Hey there Icy -

Actually, Cedar Rapids/Marion would be a lot closer to Iowa City, wouldn't it? Here is a link to a Smashfest going down in Marion in mid-August: Searching for Interest: Cedar Rapids IA Smashfest

Train up, as several top Iowans will most likely be there, including EB, kintehr obviously, and myself (if I'm not too tired from coming back to Des Moines).

People these days.

icy_icicle, we should smash sometime. We're only an hour apart. I can advertise another Shamfest sooner than August too, no probs.

Don't make me jealous, guys. I can't watch every World Cup game. :p

And they STILL DIDN'T GO!!! Come on guys, Marion wasn't THAT far away. No johns!

I have an extension in Firefox to watch the World Cup.

Stupid United States, we got owned 3 to 0? Come on, U.S.! Panama's not in this one, everyone here is cheering for Brazil, looks like they might take it (yet again).

I'm going to try and go to a large gathering of Smashers this Monday. 6 to 8 people, that would be large for us. Hope I do well.

EDIT: David, what are you doing at 5:00 in the morning?!?! At least I have an excuse to be up at 8:00, I'm at work. :p

mewtwo is hard to play with. i mean you have to change your whole outlook on approach. and what is a double jump cancel?

FootieFox for the win!

You should be aware that the United States was and still is favored (not by much, but still) over Japan. And when you're 2,000 miles from home, you cheer for your home country. I obviously will still cheer for the U.S.

I wasn't judging you, I was simply asking. Fool.

Tim is ranked #4 in Des Moines and doesn't know what a double jump cancel is. Dear lord. Read the stickied thread in Melee Discussion.

Um, WHAT approach? The problem with Mewtwo is, he has NO approach. Sheik has tilts/dashes, Fox has the shine, Marth has F-Airs, Peach has turnips, Falco has SHB (among the best approaches in the game)...but what does Mewtwo have? Nothing, he has to wait for the opponent to attack him. Shield-grabbing is pretty much his "approach."

And you're going to have to master wavedashing if you want to be any good with Mewtwo.

Yeah, sometime before August would be awesome, because I have school August 23...which sucks. The problem is, I don't think I can go to some random person's house to play SSBM, my parents would go crazy at the idea. Is there some place where we could play?

And now I'm worried, because I don't think I'm that good...I know all the advanced tactics, and my characters are...IC and Peach. :p I want to get better, and to do that, I need to play people better than me, which I haven't found anywhere near me so far...Everyone else I play sucks more than I do, so....

well icy, if you live in des moines, maybe i could help. I am pretty decent, even though i dont know the advanced stuff. i can even beat victor on occasion. which to me is an accomplishment everytime i do. who knows. maybe you could clue me in on the advanced stuff.

and victor, thats why i want to play with him, because he is a "special" character, and i think he would be awesome to play with, if i could just get down some simple guidelines, im sure i could play well with him. not good as my fox mind you, but decent at best.

Hm...There's not much as far as proxy locations go here. icy_icicle: I can either introduce myself to your parents and have my parents talk with yours, or that one gamespot at the downtown mall thing down there at IC would be a nice spot to meet up(does it still exist?). I haven't been down there in a looong time, but I can get a drive yonder.

Got the extension for Firefox too. ya-ha!

Ice Climbers eat lots of characters alive if you are good with them. I assume you know all the good de-synch and grab combos...again, some more things only I bother to learn out of everyone in the city. Come on, you guys don't have THAT much more of a social life...

Don't play Peach against me (when you do, all Iowans must play each other), Fox eats Peach alive. She's the reason I know how to tech ledges at all and why I bothered to learn infinite shine combos. :)

If you READ the posts, you'd know he isn't in Des Moines.

It is true, Tim has beaten me. (I didn't know Captain Falcon has trouble grabbing Pichu.) But both times that Tim has won, I stopped sandbagging, turned around, and won 5 more times. :p

He's a good player, just needs to TRAIN more with advanced techniques.

If you need a Des Moines challenge, I highly recommend David, an example of the known rule "natural talent > acquired skillls" and the only reason I win is the insane amount of time I put into my technical...I've improved since I left, you best be training...

There's your flame war.

Tomorrow I'm going to a game hobby-type store to Smash it up with 6 to 8 nub cakes, erm I mean, aspiring Panamanian players.

Go UNITED STATES!!! Please just get one goal, don't get 4-stocked!

Um...kintehr, that sounds cool, but shouldn't we get more people? Do you guys have an AIM? I'm icykirbyking (stupid, I know), so contact me there...I really want to play, and wherever I go, my friends (4) and my brother will follow, so that's six people I can provide for some sort of a tournament...

Well, I thought they did pretty well anyways. Give USA break.

No probs on keeping the thread alive but it looks a bit astray from Des Moines. I'm desperate to play someone other than zyroqwa.

One last note, I hate AIM because I can't use it. My screen is kintehr, so, um, icy_icicle, make it go, pleez!

So, I found a possible spot, in Iowa City. It's called UAY, and is a Youth Center, where kids go to do stuff. According to my sister, who spends her life there, we can sign up on a calendar and host a SSB:M tournament. I'm not sure about the details just yet, and I'm sorry if this doesn't fit the topic of "Des Moines", but I think we might actually be able to get something going, as UAY is not anyone's home, and I don't think my parents would object at all, since my sister goes there all the time. BTW, the only reason I care so much about what my parents say is because I'm only 15, and they have complete control of my life still :p College, here I come. :D I'll post more details as they come.

it kind of to late to stop the thread from going off topic, the only des moines area people who seem to post are me, tim, and victor and victors gone, Im not motivated to start smashfest, and tim didnt know what a double jump cancel was

i dont mean to bash the us but the way the espn guys acted like they where the best team it was funny to watch the smack down being applyed to them

As for the thread being off-topic, it's fine.

