  • I'm kinda sad because this was the E3 where Crash would be perfect...but I'm not gonna hold it against Kazuya he'd probably kill me anyways.. I'm not giving up hope til the end; we only have one slot left.
  • MARIO PARTY'S BACK WHERE IT BELONGS HELL YEAH
  • I can't believe Nintendo actually went with "Metroid Dread". I like it when they revisit previous concepts.
  • Get It Together sounds like hilarious fun
  • I CAN'T BELIEVE NINTENDO ACTUALLY WENT BACK TO ADVANCE WARS
    • I'M NOT EVEN A FAN AND I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW HAPPY I AM
  • Nice that we at least have a release window for BOTW2!
  • The lack of Donkey Kong, FE, Splatoon 3 and Kirby is a bit confusing, but I can look forward to it in the next Direct, at least
Overall: 9/10, definitely better than everyone else this year

I was hyped at Kazuya's reveal. I also have interest in BotW2, those 2 new Metroid games, and that Mario Party game.

I place 20 noms on Imperial.

Speaking of Frisk, they (or Papyrus, or Undyne, or whoever) just became a lot more...not necessarily likely, but more reasonable.
There was a problem fetching the tweet

Still pushing for Quote as my #1, though I think I might shift the focus of my promotion to an Undertale rep just down to them being more likely. Neku Sakuraba, my #2, probably doesn't have much of a chance after E3; if he were to be used as promotion for NEO: TWEWY like Hero, September or whenever would probably be a bit too late to ride the hype like that.

Speaking of NEO: TWEWY...I'm disappointed all it got was a cameo in SE's sizzle reel. They're clearly trying to push it as a bigger franchise, but they won't even replay stuff from old trailers as the biggest platform they have?

Kazuya is, as I said on the E3 discussion thread, yet another character I find disappointing personally even though I recognize him as an objectively good choice. I've never played Tekken beyond Tag Tournament on PS2 when I was younger, and it made no sense to me. (Despite that, my habit of reading about games I've never played on TV Tropes and other wikis paid off as I was able to figure out who it was when I realized Ganondorf was being thrown into a volcano).

Metroid Dread stood out to me the most out of everything this E3, mostly for the fact that it's Metroid Dread. Might give it a shot; I've been meaning to get into Metroid for a while.

Holy crap, was that E3 for Nintendo amazing. I've minimal Tekken knowledge, but Kazuya being in Smash was really cool for me. How he's gonna work is beyond me (Probably Tekken Advance controls), but I'm sure he'll be fun no less. Advance Wars, though that ****'s hype as hell. Played a lot of it when I was a kid.

Okay, reactions:
  • Kazuya is a cool choice and I approve of it (not that my approval should matter that much in the grand scheme of things)
  • Mario Party will probably be good. I will buy it to play it with friends, though I wouldn't say I'm "excited" for it. I just know I will be buying it haha...
  • Metroid Dread looks tight. Super exciting release there!
  • Mario Golf getting post-launch content is not a surprise, but it's good to have it confirmed and the New Donk City stage seems cool.
  • Love the look/feel of SMTV. I'm super excited, though the UI is largely directly taken from Tokyo Mirage Sessions and I find that very funny in an almost distracting way. It's like if the next Doom game decided to reuse the UI of Captain Toad Treasure Tracker...
  • Danganronpa getting ports is all well and good, but them casually being like "BTW, THE DANGANRONPA FRANCHISE-WIDE CROSSOVER BOARD-GAME/JRPG FUSION WE MADE FOR V3'S POST-GAME IS BECOMING A FULL-SIZED GAME" is... almost mind-blowing to me. That's a great announcement.
  • Zelda got a motorcycle. Vroom vroom. I approve.
  • BotW2 looks amazing! Super cool gimmick. I'm a little bit underwhelmed about Zelda seemingly going back to a damsel in distress, but the gameplay itself looks fantastic.

I'm waiting on the Kirby project, but I'm happy to wait to see that next Direct... or on a random morning at 6AM if they go that route with that game lol.

