So due to the excitement from yesterday, I forgot to ask this. I'm sure I'm not the first one to ask but if it was discussed I missed out on it. Anyway the question is:

Why the heck didn't Heihachi's Mii costume come with Kazuya?

Either they negotiated for that costume a long time before the second pass was finalized, which does make some sense since Bamco as a developer for Smash would be easy to contact......or they pushed back that costume to Min Min for some reason. Maybe they had a lot of ideas for costumes to come alongside Kazuya? Like maybe in addition to a bunch of Tekken characters they also wanted to make costumes for some other characters who have a game released close by (Hayabusa for example). So they put Heihachi in a different spot where the Mii selection wouldn't be so crowded. But they could just have more costumes than usual. I don't see why they would restrict themselves to just 6 in one wave.

Maybe I'm overthinking this but it's got my curiosity. What do you all think?
Could also be to make Kaz's reveal an even bigger surprise.

A master ploy by Sakurai to throw off the scent. Community assumes Mii's just outright end a series chances at a fighter. Had Kazuya in his back pocket all along. No one even suspected a thing.

this may very sound dumb but...
wouldn't Phoenix's appearance overlap with Kazuya's suit alt? so far all the DLC in each pass have been different merely from an aesthetic perspective
Nah you ain't dumb don't worry : )

To be fair, you said it yourself; that drip outfit Kazuya's got isn't his default outfit. So MAYBE not...?

I don't know.

Well which RE protagonist would they do? Who knows. ; )
I FEEL like they could do Leon no problem. Jill if they wanted more female characters.

Wesker if they wanted more villains (Mind you we have 5 villain newcomers (dear god that's based))

Chris... idk, RE fans and/or followers what do y'all think?
Dimitrescu may not actually be off the table imo, she can be shrunken down like Ridley, also minus Wendy, we have 0 female villains.
West imo can't happen cuz we can't even see his face.

Claire Redfield, too I guess?
Well I already talked about it but I feel it would be either Jill, Chris or Leon.

It depends in how they approach it because each character has different positive things to their favor.

- Chris seems to be the one Capcom likes the most, if the quantity of appearances in main games is anything to go by. He has appeared in RE1, Resident Evil: Code Veronica X, Resident Evil 5, 6, 7 and 8. Plus he is the driving factor that leads Claire to Raccoon City in RE2, and he's also mentioned in RE3 where Jill, among other things, wants to find him. So even when he isn't around he usually is mentioned. He's also playable in RE Revelations.

- Jill is probably one of the most iconic female characters, at least from the PS1 era. Both her classic design and the RE3 design are quite recognizable, and she was in the original game, just as Chris. Resident Evil 3 is a beloved game among fans and she's the protagonist of the game. The thing "against" her is that she hasn't been playable in a numeric entry since ****ing Resident Evil 3, and if we talk about the whole series, her last playable appearance was Resident Evil Revelations which came out on 3DS.

- Leon is, based on my experience, probably the most popular character in the series. Or at least, tied with Jill for that spot. If we talk about numeric entries he has a more consistent track record than Jill. He debuted in RE2 where he shared the playable role with Claire, so he isn't from the original game, but RE2 is loved as much as the first game if not even more. Then Resident Evil 4, where he's the main character. This is probably the biggest thing he has going on for him, besides his popularity. RE4 was a breakout title for the series and a defining game for the industry, specifically for 3rd person action/shooter games. Series such as Dead Space were clearly inspired by RE4, for example. The game originally was a Gamecube exclusive as well (like the remake for the original RE1), until Capcom decided to publish it in other platforms because the average sales of the Gamecube. Then Leon also appeared in RE6 where he is one of the playable characters.

I personally feel it depends in how they approach it. If Sakurai and Nintendo just wanted a RE representative, and were very open to Capcom and their suggestions for who should they pick, I feel Capcom would push for Chris if his frequent appearances in the latest games is anything to go by. If Sakurai tries to go with a more crowd pleaser option, I think he would pick either Jill or Leon, because both are probably the most popular protagonist for non-RE fans, and that's probably thanks to their iconic designs (Chris has IMO a less "inspired" look) and playable roles in some of the most beloved and acclaimed games in the franchise.

I'd personally prefer Leon, who would definitely come with a his police uniform from RE2 and his iconic RE4 jacket outfit at the very least. But I'd be as happy with Jill or Chris as well.

Fair enough, this has been my reasoning as well.

Unless we factor in the possibility of Capcom making a last minute decision and deciding to just go through, with the spirit event being a side effect of mishandled negotations. Also the fact this pass has one more slot than the first and this is the last character which could mean that it was, again, a last minute decision.
That is actually sounds like a possibility. Of course, we're just speculating and maybe we're saying dumb ****, but I feel that your point here makes some sense, and I guess stranger things could happen.
Maybe it was Capcom, or maybe Nintendo or Sakurai not being that sure about him being able to pull off a moveset for a Resident Evil fighter, then he changing his mind at the last second, which could kinda explain the spirits. At that point maybe they were like "well, let's add these spirits anyways", which were a B plan for Resident Evil if a fighter wasn't approved.

RE fans, is it possible that potential doubts about a playable RE would've popped up because the hypothetical rep could end up being too similar to someone like Snake?

Huh, haven't thought about that. Do all of Snake's Smash Bros. weapons also appear in Resident Evil? Does the Cypher count?

Nope. The RE characters would likely require more conventional fire arms, making use of the various weapons they find throughout the game. They might also use an 'item menu' with limited resources to simulate the games. They'd have their knife, of course and would employ probably basic martial combat techniques and such.

Snake deals more with EXPLOSIONS and setting traps more than being a traditional zoner.

It was probably Harada's Idea because he knows that it would throw the scent off the Speculation of a Tekken character. At the least, he had some role in it, even if it was Sakurai that greenlit the idea

Hmm… might be on to something here 🤔
Good thing Min Min's here, otherwise I don't know how they'd manage those reaches. Seriously, the first two and the last are at least partially subjective (even if I agree with the latter), not identifiable patterns. Doesn't help that they're conflating a standalone fighter with the first part of a pass.

Disappointment with a sword, huh? I'm gonna place my bets on Beck from Mighty Number 9, since he does use a sword after defeating one of the robot masters:
Uh excuse you. Mighty Numbers. You gonna get the studio DMCA'd. :p

Real talk though I'd be perfectly fine with it so long as Pyrogen's theme was added. Confused, but OK. Also, it would be nice to see Beck's gimmick competently implemented.

I actually thought of Sol Badguy. Wouldn't be a disappointment to me, but I think two fighting game characters back to back, especially one with a sword might cause some rage. : o

Is Harada known for trying to throw people off?

I wish I had a some vague theory of who comes next for Smash Bros.

I mean the most accurate argument against my last theory was "I wasn't being quite conspiratorial enough" and that is the road to madness.

Maybe someone you'd least expect? Maybe another trend breaker?

My favorite part about "patterns" like these is how made-up versatile they are.

Maybe CP11 isn't a disappointing sword character, but...
An axe wielder.
A teacher.
An Intelligent Systems character.
A character whose name starts with B.
A silent protagonist.
A character with a transforming weapon.
A "distance demon."
A strategy character.

You forgot an avatar type character

which Octoling fits both that, “distance demon” if they have a Splatling and/or Charger, and “silent protagonist”

AND disappointing to most. Only thing is they don’t have a sword. Is the Octobrush close enough?