David, you need to get off your high horse. You:
- Didn't even have an account and only registered so I'd stop complaining at you.
- Too lazy to organize anything!
- You play Sheik, so it is understandable you don't know or have to know anything about advanced techniques. You yourself didn't know what DJC stood for until I told you, and it took you 2 whole minutes to come up with the characters who can DJC after I explained what it meant and how it works. Hating on Tim, pretty impressive. Sheesh.

Stop hating on the United States. Who cares if it was an own goal, it's Italy's own fault for scoring for us. You U.S.A. haters need to travel 2,000 miles to a third-world country, where people cheer for the U.S. no matter what. And the people here do that because it's the same continent. YOU GUYS are LIVING in the U.S. and still hate. So hush.

EB, a huge Smashfest will be organized, by me in my own honor when I return to Des Moines. I wish I was back home...

The people that suck are the people who say they can do better from the tv screen, huh? I appreciate the effort that the USA team is putting forth now, and that there are people to support them, that's what matters. That's what matters about any game. People don't go just to scream boo at their own team. They aren't that bad. No need to reiterate opinions anymore, okay?

I don't know the names of half the things I try/succeed in doing with Marth and I can't cite all the characters without missing one. They're easy to forget. Who cares?

No flammies, and no more downcasting.

I did not mean to make that a personal attack, Maze. I apologize if it was, I'm hurt now too. Flaming is bad, I looked at everything flamish in previous posts, and presented my argument in such a way to level it.

I apologize to anyone who takes my previous post as personal.

First of all, David and I are very good friends, I would easily consider him my best friend. So we aren't actually being very serious or "flaming." In Smash we do the same thing, argue over tiny things, but it would never happen at a tournament. Speaking of which, I want a huge Iowa tournament to happen before I have to start school again.

When I come back to the states, David and I shall have a very good laugh over this in person. :p

Second of all, I'm way too happy now to argue over the World Cup. This entire counry takes the World Cup VERY seriously (today at lunch, there were at least 5 T.V.'s around, and a team made a goal which made everyone in the food joint scream and yell and stand up...I couldn't even tell who made the goal). Such seriousness is seeming to rub off on me.

Anyway, I'm happy because I've gotten this terrible computer at home on the Internet, which took me a whole ****ing week of re-installing Windows, every program they had, all the files that was on the old machine...but now I don't have to surf SmashBoards at work. Hurray!

EDIT: David, check your e-mail.

yea. i dont know what a double jump cancel is. why dont you tell me? I dont exactly have much time to read the threads. when my computer is WORKING (F***ing PC) I am usually working on 3d modeling, scripting, playing other games, writing (typing really) storylines, looking for balisong techniques, entertaining other people, car to antain and jobs. These really take up my time. i only read this thread when someone responds, or i want to reply. so please, maze, take it easy. also, instead of flaming, why not be positive about it. TELL me what it is.

There you go again, not reading the thread. I JUST GOT DONE saying we aren't actually flaming!

Copied directly out of the thread I mentioned:

Double Jump Cancel (DJC): Basically this can only be done by Ness, Mewtwo, Yoshi, or Peach (kinda). During the second jump you can cancel it with any attack. While you can attack during your jump with all characters, only these two can manipulate the second jump (I.E. You will STOP gaining height). Most characters have to attack on a set path based on the jump (unable to adjust the height), Ness, Mewtwo, and Yoshi can interrupt the jump in order to attack (and DI accordingly).

no worries. i dont pay insults any attention. I just wondered what it was. i saw it in the mewtwo thread, and they didnt bother to explain anything. I really dont know most of the terms or tricks. then you guys that make it seem amazing that i dont know what a DJC is, and with my comp on the fritz, i was just stressed. also my trial version of 3d studio max just gave out. Ima gunna have to fix it. one mewtwo trick on battlefield, victor, has pissed a lot of people off. THX :chuckle:
Either way, i am still trying with mewtwo. i have gotten better. sadly enough, i still have a hard time 4 stocking my cousin and my brother jeremy. but i guess that is expected.

also, before i go...cancer cures smoking and gravity is a myth. the earth just sucks.

4-stocking someone means that you won without losing a life. Hell, I have trouble 4-stocking anyone except real bad newbs, usually I lose at least ONE life...

Did I teach you that Mewtwo glitch? I can't remember. If so, no problem.

Gravity is a myth?

So in the last couple days I've played a bunch of scrubs and only a couple okay players. I was playing one guy's Peach on Peach's Castle. Started doing Fox's wall infinite shine combo (which I can do a lot better now, somehow) from 0% to roughly 160% and finished with an up-smash. But while I was doing it, the guy told me it was "cheap" and that is shouldn't be allowed. Also, he said items are "more fun" and should be played all the time.

I was really amazed at people freaking out when I did anything:

"omfg falco cant move while shooting his lazor u haxorz!"
"whoa samus can slide across the whole thing?!"
"wuts a waveshine infinite combo wtf HAX"

Translation: SHB, super wavedash, and waveshining someone against a wall. Pretty standard stuff to us, but to normal people...

In conclusion: SH(FF)LC'd D-Air -> Waveshine -> Repeat (this takes an insane amount of technical skill not to mess up) is cheap, items take skill, and I have the omfg wavedash hax.