- Kazuya is a great pick, and another villain! I won't play him since FG mechanics feel jank for me in Smash, but he's really cool..

- Super excited for Advance Wars, Metroid, and Wario. I kinda didn't really like the SMT trailer, but I think a large part of that is the english voice acting turning me off. (Still don't think we'll get Ashley or Andy in Smash)

- Things look much better for Capcom again, seeing as we got Heihachi. Can I go back to hoping for Phoenix even though he has the same haircut as Kazuya?

Kazuya's funny, because he just screwed over Mii Costume deconfirms beyond the characters themselves. Everyone thought Tekken was dead, because why wouldn't all the Tekken content come at the same time? But nope, Kazuya. This opens up the doors for:
  1. Undertale
  2. Rayman
  3. Ezio
  4. Octoling
  5. Dovahkiin
  6. Phoenix Wright
  7. Dante
And quite a bit more, now that Miis won't take out a company or a series. Even if we've only got a single reveal today, at least we have a fair bit more options to talk about.

It also does seem to imply that the actual characters that have costumes are dead though seeing as now we got Pyra / Kazuya over Rex / Heihachi. So it looks even worse for Geno, Lloyd, and Monster Hunters now than it did before (if that's possible).

Assuming Lloyd comes back, that is. Which is admittedly still pretty likely, but after everything that's happened I'm half-expecting Lloyd to just not show up with Kazuya just to frick with people.

That was a pretty cool Direct. I personally would have rather had Velvet or Nightmare for a Namco character but Kazuya is cool too. Does anybody know what was up with the Heihachi in the trailer? It almost looked like he was an alt outfit.

I think he was supposed to be a stage cameo. Thankfully, he looks to be around the level of Terry's cameos rather than Byleth and Pyra's.

Y'know, I've been thinking about something.

Metroid Dread has been slated to be the end of the story of the Metroids themselves. Assuming this isn't the end of Metroid as a series, I feel like we'd need some new evolving alien threat to fill the void. Given the teases regarding the Chozo, I could see some wanting to create their own metaphorical Metroids - That is, the deadliest species in the galaxy.

How would you go about creating a replacement for the Metroids?

Maybe a continuation of Other M's story about the Galactic federation's conspiracies?

Hmmm, Metroid loves to tackle sci-fi themes (Metroids = Xenomorphs, Parasite X = Carpenter's The Thing, Space Pirates = uhhhhhh Space Pirates, Kriken Empire = the archetypical Insectoid aliens seen in a number of sci-fi fiction, E.M.M.I. = Terminators) so how about clone soldiers in the style of Star Wars? Emotionless, ruthless and brutally efficient, their gimmick would be adapting to Samus's increasingly powerful arsenal.

They don't have to look or be human, but they definitely need to look humanoid for the frighteningly-coordinated clone soldier concept to be clear.

That sounds like an interesting idea. An idea I had was something like the Yautja (Predator): a race of tribal, super-strong hunters who hunt other species for sport. Samus could be stranded on their planet, with countless of these alien hunters on her tail, all the while she tries to survive.

I noticed my 15 votes for Lu Bu last round never got counted. I also got a lot more nominations than I expected so I’m assuming it all worked out in the end and my points just carried over.

Nah, I don't handle nom carryover. You just had a lot to say about Battletoads.
Oh that’s cool. My first Lu Bu nomination was on post 1,810 on the last page. Maybe I voted too late? I’m also not entirely sure if he’s eligible considering he’s based on a real historical figure but he does have a support thread and Dynasty Warriors is a pretty big game franchise.

Nah, I'd count him as a video game character for sure. I just messed up the counting haha...

Emotionless?? Someone hasn’t watched the Clone Wars series

They have a ton of emotions, you know… until they get activated….you might have a point actually.

maybe the Feds try to make a clone army of Samus-es, that would be messed up

Okay, so I didn't mess up counting; I just hadn't counted them yet. There's no such thing as "too late" for voting; if you post after I post the noms list; I'll just count them the following day. So, in this case, Lu Bu gets to go from 0 to 65 noms in one day lol.

