I just realized that I might get to play Ghirahim in 3D. That alone makes me support this character.

I'm kind of scared that Impa gets in instead of Ghirahim though, simply on the basis that females have been given an easy pass into Smash this time. (Which is good...just not for Ghirahim)

Except they aren't. There is a lot of female newcomers because they were the next in line to be playable or simply because it wouldn't make sense to include only the male versions of Villager, Robin, Wii Fit Trainer and Mii Fighter. Palutena, Lucina and Rosalina are simply popular characters, they didn't get in because "lol female".

You're completely right, I retract my statement.

I never meant to imply that characters were getting in just for being female though, just came across that way because I threw the post together in two seconds, but while I do feel that they probably wanted to add more females for roster diversity, I also believe that all of the inclusions are almost entirely based on their merits as a playable character and what unique/interesting movesets they can bring as well as their importance to the series. Else we'd be seeing female clones just for the sake of "lol female"

Basically, chalk my argument down to spending a little too much time on GameFAQ's and Ghirahim bias.

I think it would be absolutely stupid to add Impa with Sheik wasting a spot, if they wanted Impa, they should of at least replaced Sheik, otherwise that's going to be stupid.

Besides villains are more important than female characters, in fact due to the fact evil always beats good, villains are more important than heros, I ripped up the Hylian Bible years ago, I don't care about Link, Toon Link, Sheik or even Zelda unless she's possessed by Ganon, all I care about is Ganondorf and Ghirahim and I'm seeing a pattern to the Zelda roster, two Links, two Zeldas, two villains.

With that said I'm expecting to see a trailer showing both Ghirahim and Ganondorf revealed soon.

Unlike Hyrule Warriors, Super Smash Bros has no room for supporting characters, besides Zelda is all we need for the series because she's Zelda and Sheik is a different variety of Zelda in which makes Impa rather irrelevant looking.

Ghirahim is again a antagonist, which is more important, and we should disregard all gaes besides SS when comparing Ghirahim and Impa because of the two from SS, Ghirahim is the more important one due to being a primary antagonist in the game, and just because Demise is the true final boss, well you're looking at Ghirahim's final smash in regards to Demise.

Whats Impa going to do for final smash, help you get out of the castle, teach you Zelda's Lullaby, all Impa has going for her is swinging a huge sword around, at least Ghirahim would have a better more unique moveset seeing that its not only his sword, but other stuff as demonstrated with the boss fights with Ghirahim.

Impa should be a trophy if anything.

It is not about observable move-set potential or prominence in a relevant tile, it is all about the number of appearances the character has made.

However, I would argue that there is apt precedent establishing that Smash has enough room for supporting characters and that they are usually added before antagonists.

Impa wasn't popular enough until Hyrule Warriors. I could see her have being planned to be a Sheik alt, makes as much sense as Lucina, and once she was confirmed for HW and all of this excitement over her started up, Sakurai might have thought "hey, Sheik is really popular competitively too, maybe I should give her the same treatment I gave Marth"
And then we have Impa as a Sheik clone getting the Lucina treatment.
And this has no affect on Ghirahim, as Sakurai has already said he doesn't care about "amount of reps per series" (I believe)
So either he was already added before her, or he's not in.
And of course the Sheik clone thing isn't 100% either, I see them both as major DLC candidates assuming there are ones.[/collapse]

Impa has more weapons than Ghirahim as we've seen and elemental magic. Impa is a supporting character in at least 4 Zelda games and a MAIN character in another. If Impa makes it in, I can see her being a clone that was originally meant to be a costume, similar to Lucina but she does have a lot going for her.

Ghirahim is an amazing character and one who I would support but if Zant wasn't playable, why does Ghirahim have a chance? They are literally one of the same. Villains who work for a greater evil. Only thing Ghirahim has over Zant is constant antagonizing.

Also, a slot that belongs to Ghirahim? With characters like Tetra, Vaati, and Midna? Why would we need more than two antagonist per series anyways? Before you say that Tetra would just be Toon Sheik, she could get the Palutena treatment where Tetra gets everything that Toon Link did not get like the grappling hook, Deku Leaf, and maybe bombs even though TL has them. Mostly because it makes sense for a pirate to throw bombs.

I just realized that I might get to play Ghirahim in 3D. That alone makes me support this character.

I'm kind of scared that Impa gets in instead of Ghirahim though, simply on the basis that females have been given an easy pass into Smash this time. (Which is good...just not for Ghirahim)

Impa would just make a better representitive for Zelda all over I feel. However, having both would be great to. Still, I'd pick Impa over Ghirahim any day of the week.

I also laugh at the bias here. Impa can't have a Final Smash now? But she's slewing hordes of enemies in Hyrule Warriors? Hmmm.. Something ain't right there! What about using time portals as in Skyward Sword? Or that move with the Sheikah Eye and the falling blades what she uses in the Impa & a Naginata trailer?

Ghirahim supporters, don't be so biased against Impa. Hyrule Warriors shows she's nothing like Sheik at all in terms of fighting style. Sheik herself even is in Hyrule Warriors to proof so, using a lot of inspiration from Smash Sheik. Ghirahim shows more similarities to other sword characters to me than Impa does with Sheik.

I don't think Hyrule Warriors is too new to affect SSB4. Development of HW began in the summer of 2012, and as everyone here knows, SSB4 officially began development in the spring of 2012. I'm sure the dev teams of both games have had at least some interaction with each other, considering that both games have been in development at the same time, with near the same release dates (which they certainly would have had to coordinate), with several of the same characters. I'm betting that Ganondorf and Ghirahim in SSB4 will have taken some elements from HW, especially considering the fact that, even thought the roster may have been decided in late spring 2012, character development would have to have taken much longer. And as we now know with Bowser's demo glitch, they've been making changes to characters even relatively recently.

I don't think the roster selection was influenced, but if the SSB4 dev team has been making brand new movesets for Ganondorf and Ghirahim, which are only actually playable in a Zelda game in Hyrule Warriors, it would be shocking that they would share no elements between the two games. I'm hoping that they will be revealed near or on the HW release date, but we'll have to wait and see.

@ Diddy Kong and everyone else, can we make an agreement that we of the Horde get to say I told you so about Impa if she's not playable, if Diddy Kong gets to say I told you so about Ghirahim if he's not playable? DK's been an ardent, ever-present Impa supporter for dozens of pages in a Ghirahim support thread, so I think it's only reasonable that this happen. It would be cathartic all around.
