squeeze in another mid-level pick between now and E3. The usual expectation is someone big at E3 and a low-key ending, but if we get super lucky and they release in the first week of March, we could see a sped-up release cycle that ends with an E3 reveal. Those are generally either A: A huge iconic character, B: A popular request, or C: Something related to the game's big draws (Though these are usually reserved for the base game). The obligatory "shillpick" wouldn't really fit in there, so we could have enough room for another low-level pick.

Granted, this is a pretty big what-if, and hinges on us getting really lucky. If we'll actually get that luck, all we can do is wait and see.

Were they satisfied though? I thought everyone said the game looked (and played) like ****.

Whoever the last 2 characters are, they're gonna be cool as ****. After all, starting from Joker, there's been a pattern. 2 characters I like, 1 character I don't like. This is surely deliberate of Sakurai and not at all a coincidence
Isn't Pyra/Mythra technically 2 characters you don't like?

I won't consider :ultpyra: a true Hero pick unless she or Mythra have some crazy RNG that can kill at 20 % baked into them. :4pacman:

Singling this one out to say:

Nah, not happening. If it did happen there'd the riots amongst the Smash fanbase due to the 4th party implications.

FDC feels like the likliest Spirit Event, although any of the others could happen except for the highlighted one. Skyward Sword HD feels decently likely too.

I don't think that FP2 will end at E3 unless we are indeed getting some form of post-FP2 DLC.

I think BotW2 is something to consider. I know it's sort of hard to support a specific character when there's so little we know, but I think a Zelda character would be a pretty hype addition for a lot of people.

Just depends on whether or not Nintendo would want a Zelda character badly enough to where they'd ask Sakurai to work with BotW2's development team so he could add it in time.