I wasn't trying to say that the Star Wars clone troopers are emotionless, just trying to say that the clone soldiers concept I was proposing would be the ones who'd be made emotionless.

Okay, with the discussion moving onto Crash, here's my idea of his stage: Bermugula's Orbit. It's the stage where, in Crash 4, you fight both versions of N. Tropy. The Smash version will take place in the space station at the end, with the N. Tropies as stage bosses (where if you defeat one of them, the other will retreat).

What would be the best way to give Crash moves that stand out from other characters like him? Most fanmovesets are all very samey and while I can see him having more over the top versions of typical moves, is there anything beyond just spinning and sliding he can pull from?

So...Crash. In all honesty, I've never been particularly enthused for him. I get that he's important and iconic, but he just seemed kinda basic with nothing particularly interesting in terms of aesthetics or moveset potential. And it's not that I'm unfamiliar with him; thanks to TV Tropes and Caddicarus, I'd say I know a decent amount about him.

I know about his basic moves (spin, slide, belly flop). I know about his powerups (Crash Dash, fruit bazooka, stronger basic moves, the masks from 4). I know about his vehicles (plane, motorcycle, mech suit, karts). And none of these seem particularly interesting to me.

The one thing about Crash I think has decent potential to excite me is the soundtrack; I've listened on-and-off to tracks from Warped, Wrath of Cortex, Twinsanity, and It's About Time in the past. And I suppose he'd be kinda funny.

Is there anything about Crash that could convince me to get more excited about him?

I don’t give a flippity-floo about Crash

Seriously though, Crash is fine and it would be kind of cool to get the old PS1 mascot in Smash to fight along side Mario and Sonic.

For my question, what do you guys want to see for his reveal trailer? I would personally love to see a continuation of the old PS1 commercial where he goes to Nintendo’s HQ and calls out Mario. It would be hilarious if Mario and the other Smash characters actually came out and they started fighting. It would basically be a hybrid of the Smash 64 commercial and the Crash commercial.

Okay, how about ideas for alternate costumes? My picks are:

American design
Japanese design
Mother Clucker
Booty Seeker
Living Fossil
Serious Upgrade
Fake Crash
The Classic

Ah, so we talk about what it would be like if Cash Banooca was in Smash Banooca.

Well, in all honesty, Crash was one of the biggest rivals to Nintendo not in Smash as of yet, and his legacy since his release absolutely shows it. I've seen more than a few movesets that use the Spin Attack as Neutral B, which...honestly doesn't sit right with me. I can understand the logic behind it, but it feels a bit too...mundane to be a Special in spite of how closely tied it is to the character. I'd pull it off by giving him a Mega Man/Steve-style Neutral Attack where he can attack while moving and jumping, just to give him that sort of flow that's found in the Crash games.

Alright; since the Banooca wasn't revea;ed at E3, I think I'll do a thing for him. I made this assuming he was in the base game (complete with pretending the design below was Smash-original).
Cash Banooca.png
Crash Bandicoot
Goes N. Sane!

Intro: Crash appears from a Time Twister portal and jumps into his fighting stance

Stance/Idle 1: His default idle animation from It’s About Time
Idle 2: Crash looks to either the left or the right
Idle 3: Crash looks to the screen and raises an eyebrow while smiling

Notable Palette Swaps:
  1. Crash 4: It’s About Time (default)
  2. Carbon Crash (grey)
  3. Coco (blue/pink)
  4. Dr. Neo Cortex (yellow/black)
  5. Aku Aku (brown)
  6. Crunch (red)
  7. Biker outfit (alternate costume)
  8. PS1 Crash (orange)
Walk: His walk from It’s About Time
Run: His iconic run from the N. Sane Trilogy
Dash: The Crash Dash
Damage: Crash spins for a split second, in a manner similar to his death animation from the very first game
Jump: His iconic Jump and Double Jump
Crouch: His crouch from the N. Sane Trilogy

