Sakurai is not going to add a character just to advertise some random game that's coming out after Smash.
And the reason they chose him wasn't because he'd advertise an upcoming game, but rather because his fire would set him apart from Marth.

Personally, I'm hoping for Snake and Layton. Well, sort of. I've kind of lost hope for Layton recently, but I've already got a mii prepared for him.
Sonic was treated the same way.
(can't choose, so for now, they're both 1-2) (It depends... if Sonic has a Classic Sonic alt.model, then Sonic is 3, and Samus is 4. I'm with you; I don't think we can count Snake out until all directs before release happen.
is gonna be my main no matter what unless they change him too much for my liking. (Basically, screw it if he's anything like Project M Wario.) The only "second main" (pretty much a secondary anyway *shrugs*) I'll ever use is . Snake and Wario are my two favorite video game characters of all time, so here's hoping Snake returns. Chorus Kids might change my mind though about the whole "second main" thing that makes no sense!
Pretty sure Sakurai said that every newcomer will get their own trailer. Somewhere around last year's E3.
I imagine so, every newcomer thus far has had a trailer dedicated to them. I also think I heard mentioned somewhere(that I cannot clearly recall) that these trailers would be available for viewing in the game itself. I think. Don't hold me to that. u.u;
Snake was certainly unique and a blast to play in Brawl, but there's no real tie between Konami and Nintendo anymore. While it would be nice for them to try and drum up interest in one anothers' series, why would you when you get little payback of your own out of it. MGSV isn't coming to Wii U, at least not in any appreciable amount of time, and I really doubt Konami is staking anything on SSB4's successes. I think he's gone, unfortunately.
Can't say I necessarily agree here, but I figure the best time to reveal him as a returning fighter would have been at E3. That never happened, so I assume he's either not in the game, or they intend to reveal him and sweep him under the rug, so as to avoid taking spotlight from the new third party characters.
Honestly?
To be fair, the fact that they are both A- not nintendo, and B- very popular, is the reason why they are the most hyped characters. I thinks it's perfectly fine because besides those two, we are getting added series reps people wanted(Palutena, Greninja), and several new series reps along with that(villager, wii fit trainer, little mac) Plus, assuming the Gematsu leak is true, that's an added two series and another popular Fire Emblem rep. And, if Mewtwo and/or Ridley is in the game, they will receive a lot of hype.
: I tend to stick to Mario and Fox in the last two Smash games, so I don't see this changing anytime soon. But I'm really hyped to play as Megaman. He might take some time getting used to, since he's a keep away character, but that actually makes me even more excited to fight with him.: I liked using Samus, Sheik, and Luigi a lot, so I'm gonna stick with them. But now I'm interested in using Charizard more, since he's on his own. Rosalina might be hard to use though.: I might not use them as often, but they look cool. So there's that.
See the thing about characters with big learning curves, that usually means they are good competitively. Just look at ice climbers. Though, whether or not that matters to you, I don't know, but all the most of the newcomers in general seem to bring something new to the table that the community will have quite a time figuring out. I'm just excited to play the game, as is everyone else.
