Officially no, unlockable characters like Lucario, Toon Link, Ness, Captain Falcon and Wolf weren't revealed prior to release. They did leak out, but that was not because of Nintendo or Sakurai.

I could have sworn all characters were revealed in the Dojo prior to the games release

In America, yes, thanks to not only the nation delay but Sakurai just putting all of it up there.
In Japan, only the starters and third parties were revealed.

Actually, Lucario, Ness, and Jigglypuff were because of Nintendo/Sakurai.
It was an oversight in one of the videos posted on the Dojo that showed some Stickers, highlighting one that only worked for Ness and Lucas, and another that only worked for the Pokémon (which also leaked that Mewtwo wasn't showing up).
The video was uploaded again with the character icons removed.

Here are my unlockable list tasks, if anyone is interested...

: Clear Classic Mode with any character.
: Clear Classic Mode with 10 different characters.
: Play Group Mode for 5 hours.
: Clear Target Smash with all the starting characters.
: Clear Classic Mode on the Normal skill level or higher with any Pokemon franchise character.
: Play Group Mode for 10 hours.
: Achieve a grand total of 1000 KOs in Group Mode.
: Clear Classic Mode with "every" Mario Universe character (except Rosalina). This includes the Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and Wario franchises.

Anyone who's not on the list are the starting characters.

2 lost so far (Ivysaur and Squirtle).
6 newcomers so far, that's already 43, assuming no one else has been cut. Only two newcomers left confirmed.
Do people seriously think 50-55 is a big number? It would be seriously underwhelming to get anything less than ten newcomers.
Sakurai has a larger team that knows what they're doing, doesn't have SSE eating up development, etc. There are no excuses.

There's no way it will be anything less than 48-50. Namco isn't incompetent you know. 44 or less? That's five more than Brawl, and we already have six newcomers.

I really think you're underestimating Namco, who made a fighting game with over 50 characters, an they were all more detailed than Smash characters. I think we could easily have 60, but that's a bit much. So 50-55 is an understandable number.

I'm curious; if Fire Emblem Awakening's version of the Falchion was shown to be an item, would you argue that Chrom still has a chance?

Chrom with dual Falchions would be sick.

I really hope you don't mean that, at least give the game a chance, so many characters seem to be getting overhauls, I think the new gameplay we will find with them could really make up for a smaller roster size.

It would be rather weird for Smash 4 to have less playable characters than Brawl, especially if Sakurai is trying to keep cuts at a very small level.

Sakurai has gone on record saying that he hates cuts, and knows how painful it is for the players whose mains get cut.

With Squirtle, Ivysaur and possibly Snake being cut, adding in the newcomers gets us to 42 characters.

If we have a total of 10 newcomers, we'll have a roster of 46 characters. I'd say we're VERY likely to go over 45 characters.

So I missed a discussion about unlockable character methods? Here's my predictions

- Clear the Classic mode without using a continue
- Play 15 Vs Mode matches on the Boxing Ring stage
- Beat the Classic mode with 10 different characters
- Get 30 Max Combos in Training mode
- Clear the Classic mode on the 2nd easiest difficulty in under 15 minutes without using a continue
- Something related to Event Matches
- Use all other Mario-related characters in Vs mode or Classic mode
- beat the Target Test with 12 different characters

i guess hes seen as like Warios partner since he was made for that point exactly wario need a partner in Mario tennis but ur also right he never apprend in wario ware.

Ahh, it's just a coincidence that you have the same name as the guy I am talking about.
Onto the Waluigi topic, he is seen as Wario's partner so it seems that it made sense for Sakurai to have the logo for Waluigi.

Nope. Also,D3,Zamus,and Sheik were bonus (alternate in my terms) ideas that COULD be used.
Also,I'm a person who thinks : "If I'm making a game with unlockables,I don't want to give too much with default characters."

I'll make an updated decision later on.

EDIT : After looking at other lists,some require target tests. We don't know if Target Test WILL return,even though it's a high chance.

When there were people who wanted Waluigi to be playable, they suggested he could get in as a Wario character.

Others said no, makes no sense, he's a Mario character, hasn't been in any Wario games.

Waluigi returns as an assist with the Wario symbol and suddenly "Oh yeah that makes sense, he's Wario's partner after all!"

Gotta be careful not to get a bad case of whiplash, I don't see how it matters since Waluigi didn't make the cut anyway. Next time, waaaaa~

: play 500 matches, or unlocked automatically if Wii Fit U data is found on the Wii U
: Win three 1 vs 1 matches in "for glory" mode, play 200 matches
: Clear all target smash levels with Pikachu or Charizard, play 75 matches
: Win a match in 'for fun" mode, play 150 matches
: Clear classic mode without using a continue, play 25 matches
: Perform 30 final smashes, play 125 matches
: KO Mario 20 times, play 300 matches
: Defeat master hand on intense without taking damage, play 350 matches
: Unlock in an event match
: Play on the skyloft stage 10 times, play 50 matches

I don't care about the unlock conditions, I want there to be some way to just unlock everyone in one easy swoop like the SSE. I'm probably one of the only people who doesn't care about them being unlock-able or not, I'd rather just have the whole roster from the start. It's annoying to want to play as x and not have them yet.

well me have Link , toon link and marth atm. For returning we still have meta knight and maybe Ike. If were to belive sal leak i belive it adds Shulk and Chorm who are both sword users. So this gives us 6 or 7.

I was rooting for Ashley and how she is unique and Sakurai is choosing unique characters. But she was an AT.

I for one thought the shadow deconfirmed Ridley

but at this point i want him to be a newcomer just so people that are saying Ridley fans are in denial get an egg to the face.