Normal Attacks
Jab: Crash's 1-2-3 combo from the Titans games (5%, small knockback)
Forward+A: Crash turns around and does a backwards kick (7%, OK knockback).
Down+A: Crash does a slap along the ground (4%, small knockback)
Up+A: Crash lunges his legs upwards and spins them twice to look like kicking (8%, small knockback)

Aerial Attacks
Air+A: Bandi-Copter; Crash turns sideways and spins in midair (9%, OK knockback)
Air Forward+A: Crash does a spin kick similar to Coco's spin in Wrath of Cortex (5%, small knockback)
Air Back + A: Crash does a pelvic thrust and kicks behind himself with both legs (8%, small knockback)
Air Up+A: Crash does a quick spin with both arms in the air (9%, OK knockback)
Air Down+A: Crash does a Belly Flop (11% with a meteor effect, OK knockback), possibly burying opponents on the ground

Dash Attack: Crash slides along the ground (7%, small knockback)
Edge Attack: A tiny TNT crate explodes under Crash and he flops up above the edge and back onto the stage (12%, OK knockback)
Get-Up Attack: Crash does a weak spin kick with both legs (7%, small knockback)

Smash Moves
Forward+A: Bandicoot Bounce; Crash springs himself forward (11%, OK knockback) and flips into a kick (8%, OK knockback); this propels Crash very far
Up+A: Crash frantically tries to get rid of a Nitro Crate, holding it up in the air (23%, medium knockback)
Down+A: Spin Slide; Crash does a powerful spin kick along the ground (18%, medium knockback)

Grab Game
Grab: Crash grabs the opponent in the face
Pummel: Crash kisses the opponent (1%)
Forwards+Throw: Crash spins forward and throws the opponent (8%, OK knockback)
Down+Throw: Crash ducks as three boxes fall down on the opponent (3% each, OK knockback)
Back+Throw: Crash spins backwards and throws the opponent (8%, OK knockback)
Up+Throw: Crash lifts up a Crystal, and its shine pushes the opponent back (10%, OK knockback)

Special Moves
B : Spin
; Crash's most iconic move. Pressing B once performs a short, quick spin that reflects projectiles (11%, OK knockback). Mashing B turns into the Death Tornado Spin (19%, medium knockback); not only is it faster, it can help Crash glide a good distance.
B + Forwards : Wumpa Ball / Fruit Bazooka; when pressing B, Crash tosses a Wumpa Fruit that goes a somewhat short distance (6%, small knockback); he can even move backwards while pressing B, and keep throwing when B is still being pressed while standing still. When holding B, Crash takes out a bazooka that fires faster and stronger fruit (10%, OK knockback); he can aim by tilting up or down.
B + Up : TNT / Arrow Crate; Crash jumps off and drops a TNT Crate, which goes off in a small area after 3 seconds (20%, medium knockback). When a TNT Crate is already present, Crash instead jumps off a metal crate with an arrow that appears for a second; the jump height is doubled. In either case, Crash can move freely after using this special.
B + Down : Aku Aku; Crash Body Slams into an Aku Aku Crate, summoning Aku Aku (who can only appear once at a time); if Aku Aku is already present, Crash simply Belly Flops (5%, small knockback). Aku Aku reduces the damage Crash takes by ½ and prevents knockback, but disappears once Crash takes one hit.

Final Smash: Missed Boxes; Crash dons a golden Aku Aku mask and Crash Dashes into two opponents (8%). The opponent is then taken into a cutscene where hundreds of TNT and Nitro Crates piled on top of each other explode, and Crash runs away (52%, devastating knockback)

Gimmicks: N/A

However, Crash does have his famous death animations:
  • Whenever he falls down offscreen, his shoes fly up and fall back down
  • Whenever Crash loses a Stamina Battle for good, he appears as an angel (he also plays a didgeridoo when he dies from a Final Smash)
Taunts:
1: Crash does the first part of his victory dance
2: Crash does the second part of his victory dance
1+2: Crash performs the final part of his victory dance

Winposes:
1: "Yeee-HAW!" Crash squats for a second, and then performs his victory animation against bosses in the very first game
2: Crash’s victory animation from It's About Time
3: Crash's post-gem collecting animation from the first game

Applause: Endless boxes fall on top of Crash
Icon: A Wumpa Fruit
Boxing Ring Title: N. Sane Marsupial
Star K.O.: https://youtu.be/kADARuk5sg4?t=15
Victory Music: A shortened version of the Time Twister theme
Kirby Hat: A replica Aku Aku mask
Game of Origin: Crash Bandicoot (1996)

Description: Exactly as it says; this beach is pure N. Sanity! There are crates aplenty hidden around.

Layout: The middle on the ground has a somewhat wide hole. There are 8 crates along the top of the hole, each a different one. There are also four crates each on the top left and right.

Gimmicks and Hazards: The different types of crates in each spot:
  • Crate: Just a simple crate, which can be broken by any attack; only the ones on either side of the stage have items
  • Arrow Crate: An indestructible steel crate that bounces fighters back onto the stage
  • Bounce Crate: A crate that can not only bounce fighters up, but take five hits before breaking
  • TNT Crate: A crate that explodes 3 seconds after any contact (15%, OK knockback), destroying any two crates on either side of it
  • Nitro Crate: A deadly crate that explodes IMMEDIATELY upon contact (27%, medium knockback), destroying any two crates on either side of it
In addition, sometimes a boulder will appear out of nowhere and roll towards the center of the stage (35%, far knockback). Fighters above 65% will suffer a Screen KO.
Palutena’s Guidance
:ultpit:: Whoa! Is that...who I think it is?
:ultpalutena:: Crash Bandicoot? Yes, it is! One of Mario and Sonic’s closest rivals back in the lat 90's!
Viridi: I think he deserves it after having to deal with Cortex so many times!
:ultpit:: But..isn’t Crash a creation of Cortex?
Viridi: Well, yes and no; he was just an ordinary bandicoot living his best life with his sister and his girlfriend, but then Cortex just had to come along and try to make them-and other animals-his own servants! He’s not like Mewtwo in the sense of his creation he’s just a poor victim of circumstance/
:ultpalutena:: I mean...at least his signature spin attack is worth it, right?
Viridi: Yeah, I guess...but he only got that as a result of being under Cortex’s foot back in the day.
:ultpit:: Hate to interrupt your lament, Viridi, but uh...how do I deal with Crash as an opponent?
Viridi: Oh, right! Crash’s spin attack can reflect projectiles with the right timing, but he can also go into a Death Tornado Spin to glide. He can also pull out a Fruit Bazooka, jump off TNT Crates, which are plenty avoidable. Sometimes he’ll summon his guardian, Aku Aku, to shield him from a single hit. When he does that, focus on hitting him multiple times!
(fights characters who were popular in the 90's)

I haven't played a Crash game in my life, but just from looking at it... I think one of the defining elements of the spin (which is in turn one of the defining elements of Crash) is that it doesn't really... affect your movement. It's like Mega Man's buster in that you just do it while moving. I think if you have to hold still while doing the spin, even if you can start moving afterwards, it loses that property.

Yeah, maybe the spin could be a dash attack that doesn’t stop your momentum. I had the same idea for Tidus’ dash attack years ago to reference his Slice and Dice overdrive.

Huh. Interesting concept. I don't think I've ever really seen anything like that.

I still think it would feel a little off if you couldn't stop or jump during it, though...

Since things are currently slowing down here, here's another question: Mi costumes? I hope one of them is a Crash costume that resembles the one worn by that guy in those old Crash commercials; that'd be so meta.

That would be absolutely hilarious, yeah. As for others, N. Tropy could make a good Mii Swordfighter, and then there's the obvious Cortex Mii Gunner. But I think we could get really out there and have a Dingodile Mii Gunner costume.
